"hide presents Our Pink Spider 2012" First Overseas Performance Announced!

In 2011 the first "hide presents Our Pink Spider 2012" had been held in Japan - a new live event during which artists would perform under the condition that they at least cover one hide song!

Last year, the event had been taken place all over Japan and this year the event will be going overseas for the first time. For this occasion D.I.E., former keyboarder of "hide with Spread Beaver" and MAD have formed a new unit to present and produce the event as "KISS THE WoRLD".

The first overseas event will be held in Singapore and while presenting a number of original songs, cover songs of hide are of course mandatory.
Tickets are already currently on sale.

JRR: Thank you for accepting Jrock Revolution’s interview request.

HEATH: Entirely my pleasure.

JRR: Congratulations also on the X JAPAN reunion.

HEATH: Thank you very much.

JRR: Before we start the interview, please let me explain that a lot of JRR's readers are more recent foreign Jrock fans and not all familiar with the people who've been around from the start. Most of them know X JAPAN as a band, and these fans don’t know so much about the individual members; this interview is to introduce you to everybody who reads our site. So please pardon us if we ask questions that most other fans and everybody in Japan know the answers to.

HEATH: Yes, that's fine.

JRR: Unlike the other X JAPAN members, you're from Kansai (Ed. Note: Western Japan, the region around Osaka) and not Kantou (Ed. Note: Eastern Japan, Greater Tokyo area). Is that right?

HEATH: Yes, I'm from Amagasaki, in Hyougo prefecture.

JRR: You originally started playing in the Kansai area, too?

HEATH: Yes. My first indies band was there, then moved to Tokyo later on.

JRR: That was PARANOIA?

HEATH: Yes.

JRR: You left that in 1988, then you were in Tokyo in 1990. What did you do in between?

HEATH: I played in another band with some friends, but that didn't last for very long—only until 1990. After that, I decided to go to Tokyo and did that in 1990.

JRR: What made you move from Osaka to Tokyo?

HEATH: At that time, Japan's rock scene basically was Kantou, and anyone who was anybody was in the Kansai region—those who were talented and popular and really wanted to make it big went to Tokyo. I wasn't in a band at that time, just on my own as bassist, but I thought that maybe in Tokyo I could find a chance to make it big for myself.

JRR: Also in 1990, you met X after the final concert of their ROSE & BLOOD tour at Nippon Budokan. How did that happen? Did someone introduce you?

HEATH: Yes. A friend of mine happened to be a friend of HIDE’s, as well; my friend said, “Since they have a live, want to go watch?” The live that he took me to was that one.

JRR: What was your first impression of them?

Heath: When I first saw them, it was at that live—what really impressed me was that the whole concert was like a story. It was very dramatic. During those three hours [of the concert], there was one story after another. Naturally there were points that were especially emphasized; however, because it was one long and ongoing story, it was very interesting. I remember that I felt that X would stay in my heart.

JRR: What were your impressions of the individual members?

HEATH: I was invited to the after-live party and met HIDE there, but there was an incredible number of people, so I don't really remember much [about the others].

JRR: How was HIDE at that time?

HEATH: He really was like a big brother then; he told me “Since you made it here, let me introduce you to everybody. Make sure they remember you.” and then he dragged me all over the place and introduced me to dozens of people as “HEATH from Osaka, yoroshiku.”

JRR: Incidentally, where does “HEATH” originally come from?

HEATH: That's from the band I was in before PARANOIA. The members of that band decided that we should get stage nicknames, so everybody did that. My usual nickname was “Hichan” and “HEATH” came from changes to that.

JRR: So it's a take off of your real first name?

HEATH: Yes, that's right. My first name is Hiroshi, and over time that changed [to HEATH].

JRR: Then “HEATH” stuck?

HEATH: It did.

JRR: To get back to the previous topic, did you join EXTASY [RECORDING] by HIDE's introduction then?

HEATH: I was never an official EXTASY artist...

JRR: But you've been in a number of EXTASY bands?

HEATH: That's true. What were those again... well, there was a number. But we never released anything through EXTASY. It was more along the lines of how they helped us with our tours and, in general, were very supportive.

JRR: But you were at the 1991 EXTASY SUMMIT—even if your band didn't perform?

HEATH: Yes, I remember carrying some flag around that. (Laughs.)

JRR: Rumor has it that when HIDE later invited you to play for X, you thought that was a joke.

HEATH: That really started with him asking, “You know what our current situation is, don't you?” When I said, “Yes, I do,” he then asked, “[We] want to record a bit, so could you help us out since we don't have a bass at the moment?” I replied with, “Sure, I can play for you.” Then he gave me a tape and told me to copy it. It had about five songs, if I remember correctly. So I copied that, then I went to the studio and played with [the band]. Almost immediately, after I got home, HIDE called me to say, “Seems that everybody likes you, so think about [joining X].” Something like that.

JRR: You went to New York after that. Was that related to X? Or was that something you did personally?

HEATH: That was for X—the press conference at the Rockefeller Center. It was my first press conference with X, as well.

JRR: If that's the reason why you went to New York, several rumors have the whole story very wrong.

HEATH: What rumors?

JRR: That you were approached about becoming X's bassist while you were in New York.

HEATH: No, that's wrong.

JRR: Thank you for clearing that up. Next is something that I've been curious about from your personal work is “DAYDREAM,” which appeared first on your debut mini album HEATH. It seems to have six different versions by now.

HEATH: Yes, I think it's six already...

JRR: It's numbered "006" on [your last solo album] DESERT RAIN.

HEATH: Ah, yes.
JRR: I can't find version 004 anywhere, though.

HEATH: You can't, no. Four is a bit strange... (Laughs.) When I was producing four—in fact, I was almost done with it—the data disappeared. Somehow, it got lost. The equipment that had the data was stolen. After that, I didn't work on it anymore.

JRR: Maybe again in the future?

HEATH: To do that, I'd have to redo everything. I'd have to record the sample again, then do the manufacturing and everything once more to see how well I could recreate four. If I wanted to release it.

JRR: Back to the released versions, I've only been able to listen to 001, 003 and 006. 002 and 005 are also a bit hard to find. To be honest, those don't sound like the same song to me at all.

HEATH: At the time of the change from 002 to 003, there were a lot of DJs in Japan, and new technology that made producing songs easier had become available in Japan, too. A friend of mine was one of those DJs. I did 003 with him following up on it, and it became a completely different work. Or, rather, I felt that the song had to become something different. The theme of “DAYDREAM” had to remain, which was something that I absolutely wanted to retain.

JRR: If it's so different, why did you keep the same name? That's a bit of a mystery to me.

HEATH: Well, “DAYDREAM”—creating it, singing it—it’s about looking at a light from a dark place. That kind of darkness is different for everybody; it's also different with age—the way a small child or an adult might feel darkness. The light itself that you look at from that place might change, as well. I think that all of those changes appear in “DAYDREAM.” That's what I want to express in that one [ever changing] song.

JRR: That's interesting. In an aside since you mentioned DJs: you're DJing yourself, as well?

HEATH: Yes, I've done that numerous times. For club events and such.

JRR: Unfortunately, you aren't performing much at clubs these days.

HEATH: Unfortunately not, no.

JRR: I saw you in LYNX at the Omotesando FAB (Ed. Note: A Tokyo livehouse) last summer. I think that was the last time you performed? (Ed. Note: Actually, the Omotesando FAB LYNX live gig wasn't the last; there was one more shortly after that, at Harajuku ASTRO HALL, but as I couldn't go to that, I guess that it slipped my mind. Obviously, it slipped HEATH's, as well.)

HEATH: That was the last time. I want to, though. (Laughs.)

JRR: Why don't you?

HEATH: In LYNX, everybody is doing other things, too. ISSAY has three other projects: DER ZIBET, [ISSAY meets] DOLLY and... one more, with a very odd name. I forgot what. But with all that, scheduling is a bit difficult. I'm doing things, too. But if we can manage, we're planning to do something [as LYNX] again. Please come to that, too, when we do.

JRR: Certainly; it would be our pleasure. However, if I can come back to “DAYDREAM” once more—that was a solo song in your BLUE NIGHT, WHITE NIGHT in ‘94, but what version of the song was that?

HEATH: That was the second, I think. Maybe the third. But around either of those two.

JRR: Normally, everybody thinks of you as “HEATH on bass,” but you’re actually also singing, aren't you? In your solo project and when you were vocals for BEET SWEET.

HEATH: It's not as if I hate to sing. In my solo work, where I write all the music and lyrics, I think I can best express what I want to say if I do the singing myself.

JRR: In DESERT RAIN, you also play all the instruments, correct? Bass, guitar, keyboard...

HEATH: Yes, everything but drums. For those, I used a recording.

JRR: How long did that take to produce?

HEATH: It was very quick. About a month and a half.

JRR: Are you planning to do another DESERT RAIN gig or different solo work?

HEATH: Well, I did DESERT RAIN—with that title—once before. I'd have liked to do it some more times in at least Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, but there wasn't time for that.

JRR: Do it from now on?

HEATH: I'd really like to. Not only in Japan.

JRR: If you would go overseas, where would you like to perform first?

HEATH: First, Germany.

JRR: Germany? Why is that?

HEATH: I have a friend in Germany. Someone I met once in Japan.

JRR: Come to think of it, a lot of the younger bands have been going to Germany lately.

HEATH: Oh, really?

JRR: Yes, a number of them. I think GAZETTE and several others, too. Jrock groups are relatively popular in Germany and France these days.

HEATH: Well, I want to go there, too.

JRR: Japanese rock, particularly visual kei, is getting more and more popular overseas. Given that that's something X JAPAN started, how does it make you feel to see that now?

HEATH: It's as if Japan[ese artists] have finally pushed open the door from their side to let their light shine outside, as well. Everyone has always said that “There are no borders to music,” but few [Japanese artists] have moved beyond the borders—and, of those who did, most didn't leave any impression. It seems that only now the time has come that Japanese rock moves beyond Japan's borders. Since we are in those times at this moment, I think that there are things we need to do, things that I really want to do from now on.

JRR: For example?

HEATH: First of all, a[n overseas] live. I want to do a live concert there.

JRR: A solo live or...?

HEATH: Anything, all, whatever. (Laughs.)

JRR: Everything then? Solo and X JAPAN and LYNX?

HEATH: It's gotten so that there are a lot of offers, and I'd really like to go those places where people are waiting. I want them to listen to our music, to watch us.

JRR: There are people waiting for you overseas for sure. In Europe, there is a fan generated “let's all write and collect letters to send to X to bring them to Europe” action going on.

HEATH: That's amazing to hear.

JRR: Back to yourself: are there any Japanese or foreign artists that you like, ones that you would say have influenced you? Led Zeppelin comes to mind since you did a cover of their “Rock and Roll.”

HEATH: Of foreign bands, I think the first I liked was Motley Crue. Then, maybe a bit different from most guys my age, I like Deep Purple. Also, groups like Rainbow and KISS. After that came Japanese bands in what was a bit of a Japan bands boom then, a boom of “Japan Metal.” That really excited me. X, naturally, is among the bands of that period. During the indies “Japan Metal” time. Much later, there were bands like Nine Inch Nails among the foreign groups that I like.

JRR: Is there any band in Japan right now that you'd like foreign fans to listen to?

HEATH: Yes, there is. (Points to a poster on the wall.)

JRR: THE UNDERNEATH. They are already performing in the USA.

HEATH: I think they are making really great music.

JRR: Have you been to their lives?

HEATH: Not yet, but I had a chance to listen to their master CD. I really think that it's great music.

JRR: THE UNDERNEATH is a very new group?

HEATH: They are new as THE UNDERNEATH, but all of those guys have already had long careers.

JRR: Back to your own music: something else you did was Dope HEADz, with PATA and INA [from SPREAD BEAVER]. Nothing is happening with that, but there hasn't been any break up announcement, either.

HEATH: No, we didn't disband. We’ve suspended activities with that, so maybe one day, if we have the chance again, we might do something again with that.

JRR: We asked PATA about that, when talking to him, and he said something like that, too. So how about you really do it?

HEATH: (Laughs.) Okay; we'll see.

JRR: What you will be doing next is Tokyo Dome. Tokyo Dome is actually where you played your first live as member of X JAPAN, isn't it?

HEATH: It is.

JRR: What did that feel like, your first music major league live at Tokyo Dome? Instead of the usual way, moving from livehouses to increasingly larger venues, moving up immediately to Tokyo Dome.

HEATH: Actually, what I thought then while on the stage was that it wasn't really different. Whether it's playing in a livehouse or Tokyo Dome, what you do doesn't change. Whether it's fifty people or fifty thousand people, you've got to do your best in any place. Regardless of the numbers, you should always try for 120% perfection. So there isn't any feeling of tremendous pressure in my memory for that. On the other hand, what impressed me that night was the fans’ reaction—how they welcomed us, the intensity of that. But that wasn't pressure; that was a pleasure, to realize that people wanted X so much, had waited so long. The overwhelming screaming and cheering when we came out.

JRR: How do you think the upcoming lives will be?

HEATH: I'd like to know that, too. At this moment, it's not something I can imagine yet. Also, I think that even if I would try to imagine it, the actual nights will probably go beyond anything that I could imagine. Ten years is ten years, after all, and while I think that many of our old fans will be there, there'll also be a lot of new ones. Sometimes in my [fan] mail—the youngest fan I've ever gotten mail from was an elementary school student—I get messages that say things like, “I've only known X after the break up. The only way I've seen you perform is on screen and never in reality. I'm looking forward so much to seeing you now.”

JRR: I look forward to seeing that again, too.

JRR: During those ten years, you've still been in contact with PATA.

HEATH: Yes, we meet occasionally.

JRR: How was it to meet YOSHIKI and TOSHI again after ten years?

HEATH: It didn't feel like ten years. Well, first YOSHIKI, PATA, and I met, but [with YOSHIKI] that really didn't feel like meeting again after ten years; it was more like “long time, no see.” Then I met TOSHI in the recording studio, and that was like, “You doing okay?” Almost like there hadn't been that ten year gap at all—the old connections were right there again, without any awkwardness.

JRR: Talking about old times, are there any of the old songs that you really want to play during the lives?

HEATH: If I had to choose only one… “WEEK END.”

JRR: Why that one?

HEATH: There are some memories connected to that. That is… While playing bass, I never really sang chorus. For “WEEK END,” they said, “Come on, do it.” Then TOSHI gave me some special coaching for that, and then—without instruments—TOSHI, HIDE, and I practiced the chorus together. I really loved how it came together into harmony during our practices.

JRR: That would be fun to see again. Incidentally, something different that was fun to see was your Myspace profile until that suddenly disappeared. What happened to that?

HEATH: That actually wasn't me.

JRR: That wasn't you? It did say “HEATH PROJECT”...

HEATH: No, someone else did that without asking me. I even told people it wasn’t me when they said, “Oh, you made a Myspace profile, didn't you?” But they kept telling me that it was there, so I checked. And yes, it was there. But someone actually did that without asking.

JRR: Have you thought about making one? Even PATA has one now, TOSHI made one last year, and YOSHIKI has had his for forever. So only you are missing.

HEATH: (Laughs.) Let me think about it? Everybody keeps telling me that I should, but...

JRR: Your foreign fans want you to for sure. And it's a very fast way to communicate.

HEATH: At the moment, I don't have any idea yet what Myspace is all about. Even though it's been explained to me, I haven't really yet figured out how it works. When and if I do, and if I come to think that it might be fun, I might do it. But for the moment, I still have too many unanswered questions.

JRR: Such as?

HEATH: They’re not technical questions. They’re more basic—like, what is Myspace? What's it good for, what can you do with it? I haven't figured that out yet.

JRR: For artists, it's something of a promotional tool, to announce events or music releases. Also, it’s a way to directly communicate with fans.

HEATH: Do you know [Japanese social networking site] MIXI? It took me some time to figure that one out, too.

JRR: Do you use MIXI?

HEATH: I did for a bit, but I stopped.

JRR: Since you are checking things online, did you look at the Jrock Revolution site?

HEATH: I did, yes.

JRR: What is your impression of it?

HEATH: I thought that it was well done. (Laughs.) Well, I didn't look at all of the pages, but things like the interviews, information about bands, you can get all that very easily in Japan. But, even now, it's almost always only on paper. So seeing all that online on Jrock Revolution made me think that it's a very exciting site.

JRR: Thank you very much. That's a wonderful compliment. And when you do something overseas, may we feature that, too?

HEATH: Naturally.

JRR: So what are your next plans then?

HEATH: At this point, first of all, X. Someway, somehow.

JRR: Someway, somehow? In what form?

HEATH: I want to do something that goes beyond all expectations with X. And I still want to do things solo and with LYNX.

JRR: That's a problem of time [scheduling]?

HEATH: No, time [not having any]'s the problem. (Laughs.)

JRR: Is that so? (Laughs.) Even with that, may we look forward to more things from you?

HEATH: Please do.

JRR: We'll take you up on that. And to come to an end for today, may we ask you for a message to your overseas fans and to the readers of Jrock Revolution?

HEATH: Hello everybody on Jrock Revolution, this is HEATH. How are you? This was my first interview [with Jrock Revolution], but I think maybe you'll learn a little more about me from it.  On Sunday January 8th I had the pleasure of having afternoon tea with hide’s mum in the garden of their family home.  It was, to say the least, a somewhat surreal experience…and a most unexpected one!

A fellow X fan and myself made a visit to hide’s grave, one of my many visits over the past few years.  As usual the grave was looking so very beautiful…colourful, fun and well-maintained.

Heading back to hide’s hometown of Yokosuka and we set of to Yajima Records where I have, in the past, dropped quite a lot of yen and where hide, as a student, frequented.  We looked around there and were encouraged by the owner to go and drop in to the Matsumoto’s (as he thrust a map in my hand).  I had passed the family home on several occasions before but only to look and never to drop in.  I insisted that it would be rude and disrespectful, he insisted otherwise.  As we wanted to see the house, but were not expecting anything but a peek, we set out in that direction. 

Much to our amazement, when we arrived, there was hide’s mum in the garden.  She kindly invited us in, asked us to sign the book in the post box and sat us down on the garden seats.  Yes, there we were, with hide’s mum.  Unbelievable.

Next thing we knew she gave us a hide towel each as a gift.  She was very talkative and friendly.   We talked about all kinds of things.  She then said she’d make us tea and left us for a while as she prepared it.  I think I was in a daze by this stage.

Anyway, she took a while inside, finally coming out with a big pot of tea in a yellow teapot with red hearts over it (like his guitar).  She had a cup in the same design, we beautiful Noritake cups and saucers (I collect China so I was thrilled to be offered tea in such a beautiful cup and saucer by none other than hide’s mum!).  She told us that she preferred Lady Grey to Earl Grey.  I now have a taste for Lady Grey!

We continued chatting.  I could feel her loneliness and sadness over hide.  It is only natural, even after all this time.  Speaking with her soothed my spirit.  She answered some questions I wanted to ask about hide for a long time.  One question was about the kind of work her and hide’s father did when he was a child (they ran a kind of snack bar) and whether or not hide could speak English or not (she said he could to some degree).

While chatting she pulled out a phone strap each for us…a hide doll in his blue checked suit, with the aforementioned yellow/red heart guitar and big pink hair.  Very cute.  She had also given me a “kairo”, a heat pack to keep warm on such a cold day.

I asked if we could have a photo together but, while being very apologetic, said that she had made a promise to hide not to take photos with fans.  Although he appreciated her kindness to fans he clearly worried that it could become too much.  Of course I understood this.  I will always have the memory and that’s what counts most.

On leaving she insisted we take all the snacks she had brought out, filling our bags with all kinds of goodies.

It was an encounter that I will never forget…a chance meeting in that we were passing just at the right time.

Thank you hide and thank you hide’s mum.  This meeting helped to lift me somewhat out of a very tough time I am having.

And, thank you to my new friend who I was with that day.  You know who you are ;)

Vocalist for XJAPAN, and active solo artist.As XJAPAN performed a 2 DAYS show in Yokohama Nissan Stadium on August 2010, later followed by a world tour. Their activity is not just limited to Japan, but also the whole world.At the world tour, commenced in September of 2010, XJAPAN received high praise from both fans and press in North America.In June 2011 they released "Scarlet Love Song", theme song for the film adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's "Buddha". The song hit #1 on the charts.From late June to early July of 2011 XJAPAN went on the European leg of the world tour. Later in August they performed at "Summer Sonic", the largest rock festival in Japan. The South American leg of the tour was confirmed in September.As solo artist, Toshi has performed a Special Dinner & Concert with his old friend and XJAPAN member YOSHIKI. The two performed as Toshl Feat.YOSHIKI, and invited Kiyomi Mikuni as guest chef. The event was renowned for being one of the biggest and expensive Dinner shows to date.In August 2011, Toshi Feat.YOSHIKI held the much talked about "second Dinner & Concert".In October 2011 XJAPAN performed the final leg of the world tour in Asia.In November 2011 Toshi joined a campaign against drug abuse where he personally spoke about the horrors of drugs, and sent a song about the joys of living to many people…

Yoshiki, the classically trained multi-instrumentalist and leader of one of Japan’s most successful rock groups, X-Japan, will compose the theme for this year’s Golden Globe Awards show. The announcement was made by Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Dr.Aida Takla-O’Reilly and dick clark   productions  executive  Barry Adelman.

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards airs on Sunday, January 15, 2012, around the world and live coast-to-coast on NBC with the pre-show from  4:00-5:00p.m. (PST)/7:00-8:00p.m. (EST), and main telecast from 5:00-8:00 (PST)/8:00pm-11:00p.m., (EST), hosted by Ricky Gervais from the Beverly Hilton Hotel.    “Yoshiki is a world-renowned musician and composer of enormous talent and versatility, who in addition to being a rock superstar has composed for film and television,” said Dr.  Takla-O’Reilly. “As an international organization dedicated to creative achievements, the HFPA is delighted to have a global musical artist of Yoshiki’s stature create the theme for the show.”

Added Adelman, “We look forward to incorporating Yoshiki’s music into the production of the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards.”

“The Golden Globe Awards are extremely prestigious, but the show is also edgy,” said Yoshiki, who attended the awards presentation for the first time last year. “I’m a classical pianist and a rock drummer, so it was natural to create something beautiful that also has an edge.”
Yoshiki, considered Asia’s most influential music artist and biggest rock icon, is also a songwriter, drummer, and a classically-trained pianist. His rock group X Japan has sold 30-million singles and albums combined and filled the 55,000-seat Toyko Dome a record 18 times. Now the band’s popularity is spreading throughout the world, having recently completed a sold-out World Tour, performing in North America, Europe, Latin America, and South East Asia. In 1999, Yoshiki composed a piano concerto and performed it with a 77-piece orchestra to celebrate the tenth year of the Emperor of Japan’s reign.  In 2005, Yoshiki composed the theme song and conducted the Super World Orchestra at the opening ceremony of the World Expo.  Previously, Yoshiki also recorded a classical album co-produced and arranged by acclaimed Beatles producer Sir George Martin and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Recently, the legendary Stan Lee created a Super Hero based on him, and for the first time, a Hello Kitty product line is named after a person – “Yoshikitty.”

Sugizo / Sugizo Time to move on, says the visual kei icon

The celebrated guitarist for X Japan and Luna Sea, just back from enthralling thousands in Bangkok, is running an hour late. It’s with expectations of a star-size ego that I enter a meeting room at his agency to see Sugizo already at a table.

All sunglasses and leather—he certainly looks the rock god. But it’s with soft-spoken humility that Sugizo tells me about the X Japan concert in Thailand’s rain-soaked capital.

“The Thai fans waited a long time, so we were determined not to let the flood stop our show,” he begins. “It was the first time for me to go to Thailand, and after the cancelation of X Japan’s Beijing concert it would have been really disappointing.” Giants of the visual kei movement, X Japan and Luna Sea are at a level where their concerts become political footballs. Sugizo first experienced a Chinese cancelation when Luna Sea’s Beijing and Shanghai concerts were called off last year.

“It was at the time of the Senkaku problem,” Sugizo says about the ship collision incident near the disputed islands. “We wanted to go and our Chinese fans wanted us to come, but there was strong anti-Japanese sentiment. This year I was glad when I got the chance to go again with X Japan, but the Beijing show was canceled—this time there seemed to be some problem with the promoter.”

When not performing with X or Luna Sea, Sugizo has a lively solo career. It’s hard to fathom exactly how X Japan or Luna Sea might upset Chinese authorities, but Sugizo takes the politics of his solo music pretty seriously. The second song on his new album Flower of Life is titled “Enola Gay” after the plane that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima.

“The message is that an A-bomb must never be dropped again,” he explains. “My American drummer’s birthday is on August 6 when the bomb was detonated, while my singer is Russian and I’m Japanese. The song reflects the fact that three people from former enemy states with nuclear pasts can be friends. It begins with a sense of terror but gives way to hope for a nuclear-free world.”

Since Fukushima, Sugizo—who has volunteered extensively in Tohoku—is of the opinion that Japanese society needs to be rethought from the ground up. Another song, “Prana,” for example, represents his hopes for clean energy. But he has mixed feelings about the intersection of politics and music.

“I’ve changed,” he says. “For me now, I don’t voice overt political views. It’s something that comes out in my music indirectly. I respect people like Bob Dylan and John Lennon, but I can’t follow them. I can’t simply sing, ‘No war.’ Too much ideology changes the music—that’s something I want to avoid.”

People who know Sugizo from Luna Sea and X Japan might be surprised to learn that his solo work is drenched in electronica. Flower of Life and its companion remix album Tree of Life are informed more than anything by psychedelic trance, and the guitarist performs regularly with psy-trance legends Juno Reactor.

“I’ve been into electronic music for a very long time, and the guitar came after,” explains the son of classical musicians, whose first instrument was the violin. “I found success with Luna Sea, but electronic music is actually closer to my roots as a musician.

“Luna Sea and X Japan are what you might call ‘rock entertainment,’” he expands when asked about his differing approaches. “We need bands like these to reach a wide audience. My solo work is more cult—it’s the difference between art and entertainment. For musicians it’s natural to do both and I don’t like to divide them into separate spheres. It’s journalists and fans who create borders.”

Replacing the deceased Hide as full-time guitarist in X Japan was a big decision. How did Sugizo commit to filling the role of the very guitarist who had discovered Luna Sea, and whose 1998 death, likely by suicide, had elevated him to mythic status?

“First they asked me to support them on tour,” Sugizo recalls. “Of course I said OK. X Japan are old friends and I was close to Hide-san. But it was difficult to imagine being a full member. I thought it over for about a year: What would Luna Sea think? And could I handle three careers? In the end I was swept along with the tide.”

Twenty-three years since Sugizo (Yune Sugihara) helped to define the second wave of the visual kei movement with Luna Sea, where does the now-worldwide scene stand?

“It’s difficult to say, because visual kei is not really a musical genre,” he muses. It’s a culture or style. There are many different sounds: rock, metal, pop, comedy…”
“It’s great that Japanese forms of culture like visual kei and anime have been acknowledged internationally, but at the same time I think this movement will soon end.”

Sugizo says the next scene will not be so closely identified with Japan. “It will be something that is just simply good, not visual kei per se. People who just attach themselves to visual kei will fade quickly, whereas those who create excellent work will be remembered.

“Visual kei has been a bridge to connect Japanese culture to the world,” Sugizo concludes. “But from here on it will be less about presentation than the music itself. Japanese music will continue to be heard worldwide, but the term ‘visual kei’ will fade. We’re now at a crossroads. Our next step is to create truly excellent works.”

Sugizo / SUGIZO set for theatrical performance next Spring

There’s no doubt that SUGIZO’s interest in arts is wide and ranging, and next Spring you will be able to see him perform in a different light.

"7 DOORS - Duke Bluebeard's Castle", a play based on an opera composed by a Hungarian classical composer Béla Bartók, will be performed in Tokyo and Osaka from March to April, 2012. SUGIZO will take part in it not only as a music producer but also as an actor for the role of Bluebeard who lives in a castle with mysterious seven doors, and whom the heroine Judith gets married to.

今年はworld tourで駆け抜けた年となったかな。

In January, participated in Toshi's dinner show.

In April, I participated in Toshi's charity concert.

一年を振り返ると日本でも世界でも沢山Liveしてるな、、。
これだけLive尽くしなのはミュージシャン人生で初かもしれない。
皆と会える機会が多くてほんと嬉しかったよ。

Looking back this year, I had lots of lives in Japan and the world... It may be the first time that I have such a lot of tours in my musician life.
I'm so glad that I had much opportunities that I can see you.

各国の景色やそこで起こった様々な出来事、Liveでの皆の楽しそうな顔、
盛り上がりの様子などがいまでも熱く胸に蘇ります。

The scenery in each counties, and various things that happened there, everyone's happy faces in lives and the atmosphere that everyone gets moving.
Even now those come back in my heart.

It has been a year already.
Ever since that day, I've been thinking about those countless memories I've shared with hide. I thought about them, remembered them, and talked to hide about them. At that time, these precious memories will make me ache whenever I think about them. However, maybe it's because of the one year time, I find these things so warm in my memories. Talking and sharing about these things involving hide with his fans, a year ago, I'd never had thought it was possible. I'm still a little confused right now, and as of here, I'll pick those happy memories. I'll think and try to tell everyone at the same time.
 
The first time I talked to hide, it was when he was still in Saber Tiger. His band and X made this mix CD together, that was the first time I played drums for hide. Before that, I've seen a couple of hide's perfomances, and thought 'What unbelievable performance that was.' However, when we talked for the first time, I've only thought: 'His face looks totally different from when he was on stage.' *laughs*
However, we only communicated to the minimum. The real talk started when X had a performance, and he came.
It was in some staircase, he said, "I'm hide from Saber Tiger." I was shocked, and said: "Eh? really?" His face was different once again. *laughs*

However, when did we become really close? I really don't remember. We became close friends unknowingly, and then, we started hanging out often. The first time hide and I performed together, I think it was probably on 'Explosion', at that time, I used to put fire in a pot. One day, the fire was too big, and the place was too small. All the audiences went out for safety, my face, hide's face, everyone's face was all black afterwards.
 
There are many mysteries revolving hide. One mystery that still remains today is: for some unknown reason, hide would not like anyone see his top naked. When we were backstage, we usually hung out together, so how could we not see the top part? But, really, I've seen the bottom half, but really have never seen the top half. *laughs* He's always changing secretively in a corner somewhere.
"hide, do you have chest hair?"
Even though we were joking, but in a live, when Toshi would say 'take it off', hide would never take it off. He'd always say 'take it off', but he'd never do so himself. He really does follow his own rules.
Even when we went swimming, he still has to wear a shirt. That scene is really weird and somewhat suspicious.
Talking about swimming, hide nearly drowned in my swimming pool at my LA house. *laughs*
hide was drunk and three roddy (some dude) into my swimming pool, and then, I threw hide into the swimming pool. My pool is actually quite deep.
And then, he would scream "I can't reach the bottom... I can't swim anymore..." and swim at the same time.
.... it was not really swimming, more like drowning....
 
Oh yes, also our 'food fight'.
hide always thought that if we go to a really expensive, high class restaurant, then everything'll taste good there. The most important part is, his taste buds are a bit off. Whose taste bud is actually correct? There was once a magazine that used this question and went into a 'argument' state. hide's reasons was: if you mix together all these tasty food, then there'd be no reason for them not to taste good! Even if it was kidney and tofu mixed together, which are in no relevance to each other, he'd still say it tastes good.
I say "That's really strange."
For example, I like to eat pudding and sea urchin, but they definitely wouldn't taste good mixed together. No matter how tasty the food is, if you eat it with something that doesn't have any relevance to eachother, it won't taste good.
 
Ah, but, after hide's drunk, he wouldn't know what he'd be eating, he'll just eat everything and anything. So... in the end, we don't know if hide is good at drinking or bad at drinking.
I think he wasn't that good. He would get drunk easily and then start destroying.
But, I'm the only one that could stop hide.
I'd always get our manager's call, "Yoshiki, hide is going crazy again, please come over."
Then, I'd go over to where hide's drinking.
"hide-chan."
He would respond really quickly.
"Hai?" And then he'd stop and ask me. "Ah, what did I do?"
 
Not only is his taste bad, but his eyes are bad too, he always said 'I can't drive in the night.'
When we were in X, hide and I were the only ones that could drive. When we were still Indies, hide and I took our turns driving. But, he can't drive at night! But... when we're travelling from place to place, it's usually at night. Therefore, it was always me that drove, and we used to argue much over this topic. *laughs*
 
And then, there was this period of time where hide was crazy about 'hat'.
I don't remember which concert, but after the live, we got back to our hotel, and the fire alarm went off.
"What happened?" When I ran outside, hide was holding the fire extinguisher and yelling "My hat is missing!"
After that, I cared for hide's hat like I would for a musical instrument. Before a live, I'd ask "hide, is your hat with you?"
When we were in Shibuya once, I asked him, "Where is your hat?"
"It's here. Oh yeah, let's make a song about hats." And then he started singing "My hat, it's like this and like that..." and walked on at the same time.
Strange person.
 
That's right, there're endless things we could talk about. But if we continue like this, even a month wouldn't be enough. But, out of everything, the most vivid memories are still the ones that hide and me, and the members and the fans all shared. The memories are too beautiful, that's why it's even sadder. But, they gave the me today, the strength to live on every single day. To those fans that created all these memories with us, and of course hide as well...

Excerpt of an interview with hide

I don't sweat much so tears are what I shed the most. I'm a cry baby. I'm not a girl so I don't bleed much *laugh*, and I don't sweat a lot. Even when I'm on stage, my makeup doesn't run because my face mostly stays dry. It's my body that becomes the problem instead. I wear fitted costumes because I'd rather not show skin but underneath I'm like the Kegon waterfall *laugh*. What? A face that doesn't sweat is a requirement for an idol? Well then, I must be a natural~ *laugh*


I cry for many different reasons. For example, if I see someone playing a dirty joke in a movie I'll start crying. I'll cry easily at movies like An Officer and a Gentleman. And at tear jerker movies. I don't cry much over TV shows though. I'm the type of guy who'll cry at movie scenes that were made especially for that purpose. I don't go to the movies very often but if I went to see a movie like that, I'm sure I'd cry. Though, I'd really prefer to break down in front of a rented tape *laugh*.

If I get nervous or excited when I'm talking my eyes will well up with tears, even if there's absolutely nothing to be sad about. That's why I cry so often. It's not that I'll be sad, or ecstatic, my tear ducts simply let loose the moment the situation becomes too tense. Like during lives. But there's no way I'd want people to see that so then I'll let out a bit yell, on purpose. My band's full of guys with weak tear ducts. Pata though, I don't get him. I think his tear ducts run through his liver because so often he'll say he brought gin, but it all just sounds like drunken belching to me *laugh*. Yoshiki, Taiji and me, we're cry babies. Even Toshi turns teary a lot on stage. The hell, are we a whole band of bry babies?! Pata is the only cool one...composed, manly, can hold his alcohol *laugh*. But that's alright, all trendy men cry a lot. I think *laugh*.

As for blood...I get injured pretty often. And now that I'm thinking about it, it's my hands that I hurt a lot. Especially my knuckles. But even back when I was still a bratty kid I'd break my bones pretty often. I've already broken my ankle roller skating. Plus I was sick a lot when I was a kid. I used to get hospitalised regularly with neurological gastritis. Cars would always make me sick, I'd have enough after five seconds and it wasn't the gasoline stench, I just couldn't take the smell of rubber. I somehow convinced myself that I couldn't stand it and it seems that that was the cause of my gastritis. Then a teacher told me that it would get better on its own as I grew up and it really did. Though even now I still sometimes have trouble with taxis. Seems to me that it's all mental though.

The X JAPAN street teams from Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, Chile and Brasil have joined to organize this action for HIDE's Bday. Next 13th December will be the bday of this big musician and person. Although he isn't here with us we want to remember him, and for this reason we have organized this action. To make it more enjoyable we have organized a kind of competition.
