This is a very interesting topic. I don't know the first thing about Western band history but I remember that X Japan podcast guys talked about Nirvana briefly, in Jealousy episode IIRC.

You are right. I've never heard or read about Yoshiki talking about Nirvana - both in English and Japanese media.

Well, when fans talk about Yoshiki, they often say that Yoshiki is trapped in the past - his father's suicide, hide's death, X Japan's disbandment and so on...

But I pay more attention to what he has never talked about. e.g. AOL album's not releasing in the West or failure in releasing DAHLIA album English version. I've read and watched a lot of his interviews in Japanese. He promoted Art of Life album in Japanese variety shows and magazines. Even in an interview done in 1993, he said AOL album would be released in Europe, and said he and his management company were considering about American market at that time. But it was not released in the West. Since then, he's never talked about the topic.

As a psuedo psychiatrist, I believe his real trauma is the failure in entering the American music industry. His father's death, hide's death... they will still hurt him. But he's spoken openly about it thousand times. If you can say something publicly, you have overcome it somewhat. I think so.

Pata / Re: Pata Translation

Messages sent by HIDE to PATA (excerpt from the PATA’s Guitar Book)

The PATA’s Guitar Book(1994) has a supplement called “Message to PATA”, which contains messages from 51 people. Among them, hide’s message.

■ HIDE (X)

When I joined X, there was still a (former) guitarist. But he got into an accident and was unable to play the guitar, so Yoshiki brought PATA. My first impression of him was was very thin. He was giving off an image of music store clerk. Actually, he was a video rental store clerk(laughs).

I always hang out with PATA after our debut. He was my neighbor. I told him when he was about to move, “Move near my house”, and he moved to a place very close to my home, into the immediate vicinity. But I didn’t drink much at that time. If it wasn’t for parties, I rarely drink alcohol. Drinking was a kind of event until I met PATA. However, alcohol has become a daily routine since I hung out with PATA. The guy is always drinking. He is my alcohol teacher. Everything is due to PATA. He has made me this way. PATA is bad. I misinterpreted PATA’s teachings. PATA is on the right track, but I, who looked up to PATA as a teacher and entered the alcohol track, am on the wrong track(laughs).

Recently, PATA is strange. He is bright when he drinks. In the past, he didn’t change at all even if he drinks, but recently I can see that he is drunk at a glance. He is different from me or Yoshiki when he's drunk. Like a nice drunk uncle. He used to drink saying “Mu~” but these days, he says something like “I am~”. But I like the guy as he is now. It is fun.

By the way, I used to put on make up of PATA before concerts. PATA of that days had the most horrible appearance. One day I drew letters on his face like Mimi-Nashi-Hoichi(耳なし芳一), one day I made half of his face keloid... It changed everyday. When I asked “PATA, what would you like to do today?”, he answered “Do anything”. Perhaps, he didn’t know how he looked on stage. Because he was always drinking(laughs). I shaved the hair of drunk PATA. One day we decided to have our hair dyed, and the next day, he suddenly showed up with red hair. He is usually gentle, but becomes bold when he makes up his mind! I was amazed.

PATA is an amazing guitar uncle. Back in the days, we stayed in a room and made songs together. A man who weirdly plays speedy guitar solo. I don’t think he plays very fast, but he probably enjoys speedy playing. He rarely does it, but if you request, “Play it speedily” then he will play for you. But you can’t tell what he is playing(laughs). PATA’s speedy playing when he is in trouble! I can’t do it. So ask it to PATA, he’s going to do it for you.

I have lots of anecdotes about PATA, but I feel I’ve talked them all before. However, since this is a PATA’s book, is it not better to write about the episode of Armani? One day, we all were talking about Armani. PATA, who was listening to us asked abruptly, “What is that Armani? Yummy?” Everyone there became silent(laughs).

(1:40~) HIDE is so excited about shouting “Armani? Taste good?” and makes the audience repeat after him. He is so happy to tease PATA. Some audience are holding a sign written “Armani? Taste good?”

One day of indies era, after drinking at a bar we were walking and going on the rampage on the street. Someone broke a signboard, and the barkeeper dragged PATA, who was walking from behind, into the bar. The barkeeper was fuming “You bastard, come on”  Guess what PATA told the barkeeper. He said, “Can you get me a beer?”(laughs). He is fucking awesome!

Recently PATA is fine. For the last one year in particular. He used to say that he shrinks in Japan, but feels well in the States. He looks lively probably because he often stays in LA. I heard that the flame is the brightest at the end. Wish he was not the case(laughs). When I heard that PATA was working on a solo album, I thought I had to push him. When I kidnapped PATA for a jet coaster, he said “I can do it”, so I asked him to let me listen to the songs. Then there were only the riffs on the drums and bass. Nevertheless, he said “Recording is going on. No problem”, so I was seriously worried. But the album came out sooner than the other’s albums in the end. I listened to it and it’s amazing! I’ve never seen PATA anxious or lost. Even at times when an ordinary person panics, such as knocking down beer glasses, PATA is very calm.

I often touched his hair on stage. When I touched his hair from behind, he got angry. Once, PATA disappeared from the stage suddenly. “Where did he go?” I was surprised. He actually fell down into the mosh pit. PATA was not in a panic even at that moment. He is PATA(laughs). By the way, he didn’t realize that his fingers had been broken or dislocated for a long time. He saw a doctor by chance and was told “It’s broken”. He’s a guy like that. He’s rarely agitated. I’m concerned though. What if he can’t notice even when he dies?

Just after our debut, there were days when I was ruining and going through a rough time. PATA came over to my place and put down a bottle of alcohol on the floor. He didn’t tell me something like “Don’t say anything, Just drink.” but he had such an atmosphere. I mean the atmosphere like a monk(laughs). He is not very sensitive, but takes good care of others in case of need. Very reliable. He relieves me by just being close to me. Somehow, a fascinating person.

Yoshiki / Re: Yoshiki Translation
« on: February 23, 2019, 02:36:12 AM »
I watched this video and it contains a very interesting analysis on X Japan. I really relate to this.

(6:30~10:10)

"I like heavy metal, in particular European melodic speed metal. When I used to listen to X Japan, I merely thought that they
were a band with speed and oriental flavor. After listening to a lot of various music and then I listened to X Japan again. Finally I was able to feel that the music level of them was very high. Helloween is considered to be the origin of European melodic speed metal.  This genre has explosively grown since Helloween made its debut. And I dare to say that X Japan has established Asian Melodic Speed metal on the other side of the globe. It is a band with tremendous musicality.

X Japan's melodies of oriental scale are very impressive. The songs are beautiful, lyrical, and at the same time, very speedy. These are very rare. Most heavy metal or speed metal dash with dry and sharp elements. Whereas X Japan adds other instruments and a beautiful orchestration in it so that the melody line becomes distinct. I believe that X Japan succeeded in establishing a unique musical territory of itself.

The Blue Blood album has a lot of melodic, powerful and speedy songs in it. Their unique musicality reached the peak in the song called Silent Jealousy. I've listened to a lot of awesome speed metal. In my opinion, Silent Jealousy is one of the top.

As far as I know, a great bassist, the late Taiji's arrangement and the ability of metal approach significantly influenced to create the masterpiece. I value Taiji as a great musician. Taiji mixed the symphonic attempts made by Yoshiki with the metal to enhance the perfection of the music. This cannot be done without a great musical technique. Without musical skills, it can be tacky or awkward.

It is awesome that they have been doing this since early on. The quality of symphonic speed metal has risen dramatically since the Rhapsody of Fire, and the metalic elements have crossed over the the classical melodies. Symphonic speed metal songs have come out since then. X Japan, however, has already been making such attempts in the late 80s. And in the early 90s, they established a symphonic speed metal musically. This is a great achievement.

It is thanks to the unique oriental culture. Because the East places importance on melody. And the oriental melody is the musical characteristic of X Japan. They could go one step further because of it. The combination of Western speed metal and oriental melody produced the progressive music.

Yoshiki / Yoshiki Translation
« on: February 13, 2019, 11:16:44 AM »
(This is a thread for petty and unimportant translations related to Yoshiki. I’ll post it here little by little.)

I discovered an artist named Yumi a few days ago, and it is incredibly interesting to investigate her. The other day, I read a post on blueverse(longtime X fan)’s blog. She was watching this show in real time in 1993. According to her, Yumi was already a great figure in Japanese music scene. Yoshiki, on the other hand, seemed to be obscure to the general public back then. The blogger watched the show and thought “Who is that naughty brat with a weird makeup?” Anyway, it is interesting to hear about the differences in the composing styles of the two composers.

https://www.bilibili.com/video/av14213250/

Tamori’s Music Station, January 4th, 1993
Guest : YOSHIKI, Yumi Matsutoya(Yuming)

Tamori  : You’re going to introduce another guest today?

YOSHIKI : Yes, my close friend Yuming.

Tamori : Ah, is that so?

YOSHIKI : Yup.

(Yuming shows up)

Yuming : Hello! Happy new year!

Tamori : Happy new year! Have a seat please.

YOSHIKI : It’s been a while.

Yuming : Right? What’s it been, like, half a year?

YOSHIKI : I don’t think so. It will be about 3 to 4 months.

Tamori : Is it long to know each other?

Yuming : But I’m surprised! I’ve seen only his no makeup face. It’s the first time.

Tamori : I’ve seen only his makeup face.

(Yoshiki pours champagne to Yuming’s glass)

Yuming : In LA, I made him sweet red-been porridge with rice dumplings.

(Yoshiki pours champagne to Tamori’s glass)

Yuming : He came over to my place.

Tamori : Did you cook sweet red-been porridge for him?

Yuming : Yes.

YOSHIKI : (keep pouring champagne) Feels like I became a bar hostess.

Yuming : That’s why they’re partners.

Tamori : I heard that you play drums with such a really fast phrase?

YOSHIKI : Yes.

Tamori : Is it true that you write the musical notes at first?

YOSHIKI : Ah, I write it all. I write drums on the score and then play it. I suffer under it later. “What shall I do?”, “Well, let’s do this”... like that. (Swinging  arms)

Tamori : Oh, do you?

YOSHIKI : At first, only on the score...

Yuming : Do you make choreography as well?

YOSHIKI : So when I write the music score and play the drums at the same time, choreography goes in it like this. Since my body was broken once, I went to see multiple doctors and heard that a circular motion is good for humans, if I bounce like this completely.

Yuming : Wow, that’s so interesting!

YOSHIKI : But the best thing is the mark of infinity(∞). Energy doesn’t stop there, as it comes back.

Tamori : Before you play the drums, do you listen to the song first and then write the music score?

YOSHIKI : No, I mean, I make drum scores. When I record, I put a music stand here, and there is someone who turns over pages. I play the drums while reading the music sheets that are being turned.

Yuming : In the meantime, does your body remember the beat?

YOSHIKI : Right. I remember it before concerts, but when I record it, I read the score.

Tamori : Is there a drummer like that? In the world?

YOSHIKI : Everyone is surprised. Even overseas people.

Tamori : Well, is there a page turner?

OSHIKI : Yes, there is.

Tamori : It must be hard to turn over pages while playing ta-ra-ra-ra-ra. You are the first person in the world.

YOSHIKI : I guess so. But I’m pissed off if they turn the page wrongly. Because I do it at the risk of my life.

Yuming : You are likely to be scary when you get angry.

Tamori : You seem to be incredibly strict about music.

YOSHIKI : When I face music, my personality changes. Yes.

Tamori : (To Yumi) Do you have such a side? Inside of you?

Yuming : I’m easygoing.

YOSHIKI : Yumi is a genius though. I think of myself as a hard worker.

Tamori : There is no showy hard worker like him. Hard workers are more plain. I don’t think there are any male hard workers who put on makeup. You are amazing though. I have to do my job properly. Should I practice biting remarks a hundred times a day? “No, no, no, no, you swine!” something like that? (To Yumi) Is there something you abide by musically? “I have to this” such a thing.

Yumi : I have a habit of daydreaming. I enjoy drifting about a daydream. Weird thing is when I take a bath, I hold a Barbie doll and think “I want to be like this”. It’s like image training.

Tamori : Musicians are weird. Do you necessarily carry the doll when you take a bath?

Yuming : Not necessarily. About once in 3 times.

YOSHIKI : Holding a Yoshiki doll.

Yuming : Yes, a Yoshiki doll.

Tamori : There’s something like this.

Yuming : Ah, cute! Awesome! I wanted to make these things in the past. I like this.

YOSHIKI : Well, let them make Yoshiki’s friend Yumin.

Yuming : Wow, that’s nice! make it, make it.

Tamori : Tamori dolls are probably sold at pharmacies now.

Yuming : Is the doll wearing a hat?

Tamori : No, no, it is merely a simple guy. Here it is. (Hand the Yoshiki doll to Yumin)

Yuming : Thank you. I’m happy. When I go home, I can hook it up with Barbies at home.

Tamori : So in LA, are you still making songs there? The topic went back to music.

YOSHIKI : Yes.

Tamori : How do you make it? Using the piano?

YOSHIKI : I make it using the music score.

Tamori : Just as it is, on the score?

YOSHIKI : Yes. Rather than catching the sound heard while playing the piano, writing from the scratch has less limitation. There is expansion in sound.

Yuming : Nothing surpasses imagination.

YOSHIKI : Agreed. There are limitations in expressing it with the piano, and my fingers have some habits. I think melody is more immortal because there is no limitation.

Tamori : I think I know what you mean. So do you write it on the score abruptly?

YOSHIKI : I do. Afterwards, I distress myself “How to play this?”.

Yuming : If you play it ahead?

Tamori : If you make a sound ahead, there will be the world to that extent. It becomes narrow.

Yuming : Yoshiki plays the instruments but I’m a vocalist. Rather than my voice is heard, it get into my brain through the inner ear. At that time, there is a place where I can feel of temperature somehow before you are restricted by touching the piano. There is a place where I feel comfortable when I sing.

YOSHIKI : I love Yuming's voice so much. You know what, I feel the air is trembling. It feels like you are vibrating the air more when you sing than when you speak.

Tamori : It is unique. I don’t think I can hear your song though.

Yuming : I don’t think I’m motivated to sing. I’m extremely emotional.

Tamori : Oh, really? (To Yoshiki) By the way, do you remember the song of Yumi you first heard?

Yuming : I’m shy.

YOSHIKI : I heard a lot of songs of Yumi. But last year, oh was it the year before? When I collapsed while playing the drums...

Tamori : You collapsed.

YOSHIKI : Yes. My friend made a tape and there was Yumi's song in it. Was the title “Airship”?

Yuming : Oh my, come on. There is a song called “Airplane Cloud”.

YOSHIKI : Ah, airplane, airplane... I’m sorry. I’m going to be blamed by your fans.

Yuming : That’s OK. Even if you know the song, the title is hard to remember.

Tamori : True. The title is...

YOSHIKI : It is the first album of Yuming. Well... the song was about the time falling. No, isn’t it the rain of time?

Yuming : I don’t know what song you’re referring to.

YOSHIKI : Uh, the song about hugging your shoulders. The street of time...

Yuming : The street of rain(雨の街を).

YOSHIKI : Sorry.

Tamori : (To Yumi) Even you don’t know well, I think.

YOSHIKI : Oh yeah! I love the song. I heard that song by chance at that time and thought what kind of song it was. I’ve been listening to it all along.

Yuming : Let me try it here. (Stand up and head towards the piano)

Tamori : Ah, awesome! This is luxury.

(Yumi starts playing the piano)

Yuming : This song?

YOSHIKI : Yes. it is good. Yumi is in the background.

Tamori : Very good.

♪ The rain of dawn is milk color, into a quiet street~
♪ Comes down whispering, O fairies~
♪ If someone gently hugs my shoulders~
♪ I can walk anywhere far away~~
♪ I can walk anywhere~

(applause)

Tamori : This is luxury!

Yuming : Is that so? I like it. In this cozy place, voila! I’m a high class Geisha!

Tamori : This is a high class. This is good!

Yuming : I mean, I don’t feel like singing on TV at all. Now, I forgot that it was TV. I like things like salon musicians.

Tamori : This is luxury. Drinking champagne and listening to Yumi as a background music. It was good to be an entertainer.

Yuming : Really? Don‘t tell a lie.

Tamori : Really.

BTW, I watched this video and really love her. She has energy of craziness.

That's true. 日本(Nihon/Nippon) also has the meaning of "The Sun's Origin" as Hatsor and Kasumi mentioned. The name "Nihon" would had been used long before "Jipang" was first used, namely long before the European adventurers discovered Japan. Nevertheless, it still implies "The East".

It's because the name Nihon was also coined in relation to China.

quote "日本 Etymology : This appellation comes from Imperial correspondence between the Chinese Sui Dynasty and Japan, and refers to the eastward position of Japan relative to China."
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E6%97%A5%E6%9C%AC

As you probably know, from ancient times to modern times, the center of East Asia was China. Most civilizations like letter, books and philosophies were all imported from China. And at that time, the people who could read were privileged(Kanji is damn difficult to read). Consequentially, The more the ruling class, the more had the Sinocentrism.

That is to say, "Nihon - The Sun's Origin" is also outsiders' viewpoint. I bet that Japanese ordinary people like farmers, fishermen and women would have thought "Why is Japan a country of sun rising?".

And I agree with matsumoto. When I saw Hyde's Bodhisattva make-up in the MV, I thought it was over the top. It doesn't even look like Japanese thing. It reminds me of Hindu's tantric sex god. But if his intention was Orientalism, his intention hit the bull's eye.

BTW, the music I felt most Japanese is this. 春よ、こい(May Spring Come).

(It is subtitled in English in the video)

This song has been covered by many singers.

ㄴ I like this version as well.

Actually I first listened to the song that was covered in my native language. I like this version too.

I've thought that it was a song made in the '50s or before that. Today, I realized that it was written in 1994, and more surprisingly, by a female artist. And more surprisingly, she(the artist) has appeared on a talk show with Yoshiki.

https://www.bilibili.com/video/av14213250/

I've seen that video in the past, and at that time I had no idea that the singer was the composer of "春よ、来い".

In the video, she sings a song playing the piano.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inf_B9mcT4Q

The song(雨の街を- On the rainy street) is also stunning and very Japanese, I feel.

There are many brilliant musicians in Japan!

I heard(or read) somewhere that the lyrics in ZIPANG were written in an ancient Japanese language. I read the lyrics(https://lyricstranslate.com/ko/hyde-zipang-japanese-version-lyrics.html) and caught the general meaning(with the help of google translator), but can't translate it into another language, because I'm not able to break down the sentences.

The general meaning is "Japan is beautiful", "Spring, summer, autumn, and winter in Japan are beautiful", "The sun rises"... At a word, "Japan is fantastic".

My impression is that the lyrics of this song were written in Orientalism. Like the song title. Jipang/Jipangu was first mentioned by Marco Polo. His book "Il Milione" is full of fantasy and exaggeration about the Orient. I can understand the author. When an adventurer discover the New World, he will be very excited and thrilled. And the viewpoint of the short-term visitor can't be the same as that of the people living there.

You will probably love the place where you live. But is it always beautiful and full of fantasy? For those who live there, they will sometimes be bored and feel sick.

quote "The sun's gonna rise". (Only English sentence in the lyrics)

Yeah, the sun's gonna rise. Though, have you ever thought that it was fascinating to see the sun rises in your country? The sun rises everywhere in the world. The reason he wrote the lyrics that the sun's gonna rise is to emphasize that Japan is in the east. It is also a Western standard that Japan is in the East. For the Japanese, Japan is the center of the world, not the east. I think Hyde wrote the lyrics as a viewpoint of a Western adventurer.

I'm sorry to criticize too much. Anyway, I think this song can appeal to westerners as Hyde's composition is intended.

MC : Hyde and Yoshiki collaborate in front of a world heritage site.

Reporter : Nice to meet you.
Hyde & Yoshiki : Nice to meet you too.

Narrator : The collaboration between L'Arc-en-Ciel’s vocalist Hyde and X Japan’s leader Yoshiki came true. Collaboration song ZIPANG will be released today.

Reporter : What kind of song is it?
Hyde : When I held concerts in foreign countries, I used to think that I want to play a song that emphasizes elegant Japanese melody and the beauty of Japan. One day when I was in Kyoto, I thought to make it now. Because it has an atmosphere.
Yoshiki : Did you compose it in Kyoto?
Hyde : Yes. Since the piano will become main, I thought what if I ask this to Yoshiki. I aimed at timing when Yoshiki was in a good mood and asked him.

Narrator : The theme is Japan, and the music video was taken at Toji(東寺) in Kyoto, which is registered as a World Heritage Site.

Reporter : That is fabulous! What do you call that? Bodhisattva?
Yoshiki : Fabulous!
Hyde : It feels like “What the hell is that?”. I thought I had to do that level in order to win a World Heritage. So I gambled.
Yoshiki : That was a great gamble. You made a set and put a crystal piano there...
Hyde : Above all things, isn’t it the biggest problem if Yoshiki will come or not?
MC : Sure.
Hyde : I asked him “I’d like to film in Kyoto, can you come?” Because he is busy.
Yoshiki : I had a concert in Kyoto the day before.
Hyde : I thought that he might get there if I arrange the shooting time for him.
MC : Great!

Narrator : It is said that the deal of collaboration started from the accidental opportunity.

Hyde : Usually Yoshiki stays in LA. I had an opportunity to eat together and this came up. It was quite a while ago when I first met him. But I was being intimidated by him. I thought like “Finally, it’s time to be beaten up by him”. I was bracing for it, but we really had a wonderful time.
reporter : So, did you talk about collaboration on the spot?
Yoshiki : I received an e-mail. But the mail came under a different name. I didn’t opened the mail. Later I realized that it was the mail, after a month later. I was very sorry.
Hyde : I thought “Is he ignoring me?”

MC : ZIPANG by Hyde and featuring Yoshiki will be released today.

Yoshiki : (To the voice actor) Your articulation is very clear and distinct.

https://www.bilibili.com/video/av33220337/?p=2
(08:10~)

Yoshiki : My pronunciation isn't articulate, so people often say "Your speech is not understandable".

(blogger : I suddenly have a flashback. Back in the day, Yoshiki made a long speech during a meeting. Afterwards, hide said "Yoshiki, I didn't understand a word of yours")

(blogger : When Yoshiki talked about his pronunciation, the voice actor giggled for a while and waved his hand right away. I didn't miss his momentary giggling though. LOL)

Yoshiki : I often hear that. Even my mom used to say, "Speak slowly".

(blogger :  Your mom would have given up by now)

(blogger : You might always have sore ears then. Joke)

Yoshiki : This is a story when I started studying English. I heard that you can't speak English perfectly unless you speak it since you were a kid. I started studying English in earnest at about 27. Everyone said that it would be impossible to be like native if I started from then on.

In the US, there was a doctor who treated people with speech disorder. I went to see the doctor. Kids with speech disorder didn't have the muscles of mouth needed to speak. I trained my muscle with kids over there. As a Japanese, I didn't have the muscles for speaking English.

(blogger : Keep training)

https://www.bilibili.com/video/av33220337/?p=2
(20:15~ )

Yoshiki : Through training, I made the muscles for speaking English and then I got an acting class. I learned dialects in English, such as English of Texas accents, English of New York accents, English of French speakers, and so on.

Yoshiki : There are coaches to teach that. For example, when the coach says, "Your role today is from Texas" then you have to speak Texas English only. When you take such a class, you realize that your English has some accent. I think I can be a 100%... 99.9% native speaker (What?!!), but on the contrary, I decided to appeal my Japanese accent as my attractive feature.

MC : You mean that it's OK to keep a Japanese accent about 0.01%?

Yoshiki : Yes, I think so.

(35:00~)

Yoshiki : I'll do a titan cosplay.

(36:00~)

Yoshiki : (all of a sudden) Is there no Attack on Dwarf?

(blogger : Why is Yoshiki so goofy and lively?)

(37:40~)

Yoshiki : (after listening to the promotion of Yoshiki classical concert "The night dyed purple") I think I have to stop being dyed some colors.

MC : Fans are asking "Are you going to dress in purple at the concert?"

Yoshiki : No. I'll wear Taitan's dress.

Everyone : NO! Please don't do that.

I didn't listen to the whole episode. But the blogger summarized Yoshiki's speech, and according to them, all the furniture in the room, including the bed, is said to be Yoshiki's personal belongings. My guess is that Yoshiki leased one room of a hotel and filled it with his own belongings there, because he often stays in Tokyo. LOL I don't think he carries his bed wherever he goes.

I just realized I had to write the word "stutter" instead of "shutter". I didn't know that.

BTW, why did you guys laugh? Did you notice what I meant? LOL

Yoshiki / Yoshiki talks (181004)
« on: January 29, 2019, 03:55:06 PM »
Hello, folks. Recently I wasn't happy with our beloved band, but today I laughed out so loud reading this. I think it was the first time for me to laugh because of X in almost half a year. Yoshiki is very talented in trolling and making fans upset, yet he is cute in a way. I can't help admitting it. I don't know how to screenshot bilibili and think the comments of this blog are so hilarious, so I directly translated it. Enjoy!

Yoshiki : When I was touring abroad, things didn't go well as planned. For example, when I went to an overseas concert hall, there was no dressing room... many unexpected situations used to happen. Now I think I am fortunate to have experienced something like that.

https://www.bilibili.com/video/av33220337/?p=1
(24:05~)

MC : No matter how many situations there were, it must be the first concert without audience?

Yoshiki : There were something like film gigs, but that's taken only for film. This time, great invisible dolls... ah... not dolls, invisible people... I put the idea into my mind that there are over 30,000 invisible people.

* doll(ningyō) and people(ningen) have similar pronunciation.

(blogger : In Japan, before the disbandment, he held a concert only in a situation where everything was perfectly arranged, but after the reunion, many unexpected situations have been played out)

https://www.bilibili.com/video/av33220337/?p=1
(25:10~)

(blogger : After the concert, Yoshiki was drinking wine in bed and spilled it. People said it was a murder scene)

MC : It is dyed kurenai. (Yoshikichannel) viewers wonder if you were not scolded because of it.

Yoshiki : That is my bed.

MC : Ah!

Yoshiki : Am I not allowed to reveal it? That's my bed.

MC : I thought it was a hotel.

Yoshiki : I can't talk about it in detail, but that is my bed. That's all my personal belonging. Even if it's a hotel, that's my bed, a leather bed. Since those are my futon and my bed... I'm the only one who can scold.

https://www.bilibili.com/video/av33220337/?p=1
(27:55~)

Yoshiki : I ran into the seats for the audience at the no audience concert. People asked why there was a security police next to me.

(blogger : LOL I also thought so. Why? According to Yoshiki, he let the security police follow him in order to control himself who had an intense adrenaline rush)

Today's guest, Yuki Kaji. The voice actor of <Attack on Titan>.

https://www.bilibili.com/video/av33220337/?p=2
(01:20~)

The voice actor Kaji says that Yoshiki's comment before the playing <Hero>, strong myself beats weak myself, was impressive.

https://www.bilibili.com/video/av33220337/?p=2
(01:30~)

Yoshiki : When I was speaking that day, even though I spoke, there was no one in front of me. I was persuading myself while I was talking. There it was. If we wind down a little bit, it becomes like "What the hell are we doing now?".

MC : When you recover consciousness, there is no audience.

Yoshiki : We shouldn't have recovered consciousness. Because it was a situation that I shouldn't have done so.

https://www.bilibili.com/video/av33220337/?p=2
(04:15~)

Yoshiki : You are very young. You look like a teenager.

Kaji : I'm 33 years old. Until I was in my late 20s, when I bought alcohol at convenience stores, sometimes I was told "Please show your identification".

Yoshiki : If you live in the US, you can't go anywhere without your ID card. Because even me, I go to live house once in a while. Minors can't enter a live house where they sell alcohol.

Yoshiki : Even I am told "Show your ID card" when I go to livehouse...

Kaji : Hahaha. If so, I'll just look like a kid to them.

(blogger : In the end, Yoshiki complimented Kaji on his baby face because he wanted bring out this story. But isn't it too much? Even if westerners often mistake East Asians younger than their actual ages, who on earth think you are under age?)

* I will post the rest next time.

Edit: maybe this sentence will clear up what I mean: "It's a pity you didn't come to the party, it was so good" -- it doesn't mean "I am personally disappointed you didn't come to the party".

Thank you for clearing it up. You are perfectly right, "It's a pity" seems to be the closest sentence for 残念. "I feel disappointed" implies that somebody did something wrong, but the word 残念 is not necessarily used like that.

Nevertheless, watching the video sasasama linked, it is obvious that Toshi is disappointed and upset even though he is smiling and saying "Don't worry".

Thank you for the link, sasasama. Now I can see how Toshi used the word as a way of expressing his disappointment.

I think the translation is subtly different in nuance.

<残念> is used as a meaning of "That's too bad", "That's a shame", "That's unfortunate".

A : The match was postponed due to the heavy rain.
B : That's too bad. (残念)

That's why "Personally, I feel disappointed" seems to be slightly exaggerated. I'm not an English speaker and not able to explain well, but it's different anyway. And what is behind the sentence is more important. Because けれども means that something should be added after it due to the nature of Japanese sentence structure. And the following sentence is the key.

Sentences taken out of context and without actually seeing the person saying it can be dangerous.

This. I agree. I'm not defending Yoshiki tho. TBH, they don't look like a band to me, Yoshiki is a boss, other members are employees, Yoshiki orders, other members obey, that's what I felt about the band many times. So it is not strange that this happened.

I think I'm becoming insensitive to Yoshiki's stimulation little by little.

And thank you for the information. I didn't know Toshi sued the tabloid. Actually I do not lurk Japanese fan threads anymore. There are too many rumors and it's unhealthy. I'm glad that
the conflict between Yoshiki and Toshi is groundless.

I'm sorry that this disillusioned you. If it helps, lots of bands operate this way. Yoshiki even said in an English interview that back in the day he would hand all the members their parts... "guitar part, bass part."

That's why X Japan is no longer seen as a band after Taiji and Hide have left. (Of course, this is my personal opinion)

According to Yoshiki, he writes all the parts - even guitar parts and bass parts on his musical score and hands it out to each member. It brings out a question to me "Then why are they a band?".

In my opinion, it's not fair to jump to conclusions about anyone's relationship based on that statement, especially Yoshiki and Toshi. Toshi is not the only one who wasn't at Lunatic fest... the rest of the band wasn't either. Maybe they just didn't want to do it.

I don't think I jumped to conclusions. I just referred to the greatest possibility. From what I've read on Japanese sites, Toshi arranged a fan meeting on the day of Lunatic Festival(or the previous day. I don't remember exactly). There is no reason that Pata or Heath wouldn't want to participate in Lunatic Festival. At first, some people doubted whether heath was the cause of the conflict with yoshiki, because he had some trouble in the past, but this case is different. Heath has no source of income other than X Japan and said that he loves live concerts.

When did he make that name and how did he publicize it?

http://www.x-freaks.com/forum/index.php?topic=7431.0
Early this year. Of course, what people are talking about the name are just speculations.

It's important to consider the time line and see whether he had anything personal business wise going on.

Do you believe Toshi did not attend the premiere because of another schedule?

Japan is the No.1 music economy in the world follow by China and then the United States. X Japan gains nothing financially from going global unles they hit the jackpot. They gain financially from staying in Japan only. It definitely makes sense why Toshi's PR is never pushed towards an English audience.

FYI, Chinese music market is the 10th in the world and one tenth of the size of Japanese market.

Was that the important announcement? LOL

Well, I'm not disappointed. Once I was deeply disappointed before, and there is nothing to be disappointed anymore.

It was when I read a Japanese' comment on Japanese thread. Someone commented that X Japan's members other than Yoshiki have no duty or responsibility for X Japan. All rights for X Japan are reserved to Yoshiki. Other members only make a contact whenever there are concerts or events. Reading that, a lot of fantasy about X Japan has broken.

You know, Japanese celebrities often answer "It's a matter of adults" when they are asked something serious and don't want to reveal everything to public. Yoshiki also said "There is a matter of adults" as a explanation of his appearing in Lunatic Festival as a solo. I don't know what's the "matter of adults" but... probably are there some conflicts between him and Toshi?

Actually when Toshi made a weird stage name like "龍玄とし(ryugentoshi)", many Japanese whispered "Toshi is declaring that he will take a different way from Yoshiki". I don't know what Toshi was thinking but it is certain that ryugentoshi is not a very international name. I agree with them in some way. So whenever X freaks complain about "Why Toshi doesn't write in English in his social media even though he speaks decent English?", I say to myself "Because Toshi is not interested in advancing abroad".

And when some X freaks talked about Toshi's not participating in <We Are X> premiere in Europe, I thought in my heart that "Because <We Are X> is Yoshiki's personal project. Why would Toshi participate in promoting the movie?". I don't think language barrier prevents Toshi from going to the premiere.

There is one thing that bums me out about the announcement. I dislike hyde in terms of appearance and voice.
Nevertheless, hopefully they will produce outstanding music.

When I first read it, I recalled this stage.

ㄴ They are original singers(band).

ㄴ And this singer arranged their song and sang alone.

Of course, that is not a female&male duet song, but the singer distinguished his voice from a soft voice and a rough voice, and sang the song of two people alone. Maybe Toshi can do it that way?
