I've been a long time scavenger of music. I know where to go, when to go, and who to go to when I'm on the search for something to sex my ears up. But there is one thing that I have very rarely found: Another J-rock band that I actually like. I'm sorry but I've tried Dir En Grey's last album (I think it had to word "dark" in it, either that or it had a dark album cover) which made me turn it off the very moment the second track started playing. I've tried Versailles, Hizaki Grace Project, and some other VK band that I forget... they all sound exactly the same to me, from the guitar work to the Enka voices these bands are two shits on the same log. I could go on and on about the bands that I tried and don't like...

long story short, there are very very very few rock bands from Japan that I like. X is soo awesome because their music can send blood rushing through your veins either because of a rough, edgy badass breakdown (ala Kurenai) or because of a high-strung straight from the soul to your ears ballad.

I created this topic for the purpose of recommending fellow fans of X to suggest bands/artists that other X fans can/may appreciate.

There is only one other japanese band that I give my props to, and that is a little band named MUTYUMU. Their sound is something I've never heard before, it's something beautiful hard and jagged at the same time. Their songs truly haunt me in a way no other band has ever done to me before. Their mixture of white, innocent operatic vocals and self-inflicting, vengeful screams makes me shake in disbelief and smile at how perfect and EPIC the band is. So without any further delay: Mutyumu

That Mutyumu song was great!

If you like older X, you could try bands like Flatbacker or Yokosuka Saver Tiger.
Crimson Glory and Queensrÿche also have some similarities with Blue Blood era X.
And AION sounds a bit like X on some rare occasions.

(Sorry for the messy text, I just woke up.)

Edit: I'll post some videos:

hehe.

Anyway, I don't think I know any band in the genre you just put up, I generally tend more towards speed or death metal.

Erm, if you're looking for Silent Jealousy/Blue Blood/Art of Life style speed metal then Versailles is really a no brainer for X fans.

And if you dig the power ballads, go listen to Barry Manilow, as a lot of Yoshiki's ballads are insanely similar (possibly slightly ripped off).

That comes across as if X fans only listen to Japanese music, which I hope isn't the case... ^^

That would be very sad yes. Well, dilbot asked for J-rock, and I pretty much hate glam and VK. The only bands I would think of are the likes of Youthquake, Manipulated Slaves, United, Survive, Break Your Fist or even Crossfaith. And classics like AION yeah.

Non "J-Rock" would include Skeletonwitch, Dark Tranquillity, Amon Amarth, Irminsul, Sepultura, Before The Dawn, Goatwhore, Ensiferum, Illdisposed etc. I tend to Speed/Thrash/Death.

That's nice. So at least there are 2 X-Freaks now who support Youthquake! Did you hear their single 'The Cruel Black'?

Oh no anything is fine, j-rock/j-metal that kinda stuff.

Though I'm not really into that melodic death metal stuff like GreenMachine or Shadow. Sorry not much of a screamo person. I can only handle it in small doses.

AION isn't bad. Are they any good live?

Screamo does NOT equal any music with screaming/growling vocals. It's a subgenre of emotional hardcore, where the vocals are screamed (not growled like in melodeath or death, but really screamed). Sorry for being whiney once again. :-X

And yes, AION are great live!

After reading this thread, I thought I would check out some of the recommendations. Have to say I really like AION! Especially the instrumental “Peter” tracks - from what I have read, I take it IZUMI puts a Peter track on every album? And random question (sorry if it is obvious) but does anyone know why the name Peter?

Nobody has mentioned Helloween? O__o
Helloween is a German speed/thrash metal band [later their sound was more power metal], and I think they are very similiar to early X [indies, Vanishing Vision, maybe even Blue Blood]. Helloween's self-titeled debut album and their second album album "Walls of Jericho" are in my top 5 speed metal records.

Anthrax is also a cool western thrash band, especially with Joey Belladonna on vocals around 1985. "Among the Living" and "Spreading the Disease" are super albums.

AION and Flatbacker were mentioned already [great bands, both]... If someone wants to check out some great japanese metal bands, I'd recommend Rosenfeld, Dead End, Vasalla, vellaDonna, Rommel, Loudness and Casbah ;3

... and damn, 80's Iron Maiden just rocks

OLD SKOOL VISUAL DESTRUXION
GUITAR DRUM BASS

Seikima-II is awesome! I'm a big fan.
I also like Sex Machineguns but their music isn't really that similar to X.
