I saw ferrets post http://www.x-freaks.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3057#3057

and thought I'd up some songs of bands that sound like X (Japan) in the opening (Not the whole song!);

Hellhound - Metal Zone; (Break The Darkness)
Galneryus - My last Farewell. (Rusty Nail)

Both are in the .rar file, choose one of the links:

I think TRAX "Carnival" has an overall X Japan feeling to it, that it7s not actually any particular musical phrases or sequences.

And just my impression.

I don't think 'poor Yoshiki' is the right expression, because I'm sure, Yoshiki was taking this part for Kurenai. It's not a secret, that Yoshiki has used other songs to create his own things.

Yeah and he is not the only one ;P And it's actually kinda fun to see the origins of your favourite songs.

Yeah, but all the times he said it was taken from other songs... he never said that about Kurenai.

Onmyo-Za...

Been listening to their music quite a lot lately and there are some songs on the very early (maybe even the first) album(s) that sound like 1983-1986 (or so) X. Plus, the drums...that drummer is one gifted bastard, I bet he has Yoshiki posters all over the walls of his room!

RIP

Well he didn't exactly take anything from other songs, but you can hear the influences very clearly.

I just found a band on MySpace called Heat because they friend-added me. XD I listened to some of their stuff and noticed that some of it sort of had an X Japan feel to it. Their song "Dreamer" sounds similar to "Weekend" for the most part. o.o
I checked the MySpace of the vocalist, who is first on the "Top Friends" list for Heat, and he mentioned X Japan in his list of heroes, so the band must have drawn at least some influence from them on purpose. XD"
You can check out their MySpace for yourself here: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=229848724

Yeah, you're right the guitar during the verse sounds like Toshi's part and the solos partly are very alike as well.

Remember the weird siren sound in Miscast?

Motley Crue: Dr. Feelgood

Listen at about 3:40 or so, it's the same weird siren. Was that just an 80s thing or maybe they were inspired by the Crue? Hmm...

Lady, lady are you ready to go?
Why do you have to be laying down?

I think everyone that digs indies X and the first two LPs will love the first couple of records by Helloween (especially the first EP and the first two LPs). The every CD copy of the first album includes the first EP, so there you go, hehe. Totally awesome speed metal, with lots of great twin solos, harmonies, leads etc. etc.

Bands that sound like X?  KISS!

(Or perhaps more appropriately: Bands that sound like KISS?  X!)

Yeah, yeah, so it's not exactly the same.  Of course not.  But Kurenai reminds me of Black Diamond and Week End reminds me of Detroit Rock City in ways I can't totally explain.  The feeling is there, and I don't know that Yoshiki was even doing it consciously (since as a KISS fan, those songs were probably permanently installed in his brain).

I think that some of the people that enjoy X's more heavy/speed metal oriented work might enjoy Savage Grave, a US speed metal band from the late 80s. In my opinion, they were even better at this style, creating some of the most energetic (yet very melodic) speed metal in the US.

Here is one of their finest tracks from their best LP (Master Of Disguise):

Savage Grace - Bound To Be Free

This is what speed metal is about, and not that poofter shit like Dragonforce!

The Scorpions have always reminded me of X. Klaus Meine's voice is what I consider to be almost-but-not-as-good as Toshi's.

Woah, I can haz admin colour.

i kinda see where you can say verailles sounds like them but at the same time i can say they dont. the drums do kinda sound like yoshiki. but other than that nothing. verailles are Vampires well thats there image. and the guitars are way faster. and the singing is way diffrent. if anything they are a mege of X and Malice

Versailles sounds pretty interesting musically, but I can't stand this basic japanese rock singing voice.. ugh..  :-\ Might have to check more from them, though!

All X Japan Fans should check out a VK band that disbanded in 2000 called L'Dear, i think if they had stayed together and had grown they could have been as good as X.

I was listening to Nightwish's 2007 album "Dark Passion Play" earlier, and the song "Sahara" struck me as being very Rusty Nail-esque at the introduction.

I don't think that's too shocking, though - I watched Nighwish's documentary and towards the end when the band are in the tour bus playing cards Jealousy by X Japan is playing, so they're definately fans!

No chance. X is playing in a completely different league.

Versailles, definitely, though mostly a Dahlia-ish sound. If you can get past the costumes and the vocalist, they are one of the best bands currently around:
