Mm, that's a diffcult question, the crazy style sometimes was good, for example during the Rose & Blood Tour was great! And the lives were more amazing.
But in their last years they were so cool too, only look at The Last Live :P , but IMO the Toshi's clothes in Dahlia Tour Final 1996 were horrible, so I decide that my favourite era is: 1993 and 1994, simply amazing!! The Art of Life live    and the Music Station Special Live Rusty Nail at Tokyo Dome

hi there

If you really mean X Japan (after name change) Then I'd have to say late 1992/1993 (and 1994, that's about the same as later in 1993).

I loved both styles. From heavy to light. From harsh to clean.

They are successful in doing both.

I definitely like the early X style more than the later X Japan style.
They just looked so great in their crazy outfits  :D

I prefer the more visual look.. That's what X Japan really stands for me, the live band, which leaves even KISS in the shadows. Though, I haven't seen many livevideos as I'm such a new fan..

I prefered thier later look. They seemed to kind of let thier personalities shine through a little more. In the early days they are really dressed kind of simmilar. They obviously didn't all wear the same clothes but they were all going for the same look. Fast forward to the Dahlia tours and the Last Live.

Pata had a more laid back look, the kind of thing a person could walk down the street wearing without getting weird looks, Heath, well, he never really changed his look as far as I could tell, hide was wearing more clolorful outfits rather than the kind of dark clothes he wore in the earlier days along with the others, for the most part Toshi's look changed in a way simmilar to Pata's though he still wore some costumish clothing (those coats, that kind of victorianish shirt during some ballads) and Yoshiki dropped the make up, decided to stop cross dressing and started dressing a little more business like during interviews.

They really started looking more like individuals instead of all going for the "let's shock the hell out of people look". Though I really did like that look too.  :P
