Well... if Orbis would want to be really extreme, it would be necessary not only to cut the finger but also do many other painful things...    Taiji lived through some really "nice" stuff...

That's actually a rumor I've always wondered about.

He mentions one in X no Sei to Shi, where he threw himself in the river but ended up swimming and saving himself.  So that's one, but what was the other?  He had suicidal thoughts during the majority of his homeless period, but (unless I'm forgetting something) I don't remember hearing of a second specific attempt...

Just really curious, since I hear "two suicide attempts!" a lot but never knew what the second one was.

I've read it somewhere - but also nothing specific, just a... statement.

Actually, a co-worker of my dad teaches bass, and he also has one or two fingertips cut off, not sure what happend though...

Is this a bassist thing that's going on or so? ;D

I don't know about cutting fingertips off, but I'm a bass player and I can't move on of my fingers completely because I cut the tendon responsible for making it stretch... I don't know the names of the fingers in english, but it's this one with the metal piece holding it:

I hit myself accidentally with a machette when I was working in the farm... It was not a deep cut, but I managed to hit the tendon and the cartilaginous disk that is located inside the joint... I have no pictures of it, but the cut was exactly on nº 5 of this pic:

Lucky, huh?

Lucky indeed... shit, man, that REALLY sucks!  I see it says 2007 in that photo-- you lost movement in it permanently? :?

Well, at first I couldn't move my finger at all, but after a few months doing all kinds of exercises to recover it I can move it a lot now... I can't extend it completely, and when I close my hand (to punch someone for example) it hurts, and don't 'close' completely... But other than that it's fine... It still does all the important things it should do...  8)

Hmm... I guess you'll have to punch with the other hand then.  Or use brass knuckles.

But seriously, that's cool, glad to hear it's mostly OK now.

@ Babak: How do you explain Tony Iommi then? He lost two fingertips, not one...

@ Hollywood: Since I hurt the left hand and I'm a right-handed my punching is still ok...

From this Taiji blog post: http://taiji.blog.players.tv/article/16235407.html

So either:
A. Taiji isn't really that self-conscious about The Finger.
B. Taiji is very drunk.

Yeah, just wanted an excuse to post this photo somewhere, because it rocks and everyone needs to see his hat.

Oh yeah, I like the moustache too-- looks better when it's thicker though, like how he had it in 1994 or so.  But if he's trying to grow it again, that's cool with me.

And on the topic of this thread: you mean his finger looks like a strange mushroom, right?  Right?

Aww, I don't mean to make fun of it-- I just think that's what it looks like. :P

And frankly I think it's cool that he's apparently comfortable enough with it to use it for flipping the bird and then post the photo on his blog.  No need for him to hide it, it's nothing to be ashamed of after all.

Yeah, with or without his finger tip, Taiji is still great.

Still don't get what's the big deal about a missing part of the finger :P Know enough people who have that problem and still are fine about it - it's nothing big anyway - there are much worse things that could happen. I.E. Taijis accident was much more worse that that finger

As far as I know, Taiji's parents owned a factory and he stuffed his finger in one of the machines when he was only 2.

Taiji claims that "thanks to that accident, I became good at tapping".
