Yes, tapping and sweeping doesn't make anyone a better musician, but a technically better guitarist, which I thought was the matter of discussion here
And the variety of genres doesn't matter of course if the stuff you do isn't good.
I don't know who the two japanese guitarists are so I won't comment on those, but Satriani, Vai and the other virtuosos are definitely better than hide.
But about Pata is also that he doesn't really seem to have a wide range of techniques, just standard guitar playing, I've never seen him sweep, tap or anything out of the ordinary. hide I know at least can do some cool tapping stuff.
And about bursting my bubble, I used to think so myself, but after some studying I started to think otherwise. And this was based on X material. I had some Pata's solo stuff on my comp but I thought it sucked and deleted, so I can't really analyze them. I did however download it again from your link, maybe I'll change my view again after some more studying, who knows ;P
And to add, I am not really one of the hide-fans, so I'm saying this from an objective point of view

Noo way. Kirk is overrated as hell, James is good with ballads and I'd say Iron Maidens guitar heros are kinda on the same level as our hide and Pata. The others are definitely better than hide, and Pata too.
IMO Pata's solos are mostly kinda boring and uncreative, as for hide had some great moments, like Phantom of Guilt, Week End, Dice, Eyes Love You (just listen to that tapping part) etc. He had some talent even tho he is definitely not the best guitarist in the world, not even one of the best. I believe there was a reason why he was the lead guitarist, not Pata (besides the charisma and stage performance(which hide lacked too at times)).
Technically it can't be argued that Pata was better than hide. But he lacked the charisma and crazyness that fans loved in hide, so it's possible to say that from that point of view hide was indeed better... So it's not a question of 'who is better?' but rather 'who is better in a certain aspect?'...

Technically it can't be argued that Pata was better than hide.
Well, I wouldn't be so sure about that. hide sure is sloppier, but Pata had a bad habit of missing some bends too. And as for which ones solos are more challenging to play, it is definitely hide. Just listen to the tapping part of Eyes Love you, compare the solos of Week End, X, Patas solos are all quite simple and you don't have to be so precise with the technique, I think the difference can be heard if you listen to Stab Me In The Back and I'll Kill You solos by Pata and then listen to the hide parts of X and Week End, and why not the Pata parts from there too.
i havent found a better guitarist,thats what i mean
this is my opinion, what can i say?he has totally "inspired" me to start playing the guitar again and i'm not exaggerating.......he is great to me and i dont know someone better.well, not yet;)
Then something must be wrong with me since I oppose comparing of art(ists) so much.
However, sorry I went here anyway, but I had to look since I'm kind of responsible for the posts in this subforum.
I'm outta here.
i really dont like comparing...imo hide is better.*IMO*and i dont say this because i'm obsessed with him,its just that i have never found a better guitar player.i mean his solos....damn....so good....and maybe because hide HAD the chance to prove his talent, since he was the lead guitarist.
What IS the point of comparing? I don't get it, please tell me, cause I'm too curious.
Ok, don't get ME wrong, but I'm so fucking fed up with people comparing those two.
However, I agree with Pata being a great musician AND certainly underrated.
