S.K.I.N. / SKIN formerly know as "The Band"
« on: May 29, 2007, 12:23:25 PM »
I think you missed of the point Unfinished said a Selfish love like acoustic solo as seen here.  In other words having Yoshiki's masterful composition skills blend Sugizo and Miyavi's amazing guitar talents into 1 completely new amazing never before seen song.  No one is suggesting a cover anywhere.

You seem a bit jumpy PN whenever it comes to the subject of Miyavi having any influence over the band.  I think you have to get used to the fact that while Miyavi won't be controlling the band, Yoshiki recruited him for HIS style not to make him do something thats completely different than what he does best.[/url][/u]

Heh I'll just stick to calling him JRock(which is one of the reasons I love the genre it's so diverse it kind of throws out sub-genres cause you can go completely insane trying to label each JRock band with a sub-genre).  And I'll just say I miss Miyavi's heavier stuff on electric guitar.

Anyways back on the subject of SKIN, I'm really hoping that they do 1 of 2 things.  A, each artist gets to do some songs of their own style but of course with some influence from the others so it's not exactly the same as their older stuff, and it ends up being a very diverse band that covers many different genres.  Or B, where they combine all their styles into a new never before seen style of JRock thats completely kick ass and flexible.  Or who knows maybe both.

But if any 1 artist gets too much control I'll be severely disappointed.  Especially Gackt who I'm not really a fan of, and especially not a fan of his influence on Malice Mizer.  Trying to learn to like him though since he is really talented, but he's not really my style.

Always had trouble with classifying JRock into sub-genres because bands musical styles are so different from other countries music.  Anyways even though Miyavi's old stuff was really heavy, I usually hear from my friends that the defining line between Rock and Metal isn't how heavy it is but the song structure.  I don't know enough music theory to tell the difference 100%, but I can usually get an idea for the general sound of the song.  Miyavi's stuff never sounded like metal to me even though it was just as heavy, and I hear him referred to as punk rock a lot.  Just like how Dir En Grey is really hardcore but still considered rock due to the structure, while less hardcore bands like X Japan and Sex Machineguns are metal.

Maybe I'm just spouting nonsense though, I dunno.  I plan to take some music theory courses in college and maybe then I'll understand how it all works.

Well Miyavi's influence is gonna be in the group whether you like it or not, especially if it's handled like X Japan and everyones gonna write some songs.  But you'll probably get your way about the punk rock thing since thats old Miyavi, and he doesn't seem like the type of person to go back to his old style, but rather keep moving ahead to newer crazier things.

By the way does anyone know if Yoshiki can still drum as good as he could in his X Japan days, or is he gonna slow it down a bit for the new band?

Offtopic / Shocking Moment Of The Day
« on: May 29, 2007, 01:28:00 AM »
A few days late but I haven't had access to a computer.  My biggest shock was Miyavi's crazy hodge-podge or musical talent, especially when Sugizo came out to play with him, which was amazing.  The fact he was in the band was not a surprise.

And I think he'll be a good 4th member, even if his musical background isn't the same I still think he fits and isn't just catering to the kids.  It looks to me like they want to do something new and different with music and Miyavi is one of the most creative musicians out there, experimenting with lots of different styles.  And you can't deny he's really good with a guitar too.  After seeing him rocking out with Sugizo I can't wait to see what happens when Yoshiki and Gackt come in.

If Sugizo and Miyavi's preformance was anything to go by, this band will be anything but normal.  I think we'll see lots of guest musicians, and I'm pretty sure Miyavi will be on acoustic guitar for the most part like he was at the JRock Revolution.  I kind of miss electric guitar miyavi though, and hope he does a little bit of his old punk rock style again, even if it's just for 1 song or so.

Other Bands / I'm Back From the JROCK Revolution Festival

Travelled there all the way from New Jersey and WOW was it worth it.  Absolutely amazing show I almost don't know where to begin expect to say all the bands were amazing.  I've got lots of pictures but most of them are crappy quality cause of how far back my seat was, but I'll post some later if any are salvagable.  For now I'll describe Miyavi's preformance since it pertains most to X Japan, if you guys wanna know any other details just ask.

Okay, so Miyavi comes on stage but he's not with his band, but rather with some hip-hop preformers instead, and he has his accoustic guitar.  Theres a beat boxer, a tap dancer(street/ghetto style tap, don't know the official term for it, but he had a wooden platform and a mic by his feet), turn tablist(?), bassist, a drummer, and oddly enough a painter.

He did remixed versions of Selfish Love, Rock and Roll is Not Dead, and 1 other song I couldn't identify.  He also gave everyone except the drummer a chance to preform a solo, and they were all really talented, (even the painter got a solo).

Then he made the announcement about his new band with Yoshiki, Sugizo, and Gackt.  Then Sugizo came on stage and joined the strange band and was completely amazing.  Him and Miyavi played back to back and it was honestly the most amazing preformance I've ever seen in my life.  Then as if it could get any better the Miyavi Symbol in the back of the stage lifted and a platform was rolled in with a Drummer who had an Odaiko, and 4 smaller taikos for his drum set.  They then did an encore of Are You Ready To Rock? With the new drums.  Some of the beast music I've ever heard, it was amazing.  Miyavi also succeeded in being the only artist the whole night that could get the fans to sing a long(since Are You Ready To Rock? is in english).

After that outstand preformance, the band left except Miyavi and Sugizo and then Yoshiki came on stage and stood with them.  Yoshiki said the Gackt couldn't make it but he says "Hi", and then announced that they'd be preforming at the Anime Expo.  Miyavi and Sugizo left the stage and Yoshiki thanked all the fans from coming and asked where everyone was from.  It was a very emotional and touching moment.  I HAD SO MUCH FUN!!!

« on: May 16, 2007, 12:05:46 AM »
Meh most people don't listen to pop music because the people are "talented" they listen to it because it's catchy and they can sing along or dance to it.  Not everyone listens to music for the same reasons, what you like is what you like.

I never claimed Visual Kei was a genre.  Nor did I say all JRock fans would like him simply due to his style of dress.  My only intention was to try and counter the statement that JRock fans would probably not be into him.  Visual Kei is a big part of lots of JRock, and it's obvious that fans like that about the bands a lot.  MM has a similar look to the bands that dress in a Visual Kei style.  I was just following the logic that because they have something in common there would be a greater chance of JRock fans liking MM as opposed to some other completely random musician who has nothing in common with JRock bands rather than 1 thing in common like MM.

I'm sorry for not outlining all my points more specifically in the original post.  In the future I'll be sure to make my generalizations more specific so that people don't get confused and make the assumption that I'm stating a bunch of facts about people's personal preferences .

This one is really random, but during spirit night at my high school one of the songs was the inspector gadget techno remix(not sure who it's by) but I noticed it doesn't use the inspector gadget song, but rather In the Hall of the Mountain King

TV / Movies / Anime / Spiderman 3
« on: May 07, 2007, 03:34:20 AM »
It wasn't that story was sacrificed in Matrix 2, 3, and spiderman it's just that it was too overdone.  They try to top previous movies in all areas which works for action, but when you try to outdo your old story it usually ends up being extra cheesy(spiderman), and pumped full of too many philosophical messages(matrix).

I was pretty love hate about this movie.  Parts I loved was Emo Pete dancing to jazz music, because it just didn't fit at all and thats exactly how the director wanted you to feel.  There were a few camera angles that were just wth were they thinking.  And pete's actions pre-venom seemed to be completely mindless and self-destructive just so they could force him into a corner.  I thought they could have done things a lot better, like the kiss with Gwen be an attempt by Pete to get the job promotion (not that a kiss is bad just doesn't seem super-hero like to me).  I actually thought that was the direction they were going in but Pete would've tried to explain it to MJ (Being selfish and thinking she would understand if it helped his career).

So overall not groundbreaking, but better than some of the other crap shoved out there.

For me it was pretty catchy at first, but felt like it got kind of repetitive after a while.   I would think Jrockers would be into him though if they like Visual Kei cause he does dress similarly.

Heh, I actually checked their message board for how to pronounce their name.  Apparently a lot of their fans just call them Shan-Ling because thats what they're known as in Taiwan.  But someone said they pronounce it as just thonic in english.

Edit: also I should probably mention, if you don't like rough vocals then this band is not for you.

On the topic of Yoshiki's piano solo.  The first time I listened to it I thought it was a shit stain on a masterpiece.  I went back and listened to it again when I was in a depressed mood and it really touched me emotionally, and from then on I've loved it.  I can't give you a reason why it's good but it just speaks to me emotionally in a much more profound way than I could ever do banging on a keyboard.  I remember when I gave it to a friend to listen to she said "He's just banging on the keys, but it's so pretty! what the fuck?"  I wouldn't expect everyone to enjoy it, but it seems it just has an impact on certain people.

I think I read on some fan site the sugizo was quoted on saying it would be "explosive rock music".  Even if thats wrong, I doubt it will be pop stuff.  Honestly I hope they're nothing like X Japan.  I love X Japan to death, but I'd rather have this band come up with a new, never done before style, than simply turning out more stuff like what X Japan already did.

Edit: Also I'm pretty sure I'll be going to the JRock Revolution Festival where they're announcing the 4th member.

Anyone else gonna be there?

Didn't know he knew the guys so well, but hey, you're the expert

Hmm, kind of destroys my plan...then I go for Mana  Only for the fact that there's a connection to Gackt and he seems to be quite talented with numerous classical instruments.

*hides very well from the big cat*

From my understanding, Mana is wayyyyy to big a control freak to every join someone else's band.   Would be interesting though.

I guess that makes sense.  Since all the members of X wrote at least one song, it probably means Yoshiki will give the others a chance to express their creativity so there won't be as much fighting.

Myspace isn't very well built to prevent messing with it.  My friend and I figured out that it doesn't resize images if it would warp them so we made fake accounts with 1 x 30,000 pixel images and joined the we love squirrels group to mess it up.
