"I didn’t want We Are X to be a horror film,” says Yoshiki, who has been a Los Angeles resident for 20 years. “I didn’t even want to make this film. It’s very hard for me to go over sad memories. I said yes because people surrounding me convinced me it would help others and give them the courage to move on and move forward. I thought that was a great reason. I want to give people hope. Whoever watches this film, I want them to feel positive, at least toward the end.”

“Making the film was actually very, very hard. To remember those sad moments, especially how I lost my father, or how our band lost our guitar player … you don’t want to open that box, those memories in that box. I shut that door for a long time,” Yoshiki tells us over the phone. “Because of this film, I had to open it, and it was hard to do that. But at the same time, it was therapeutic.”

Yoshiki talks about his reasons for revisiting X Japan's sometimes painful past for the new documentary "We Are X", opening Friday Oct. 21 in L.A.

Yoshiki also
