Has anyone on these boards seen it?
I was thinking of buying the Blu Ray however after finding out there are no English subs I'm questioning my decision.
Is it still enjoyable? Is it easy to grasp what's going on?

I've seen it. I don't really speak Japanese, but I know some common phrases (and song lyrics ::) ). It's VERY difficult to understand what people are saying in the interviews, I only got the general idea of what they were talking about. I'm really glad that I watched it, but it's not something that I'd recommend, if you don't speak any Japanese. It would be much more enjoyable if it was subtitled in English.

I'm having Junk Story on BR with bonus dvd. The DVD is region encoded, which the bluray is not.
To answer your question: I can't speak japanese nor english very well, but I still recommend this documentary. There are also interviews with PATA and other members and companion from hide. Even if you don't understand everything, it still shows you an intersting look inside the world of hideto.
(May be there are fanmade subtitles on http://www.opensubtitles.org, but I haven't looked for it)

Hide : There was a place called Dobuita Street where a lot of US soldiers came. I was there almost everyday. I learned all about alcohol, tobacco, and women over there. Back in the days, all the stores on the street were playing rock music. I got interested and went in the store like this. Even if I was scared, I kept going there. And then, I made friends over there and made a band.
narrator : Hide's first band "Saver Tiger". He played the guitar in the band and entered the musician's path. On December 13, 1964, Hide was born. The Home town is Yokosuka. The real name is Hideto Matsumoto. Hide's brother and the personal manager Hiroshi Matsumoto. Currently, he is the representative of "Headwax Organization", which is founded by Hide.
Hiroshi : My three year older brother... to him, his stuff was his stuff, and my stuff was also his stuff. Even if we buy the same things, he said, "Your thing can be broken, my thing is very precious". He painted his own kit ((I don't know the equivalent word in English. Higaki Takaya (classmate) : He used to sing anime theme songs. Hide's favorites were "Mazinger Z", "Devilman", and rock version of "Sazae-san". When the song to perform was decided, he laughed and played.
Hiroshi : He found that his guitar sound was different from the sound coming from the TV. Then he said, "Why is this different?"
Hide : I didn't have an effector, so there was no change in the sound. But I believed that the sound would be different if my guitar skills improved.
Hiroshi : I opened the door of his room and saw what he was doing. Hide ripped the back of the guitar, and was applying glue on it. I asked him if the guitar was broken. He replied that the sound didn't change. I said "It looks to be broken. Is it Okay?", then he said "Get out of here".
Hide : One day, it was noisy so I was wearing headphones. I threw the headphones out and left the room, then, I heard some sound. I went back to my room to see if I turned off the recorder, and I found it sounded from the headphones. At that moment, I thought "This is it! Everyone did it this way, even Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore and Ace Frehley are doing it this way!" After that, I played the guitar by raising the volume wearing headphones. From then on, I didn't even touch the amplifier, and just broke six or more headphones. (laugh)
narrator : Learning guitar became an opportunity to meet rock music.
Hide : One day in junior high school, my friend let me listen to KISS's music in his house. But I didn't like KISS's makeup. Thus, I borrowed the tape, but I just put it away. Then I had nothing to do, so I listened to that tape. After listening to it, I was shocked, "What's this?" It was the first time I was hit by a thunderstorm of music. I started thinking that I was born for rock. From then on, my Rock'n'Roll life started.

Oh wow. I think I feel sick. It's like there were two of him. The one people saw on the outside and a different one on the inside. Almost like a multiple personality. Schizophrenic. But we will never know. The butterflies - a symbol of transformation. Did he do that on purpose and did he know or was it some kind of intuition or not? *freaking out, here*. :(

Tetsu : Hide called me and said that he joined X. I told him “Good for you”.
Kyo : I guess the reason why Hide called Tetsu. Hide knew that Tetsu didn’t want him to quit the music. That’s probably why Hide called. Hide said that even if Saver Tiger had disappeared, the members would spread like embers. He told me, “Tetsu, who put a soul in music is about to form a new band. You are going to pursue a splendid rock’n’roll. And I will take the things that I wanted to show in Saver Tiger to X. Then Hide suddenly stood up to yell, “Am I an idiot?” and hit me. Later, he called me and said he was sorry. He said he couldn’t sleep at all and apologized about his behavior. I said it was okay because it happened while we were drinking and then told him “Let’s drink together again later”. Then he said “Thank you” and hung up the phone. After a while, he told me about his solo album and said “I’ll tour later so I want you to join me”.
D.I.E (hide with Spread Beaver / keyboard) : I was an unknown keyboardist at the time. I was so excited to meet the member of X. Hide was waiting for me with his sunglasses on. I had a heartbeat. I still remember the heartbeat at that time. I felt like I was going to see the count of Monte Cristo. I first met him with such tension and excitement.
Hide : [♪Eyes Love You] My eyes love you, trapped in tears.
CHIROLYN (hide with Spread Beaver / bass) : Hide’s first impression was... I felt like I saw the bareface of Kabuki actress. His skin was very good. Hide liked Hideyuki.** One day, he was seeing Hideyuki on TV. I was playing behind him then. He said he’s wanted to be together since he saw me on TV. I first met Hide and heard “Yoroshiku”. Just a handshake with him settled everything. Normally, they ask me to play. But Hide shook hands and said “Yoshoshiku”. (I don't know how to translate it in English. Yoroshiku is a Japanese greeting. It means ”Please be nice to me”... odd if it is directly translated in English. Anyway, it implies that Hide wanted to be with CHIROLYN from the day on)
narrator : The fateful encounter with I.N.A who had been the manipulator of X. Hide moved I.N.A from the backstage to onstage. Hide and I.N.A had a lot in common about music. So all the songs were made by Hide and I.N.A in collaboration. “The musician Hide is produced by Hideto Matsumoto and INA”. Hide’s solo activity was spurred through the collaboration.

I mean, from that he seems like a person, who swallowed all of his problems, all of his frustrations, and alcohol made it come out like that. He was a person, who cared about his friends, but he didn't let them get too close to him. You know, I went to Berlin in October to the We are X premier, and Q&A with Yoshiki, and I had the chance to ask him a question. We could ask only one, but now, I would have another question to him. If hide and he were best friends, did he also feel like he can't get to know him completely, did he also feel this kind of 'mistery' around him? Or he was able to break this wall? Did he know the real hide? I'm sure he wouldn't answer this question, but after reading this, I have this thought in my mind...

Yoshiki and Toshi are best friends and he didn't even know about his brainwashing going on. Or that Toshi felt incompetent as a singer. I doubt Yoshiki and hide talked much about serious stuff, either. My guess is they only talked music.

I've been wondering a lot about Yoshiki's and hide's real personalities...
Frankly speaking, I think there are public and private ones, none of them can (or could) really tell everything to fans. There are too private things you have to keep for yourself, especially when you are a sovraexposed rockstar (of course they chose to be famous...).
Yoshiki defined hide "a very self-contained person", which describes only the 'sober' aspect of hide's personality...
I can't consider the conversation with Toshi in We are X more than a mere repeat of the one they - probably - had when they seriously considered reuniting the band.
We are X is a great documentary (to me it means much more than a mere film) and I think it's really honest, but it had to be a well studied product also...
Art in general and particularly music allude and makes you travel... it summons entire worlds within us... X Japan can do it even more powerfully because of the real passion they lavished into it, it was born and continues to live in a certain way also because they transmit the feeeling that there is something which is worthwhile to die for, something you can't touch and it's not money. Under this point of view I think the band is very japanese and fans expect much more from them than from other musicians... so - for example - when Yoshiki twitts he "flew across the sea to see" his little maltese Melody, some fans become aggressive (he told this recently in a russian interview) because the gap beetwen the powerful, talented and rich rockstar and the ordinary fan make them fear they can deceive us... that the message is not honest nor true... that they manipulate us (which - obviously - they do, but not in this exclusively negative sense) but if they wanted only to make money they could have well chose to become manager of some fashion product... and keep their spinal discs sound and safe... Probably the truth is much more complex than they can publicly explain and they are certainly not perfect (for no reward I would have accepted to be a receptionist of the hotel they were sleeping in after a gig during the first 90s...)
Anyway I'm so grateful to them... they had the power to move my deep inner simbolic life like no other musician could do... ok, this is a love letter and you're fed up... sooorryyy ::) ;D

Absolutely. His fashion is not outdated in 2018, and will not be in the future. Yoshiki's photobook is completely different, and I think it's also beautiful and full of personality. I'm sad that there is no photoalbum of Taiji. I think he was soooo handsome and had a nice body when he was young. I like his body... very slim and muscular at the same time. He was fashionable as well. I've heard that early X's fashion and hairstyles were largely directed by Taiji. I miss him so much.
I would have another question to him. If hide and he were best friends, did he also feel like he can't get to know him completely, did he also feel this kind of 'mistery' around him? Or he was able to break this wall? Did he know the real hide? I'm sure he wouldn't answer this question, but after reading this, I have this thought in my mind...
That's a really interesting question. We know that he will avoid the answer. Actually he was asked the same question in "We Are X". The director asked, "What kind of person is Toshl?", and Yoshiki replied, "I don't know, Ask the same question to Toshl. He will answer the same way." I don't know how much Yoshiki and Hide was close. But I assume that Yoshiki has been strongly influenced by Hide, until now. I think "We Are X" was made because of "Junk Story". It's just my delusion, but... possibly.

I understand what you say, completely. And I agree. But it's still so shocking, because he claimed it was an accident from the very beginning, he stayed true to his opinion to -as you said - protect hide, protect the fans, and in my opinion to protect himself too... Because it's so much easier to think, it was an accident, and easier to accept. If he really said this, that means he was able to believe the idea, that he committed suicide, which is a huge progress for him. I don't know... I'm just a bit confused.

Yes after he wrote the book in 2014, he became publically open about it. But we are talking 2007-2010 X reunion, when he and Yoshiki didn't even talk about these things at all. We Are X director Kijak mentions this in an interview, that the scene where Toshi talks about his brainwashing with Yoshiki sitting at the piano -- that was actually the first time they talked about it! 2014!

Unpopular opinion: I think it's pretty obvious that Hide's death was a suicide. And it's safe to say Yoshiki probably thinks so too, but imagine the implications of being frank about it in public. His whole message in recent years is all about X Japan and himself being the by-product of mean external factors and unfortunate accidents. That's probably his way of spreading a positive, marketable message. In truth, stuff is not that simple. Take away the flavoring and the sweeteners, the story of X is not that of a bunch of defenseless victims who occasionally fell victim to malicious cult members, vicious spine hernias and homicidal doorknobs. I guess it's more like the story of a bunch of regular people who did a really cool thing at the right place, at the right time, and who thus got catapulted into a superstar status thet manifestly weren't ready for (if anyone ever is). Each then met a breaking point that was more or less fortunate - and for Hide it was extremely unfortunate.
We knew very little about all of this 10 or 15 years ago, but the whole documentary/biography/tribute song/Q&A frenzy in recent years has helped sharpen the picture/ Yoshiki has also dropped the veil on what his relationship with the rest of his band was like. He was imposing, dominating, didn't sound like he listened to the others much and had unrealistically high expectations (think of the whole overseas breakthrough craze in the early 90s). On the other hand, he expected others to be accepting when it came to his own fragility and health limitations. The other guys retorted by pushing him into a full leadership position and kind of stopped caring. Toshi's cult-joining fiasco was the last straw, but it was rather unavoidable. As for Hide, he had been dropping one red flag after another since the late 80s, with his alcoholism, apparent eating disorders, body image issues, violent outbursts, painful perfectionism, ambiguous statements in interviews and whatnot. He wasn't in a position where he could be open about it (plus he was the peak of his career and people looked up to him like a god), so his personality became more and more double-sided. Add in some alcohol and you get a ticking time bomb. But I do think Yoshiki & Co. did the right thing by not being overly open about it and adopting the 'accident' theory' - shedding too much light on it would give the while situation a sense of inevitability. Kind of like saying 'see guys? life can really be unbearable and even your dear, invincible idol fell prey to it'.

In the We Are X film, Yoshiki said that he uses the same method of using a towel and door knob to relieve stress in his neck, too. He made it sound like that was something many people did or at the very least, he and hide did. So that sounded correct to say no, he did not do it on purpose. And, really, people don't commit suicide sitting on the floor with a door nob a few feet from their head, do they? That seems off the wall or unbelievable to me.
As wild and crazy were hide's thoughts, he also seemed to be very down to earth and very determined to reach his goals with his music and was doing just that, exactly. He was putting on so many big concerts with so much merchandise and recordings. He was living the dream he wanted.

Oh matsumoto, your post came through before mine. We must have been writing at the same time. I fear you could be right. I don't want to believe it but as you say, the signs were all there.
I agree about the way Yoshiki responds, too. I always notice there is some slight hesitation before he responds or hesitation in between words, maybe.
Then there is Hiroshi. Hiroshi never did say yes or no, did he? I believe the only thing he has said that I can think of is that he couldn't or didn't want to talk about it. If it wasn't true, he would come right out and say so, I think. I am pretty sure that is what he would do.

If you are in an alchool intoxication and hang yourself to the doorknob - even if it's just to stretch you neck - you are absolutely aware that you could fall in an alchol-induced-coma and not be able to breathe any more... perhaps you are not meant to take off your life intentionally... but you also are not doing anything to avoid it practically...
But this doesn't anyhow belittle his personality to my eyes... precisely because he was not - like Yoshiki is not - a regular guy... the way he was burnt by his own fire doesn't explain nor estinguish the fire itself...

Well, we can only speculate, really. I agree that committing suicide by hanging yourself on a doorknob is a pretty dumb way to do it, but hey, I've seen people do dumber things (including a guy who hanged himself on a coat rack that was barely 5 feet off the floor - he just hooked his belt to it and around his neck, managed to hang himself by bending his knees and breaking his neck with his body weight). It's also not uncommon for suicidal individuals to 'practice' for the real thing before they actually take the leap and do it for good: slitting one's wrists horizontally, taking *not quite enough* sleeping pills, seeing how far they can lean into the void without falling, tying a hangman's knot to see what it feels like around their neck, etc, etc. My best guess is that he was too drunk to fully understand how tragic the outcome could be, but drunk enough to get over the fear and take the leap. The awkward modus operandi could very well be the result of that: a semi-serious attempt that worked out unexpectedly well.
But again, that's just guessing.

They didn't come from rich/powerful/influent families and were barely in their early 20s when they were already selling out the Tokyo Dome. One second you're in your room hanging up posters of Gene Simmons and begging your mum for a guitar, the next you're so famous you can't go out without being smothered by a kazillion fans who dress like you, act like you, talk like you and proudly declare that you're their reason to live. 8) Under pressure, much!

Definitely true, but there's two unanswered questions here that bug me.
One, who the hell decides to do a complicated yoga stretching thing that involves towels and doorknobs when drunk off their ass? A drunk dude with a sore back is a lot more likely to crash in his bed and call it a day and/or pop a painkiller. Not sure what about you, but when I'm drunk, just the thought of taking my shoes off is enough to make me think it's a good idea to sleep with them on.
Two, his brother insists he wasn't that drunk. At least, he was able to walk without stumbling, sticking a key in a door, changing from day clothes into night clothes, deciding that his back hurt enough to do a stretching thing, tying a towel in a funny knot, etc.
This is a case for Inspector Gadget, y'all, let the conspiracy theories begin. 8)

A person who usually gets drunk knows perfectly he's throwing himself in such a situation where he could be absolutely not aware that his action can be possibly dangerous... he knows the risks implied in being completely drunk... he knows he can do dangerous things... During an interview not much time before dying hide himself told he used to drive completely drunk and broke his bones more than once... he knew he was absolutely reckelss... didn't do much to avoid it...

We Are X was shot from 2014 to 2015. The scene of Yoshiki's visiting his school was shot in summer of 2015. That's after the "Junk Story" was released.
There is a planning stage in the film production. It is unlikely that Yoshiki would have not known about "Junk Story" at the planning stage. Yoshiki directly appeared in the movie and would have been contacted before appearing.
"We Are X" was made under the influence of "Junk Story" => It's my delusion.

Jumping in here with a few other things. According to a writer who wrote about hide's death, he says Hiroshi told that hide acted "strange" when he brought him home the night he died. Then hide asked Hiroshi "What do you think?" and Hiroshi responded, "What do you mean?" to which hide responded, "Not you, too Hiroshi!" Hiroshi must have sat there for a while outside, because the writer claims Hiroshi said he could hear things being kicked and that hide was angry.
If I am not mistaken, in Hiroshi's book, he mentioned that hide's band mates had been "harassing??" hide and told him that he couldn't get anywhere without Yoshiki or he was no one without Yoshiki - something to that effect. That was before Hiroshi brought hide home so I am wondering, was that what hide was thinking about when he asked Hiroshi, what he thought?

To me it seems like hide must have been a difficult person to work with and live with. The more I read these translations, the more it seems to me that had I known him I would have probably not liked his personality. Projecting so much anger, being drunk most of the time, and doing violent things. I wonder if his god-like status came because he died. And because most contemporary fans got to know him after his death. I wonder if he would be such a divisive personality as Yoshiki is now, half of the fandom hating him, and half of the fandom loving him. He looks like someone who had high standards in the studio, just like Yoshiki. Maybe that's why they got along so well. And it makes me appreciate the other members even more, because boy, being around and working with two perfectionalists must have been hell to endure during practice and studio sessions.

In 2 places, today, I have read that hide was bipolar. Both places the words were written by Hiroshi. I don't know why he would be dishonest about that. But if it's true, whrew! That seems to fit his behaviors. Over-extravagant, taking wild chances, doing dangerous things, going out of control, fighting, going into rages and tearing up the place (wherever he was at the time) then becoming depressed. Fits to a T ! :'(

I doubt he was ever diagnosed so I would be careful with such assumptions, even if his brother is assuming that. Psychiatry/psychology is not really something that is viewed favorably in Japanese society, especially not in the 80s and 90s. I highly doubt hide ever went to a psychologist and got diagnosed with anything. And as a layperson, it is dangerous to "diagnose" others based on symptoms.

yes it fits... I couldn't believe it when at first I knew Yoshiki was surprised by hide's death... even Sugizo in the film says "he was running toward death"...
Despite Yoshiki's outbursts and constant depressive situation of those times, I think hide was probably the most vulnerable guy...
In the film he said he joined X Japan not so much because he was interested in their music, but more because he was psyched by the experience with Yoshiki and that for him X Japan was not a conceipt depending on band's duration...
This could mean that while Yoshiki put up a band to express himself and to play his music (which was somehow a "sane" thing despite his violent mood swings), hide was doing something not only because he wanted to play (which he wanted a lot) but for reasons regarding relationships, which probably made him less strong... even if he was doing very good music also by himself...

We sure can't diagnose a guy we never met, who died 20 years ago and who lived a world away... plus, over the internet. 8) Diagnosing bipolar is difficult, even when the patient is right in front of you. He sounds like he could very much have it, but bipolar is comorbid with plenty of other things - we would need to know not only what he was like, but also what he wasn't like IRL. And what he had to say about it himself, which we'll never know. It's safe to say he sure was a bit messed up in the head, though, the poor thing.

Yup, would probably have punched that crazy-haired brat in the face if we'd crossed paths. :P Agree with you, most fans who claim to love the guy (or any other idol per se) mostly only know and love a very specific side of them - and a good part of it is a projection of what we wish people were like. Moreover, I don't think Yoshiki was in a relaxing situation. What he said in the interview is what he had said so many times before. Sometimes we can see Yoshiki is relaxed especially when he is with his close friends and when he speaks in Japanese. That situation doesn't seem to be the case. Even if he pronounced "the best player" it would be the mistake. He often makes mistakes even when he speaks in Japanese, which may be his most proficient language. In this situation, there may have been confusion because he just mentioned his father's suicide. But this is just my opinion.
He has claimed that Hide's death was an accident right after Hide's death. I don't think he claimed hide's death was an accident in preparation for his business 20 years from then.

It's taken right after Hide's funeral. Yoshiki says that Hide and he used to talk over three hours on the phone about music, family, women and everything. He says Hide's family and his family were close and they all traveled together to Hawaii while hide was alive. Yoshiki says that Hide's parents are so sweet. They suggested Yoshiki to stay close like family and go for drinks together in the future even though Hide's passed away. This radio show has changed the way I used to think about them.
I think it's very dangerous to assume that hide had mental problems and killed himself because he drank and fought a lot.
In my country, there is a boy band called Shinhwa. They made their debut in 1998 and still working without replacement of members or disbandment. They are the longest-lasting boy band. They are often asked "What's the secret to being so long?" Then they always answer, "We fought a lot when we were young. We tell each other if we have complaints"
If a person who didn't fight, didn't drink and kept the rules and the order committed suicide, people will say that's why he killed himself. Once, someone told me that "A person who doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, doesn't drink coffee is a psychopath". I asked why. And then she said, "Because Hitler was such a man". What? How silly! It's very silly to judge people with such superficiality, isn't it?

You're right. It's weird chronologically, if the sentence was "...but at that same time we lost our bass player took his own life and the vocalist got brainwashed...". Because Taiji was fired long before the disbandment and died many years later and Hide's death was a way more critical accident in the band's history.
However, in the interview, Yoshiki explained about harakiri during the Second World War which is the tradition of samurai. If the theme of the Russian interview was "Yoshiki is against suicide", I think he might have mentioned Taiji's death. I'm not sure.

Yeah, probably thats why Yoshiki says he believes it was an accident.
hide had its issues. I don't even think he had mental issues, but he talks about being bullied for being fat when he was a kid, he was really dedicated to his first band but members keep going in and out... He looked even more perfeccionist than Yoshiki.
Everything I read so far keeps the idea of hide just having a bad day and drinking too much, he hadn't the intention of suicide.

I.N.A : Speaking of his double-sidedness, he had an impromptu part and a theoretical part. For example, there was a time when we heard different sounds due to computer data problems. When he heard that, he said, “What’s this? It’s stunning!” And he asked me to analyze the reason why it sounds cool. After this process of analysis, we can have our new techniques available for later use. Along with this theoretical part, he put emphasis on the attitude of “If it sounds good when I listen to it, then I value it as good” (This is hard to translate. I’m sure it means that “Hide instinctively accepted the music as it was regardless of the theory” It’s simple in Japanese, but I don’t know how to write it in English without any further explanation like this. ㅠㅠㅠ) Ability to absorb various things into himself was really awesome.

Joe (hide with Spread Beaver) : He has been a person who kept on amazing and entertaining people since he released his first album. But he became different when he released his second album. It was not hide who put band X in the background. Because he established the style of solo singer Hide, the breadth of his music has expanded. He was free from the constraints of his hands and feet.

But I can understand the meaning from the kanji and I think “expressionist” is the most equivalent word for it. I’ve translated this word “creator” so far. But I’ll change the word for it from now on)) He was not a mere player, but he was the person who enjoyed creating and expressing himself. He would have enjoyed the solo activity for sure.
?? : Unexpectedly, he went onstage without the guitar. I was very surprised.
D.I.E (hide with Spread Beaver) : He had a very objective point of view. He objectively analyzed the activities of his 1st album and planned the 2nd album activity to be without the guitar. It is surprising that he has abandoned the guitar even though he was originally a guitarist. He was not tied to being a guitarist. At that point, he was already an artist.
Kiyoshi (hide with Spread Beaver) : He rehearsed again and again and began to think that it would be okay to do without guitar.

I.N.A : For him, that was also a way of expressing himself, rather than he thought “I became a vocalist”.
PATA : The fact that he heightened the key of the songs is the proof that he fell into singing. I’d not thought he was poor at singing until then, but at that time I thought “He became a vocalist” for the first time.
I.N.A : When he was a member of X, he was allowed to be a strange guitarist in the band. But when he was soloing, he had to fascinate people himself. At that time, he found something completely new inside. He found the answer on the way, rather than he had the answer from the start.

Thanks, lakeisle! I really got into that one. Hide was so "deep" as we say, here. Not superficial in any way. And very, very talented, even though I am sure that was not what he intended when he would just DO things his way or things came to him to just do something. Not planned in other words. It came from his heart and the deep recesses of his soul. He was absolutely brilliant and may not have even realized it. I am in awe.

Right? When I first discovered the band, I didn't understand why he was so much idolized. But as I learn more and more about him, I get more and more fascinated with him. He may not be the best guitarist of all time or a flawless saint, but he is so brilliant and lovely. I can see how much he's loved by his colleagues.

You're right. Hide was so deep and not superficial. I think we can grasp only fragmentary aspect of him though. His colleagues say they couldn't understand the whole world of hide, and had to keep distance from him, but I don't think that means hide was hypocritical or closed or something(I do not know the proper word). He is a type of person who causes people to be curious about him. Probably he didn't intend it but as a result, he was. I think the trait of him makes people feel that they don't understand him well.

Hide : I can’t even compare, basically. There was a boss called Yoshiki in the band X. So when I was in X, I freely played guitar depending on the attraction of Yoshiki. I was very pleased with the title of a “weird guitarist”. But now things are totally different. Because I have to care everything and have to do a lot of different things. We used to share all the achievements in X, so one-fifth of the power was assigned to me. But now, I have to exert my power 100%. When I get tired, I get tired 100%. When I lose, I lose 100%. When I win, I win 100%.

INA : The base of the album “Psyborg Rock” existed in the 2nd album “PSYENCE” already.
narrator : After disassembling each note played by a person, they reassembled it and stacked it up in several layers. Then they mixed their computer-generated music with this. Psyborg rock meant that the tone of human and machine were fused together. The style created with I.N.A.
Hide : Formally I was soloing when I belonged to X. I was a solo singer without a band. Since I didn’t have members, I became dependent on the machine. The way I envisioned is that when I sing and play the guitar, the computer aids. We proceeded in that way and eventually reached here.
I.N.A : We already used that method a lot when we worked on the first album. We sampled the phrases of the guitar. Pressing each keyboard key causes each guitar’s phrase to sound. We made songs by playing this keyboard. We’ve been experimenting with such a variety of things.
Hide : It’ll not change much. Rock music will continue to be played through human groups and machine groups. According to the genre classification in Japan, it’s called “Visual Rock”, but visual rock doesn’t mean music. So I wanted to declare it a “Psyborg Rock”. It’s still questionable whether this is music. I’m making noise that it will be fun if this becomes trend.
Eric Westfall (Recording Engineer) : (in Japanese. He speaks fluent Japanese) Hide has an international mindset that is not limited to Japan. He is working in Japan because he is a Japanese. But I think he will be successful enough to release albums here. When I let my colleagues listen to his music, they were all surprised a lot.
Hide : Overall, it’s not much different from the previous two albums. I think I achieved some of the goals I wanted to achieve in this album. I think this album will strongly show the fusion of my aspiration as a singer and the rock music I wanted to do.

lakeisle you are doing a really great job!! ;) Every time I read a new translation of this film it's like watching him living his life at that time... I'll read and re-read it again, it's full of suggestions.
Hide was certainly endlessly changing, conveying his multiple talents in his (last) new album...
and yet I cant't help noticing that in the last videos his face was somehow 'cloudy' and his smile was not the same; OK, perhaps he wore braces ;D, or simply his stage character was evolving, but I'd rather think something had happened... probably X Japan's disbanding (and who knows what else) hit him really deep inside.
As a guitarist he was good, yet not the very best of the world... he had so many personal issues and yet his music and his looks were always vital, really beyond time and problems... his lyrics so disenchanted and provocative, but very far from gloomy atmospheres.
Wouldn't surprise me if somewhere he was happy to know his art keeps delighting fans so much till now.

Hiroshi : I was about to complete the album “Ja, Zoo” on my responsibility. I can’t make music, so I asked I.N.A to complete the album in order to deliver it to people. Hiroshi : It was a “Ja, Zoo” tour without hide, so I had to ask a lot of things to I.N.A. But I.N.A said he couldn’t do everything because he was not hide.

I really struggled to translate it. (Especially the lyrics of hide songs :'( :'() I know My English sentences are very clumsy, but hope the rough contents are delivered. I will collect the pieces of translations I've posted so far and edit them to make one. Since it is 120 minutes in total, I'm going to mark the time in 15-minute unit. hide's death is a real mystery. I'm relatively new to X Japan and didn't pay much attention to the cause of hide't death until recently. I loosely believed that he died in an accident while he was treating himself because his family and Yoshiki claim so as well as his fans.
But recently I happened to read the police's position. The police reacted to the claim of "traction treatment".
- The towel around hide's neck was torn in half,
- The noose was too small to be judged for traction treatment,
- There were books on suicide in his place.
And I read these on Japanese and Korean communities. It's very reliable.
- Hide fought with a member of Spread Beaver and was in a very bad mood before he died.

Hide : There was a place called Dobuita Street where many US soldiers came. I went there almost everyday. I learned all about alcohol, tobacco, and women over there. Back in the day, all the stores on the street were playing rock music. I got interested and went into the store like this. Even though I was scared, I kept going there. And then, I made friends in there and formed a band.
narrator : Hide's first band "Saver Tiger". He played the guitar in the band and entered the musician's path. On December 13, 1964, hide was born. The Home town is Yokosuka, the real name is Hideto Matsumoto. Hide's brother and the personal manager Hiroshi Matsumoto. He is currently the representative of "Headwax Organization", which is founded by Hide.
Hiroshi : My three year older brother hide, to him, his stuff was his stuff, and my stuff was also his stuff. Even if we buy the same things, he said, "Your thing doesn’t matter if it is broken, but my thing is very precious". He painted his own kit ((I don't know the equivalent word in English. Hiroshi : Hide said, "When I was called to the playground, there were only fat students there. They let us run". He kept telling me that he felt very humiliated at that time.
narrator : The boy, Hide, became interested in guitars.
Yamada Hiroyasu (classmate) : My brother played the folk guitar at that time. I also learned the basic scale. I taught it to Hide.
Yoneyama Yuji (classmate) : "This is do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do". We started like that.
Hide : I started dreaming of playing the guitar, recklessly.
Yamada Hiroyasu (classmate) : He pretended to play the guitar holding a tennis racket.
Hide : Back then, I belonged to the tennis club even though I was fat. I was pretending to play the guitar by holding a tennis racket. Then suddenly my mother came into my room and I was embarrassed.
Yamada Hiroyasu (classmate) : As far as I can remember, Hide said that his grandmother bought him a guitar.
Hide : When I was in 9th grade, I asked my grandmother crying. "Grandma, I want to have Gibson Les Paul" (laugh) Thus, when I was in junior high school, I sang hit songs medley holding an electric guitar.
Higaki Takaya (classmate) : He used to sing anime theme songs. Hide's favorites were "Mazinger Z", "Devilman", and rock version of "Sazae-san". When the song to perform was decided, he laughed and played.
Hiroshi : He found that his guitar sound was different from the sound coming from TV. Then he asked, "Why is this different?"
Hide : I didn't have an effector, so there was no change in the sound. But I believed that the sound would be different if my guitar skills improved.
Hiroshi : I opened the door of his room and saw what he was doing. Hide ripped the back of the guitar off and was applying glue on it. I asked him if the guitar was broken. He replied that the sound didn't change. I said "It looks to be broken. Is it Okay?", then he said "Get out of here".
Hide : One day, it was noisy so I was wearing headphones. I threw the headphones out and left the room, then, I heard some noise from my room. I went back to my room to see if I turned off the recorder, and I found it sounded from the headphones. At that moment, I thought "This is it! Everyone is doing this way, even Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore and Ace Frehley are doing it this way!" After that, I played the guitar by raising the volume wearing headphones. From then on, I didn't even touch the amplifier, and just broke six or more headphones. (laugh)
narrator : Learning guitar became an opportunity to meet rock music.
Hide : One day in junior high school, my friend let me listen to KISS's music in his house. But I didn't like KISS's makeup. Thus, I borrowed the tape, but I just put it away. One day, I had nothing to do, so I listened to that tape. After listening to it, I was shocked, "What's this?" It was the first time I was hit by a thunderstorm of music. I started thinking that I was born for rock. From then on, my Rock'n'Roll life started.
narrator : Later, Hide left these words.

narrator : You can't find the answer unless you stay away from yourself in the past. It took quite a long time for the idea to change. Time to reach an unimaginable future for an ordinary boy.
Hiroshi : He stared at an audience who didn't focus on the concert. Then he suddenly jumped into the audience and beat him with a guitar. I was shocked to see it.
narrator : He kept replacing members to raise the band's level. Conflict and anguish arose because of the members to be removed.
Yamada Hiroyasu (classmate) : I heard he was suffering from members problem.
Hiroshi : While strictly managing the members to be professional, he seemed to be sad every time he changed members. Sometimes he sobbed in the room.
narrator : Then the moment the best members come together came. They were vocalist "Kyo" and drummer "Tetsu".
interviewer : How was Hide?
Kyo (D'ERLANGER / Vocal) : Hide's way of working was...
Tetsu (D'ERLANGER / Drums) : Hide revealed himself in his work.
Kyo (D'ERLANGER) : That's true. He came with raw ideas and completed them with the people in the studio.
Tetsu (D'ERLANGER) : He was improvised.
Kyo (D'ERLANGER) : He didn't like the typical things.
Tetsu (D'ERLANGER) : He bothered us to do this and that. Actually I didn't understand why he had us do that, but after finishing it, I ended up understanding him. He was a follower of intuition.
narrator : The three major garbage bands in Kanto region that influenced Indies scene. Saver Tiger was one of them. Also, X, which greatly influenced Hide's life.
Yoshiki : Hide was biting raw meat at a livehouse. I thought, "Who is that weirdo?" I didn't want to get very close with him.

Yoshiki : But he was very cool. He was chewing raw meat and was very sensual. I already knew at that point that he and I would be together.
narrator : One of the three major garbage bands in the Kanto region, DEMENTIA.
Shigeru GEESS Kosugi (the president of HOWLING BULL / ex-DEMENTIA vocal) : He had a very fancy makeup, but his personality was quite humble. But when the performance begins... Hide's aura was awesome. I thought, "This guy is crazy".
narrator : At that time, Hide said :
Shigeru GEESS Kosugi (the president of HOWLING BULL / ex-DEMENTIA vocal) : Hide said, he hated himself. That’s why he created the present Hide. And he said that he was worried about whether he could produce Hide well as he imagined himself or not. He said that Hideto Matsumoto is desperately producing Hide to be more beautiful than anyone. He already knew that way at that time.

I.N.A (hide with Spread Beaver) : The relationship between Hide and Hideto Matsumoto was perfectly that of two sides. He didn’t mix the two together, right? The two couldn’t be one.
Kanno Hideo (photographer) : He had as many shadows as light. He was an expressionist himself, but he might have had frustrations and conflicts about that he could not express.
I.N.A (hide with Spread Beaver) : He was a perfectionist but was not perfect. Thus, he seemed to have always aimed for perfection.
CHIROLYN (hide with Spread Beaver) : He was a very delicate person. So I had to keep distance from him to be friends with him. Even if you get acquainted with him, you will not understand the whole world of Hide.
I.N.A (hide with Spread Beaver) : He was not a rock star whose personal life was a mess. He took care of very trifling things. But when he drank, he used to become violent.
Kiyoshi (hide with Spread Beaver) : He was spoiled and sincere at the same time. (laughs) He was double-faced inside.
Takahashi Emi (Stylist) : There were two worlds within him. He had a part to enjoy, but sometimes he acted like it was calculated.
D.I.E (hide with Spread Beaver) : “Two-sided” is a word for Hide.
I.N.A (hide with Spread Beaver) : Hideto, the boy, remains intact. And Hide was born as a new personality. Hideto Matsumoto had “rock star Hide” inside. We shared a lot about music. But I feel like I did not understand Hide in a human way. The more I think about it, the more I feel it.
narrator : Hide’s character was a mask that fascinated people. But this may had been the cause for the conflict of mind at times.

Tetsu (D'ERLANGER / Drums) : Hide’s attitude and mindset seemed to be very irrational to me. Hide was not going to compromise. I said, “I can’t accept it, I’ll quit”. Because if I stayed in the band, there would be only conflicts.
narrator : Hide had confidence in the composition of the members. He didn’t want to lose them. Thus, he made an extreme decision.

Tetsu (D'ERLANGER) : Hide said that if I leave the band, he would also leave the band, and become a hairdresser. I said “Never say that”. But I didn’t want to reverse my decision.
Shigeru GEESS Kosugi (the president of HOWLING BULL / ex-DEMENTIA vocal) : When Hide was in Saver Tiger, I asked him to join us but I was rejected. (laughs)
Hiroshi : There was no reason to suddenly stop playing the guitar for a guy who had been enjoying the guitar for so long. I knew he’d cried a lot.
Yoshiki : I received a phone call. Hide said that he disbanded the band and would quit the music. But he showed indications of wanting to be together. I realized that he was still motivated. At that time, our band was rehearsing. So I asked, “Will you come to see us?”. He came and watched the rehearsal. He seemed to have a lot of thoughts. After that, we went for a drink. He said “I’m going to join X”. We were all surprised and very excited to hear that.
narrator : SEXX GEORGE from LADIESROOM who was the road manager of X at that time.
SEXX GEORGE(LADIESROOM) : I really wanted to stop it. It was tremendously hard for me to manage Yoshiki. Then another monster is joining X? (laughs)

Yoshiki : Hide was brilliant. I knew we will have good chemistry. I was convinced of it when Hide came in, even before playing with him. I thought it would be a new beginning.
Tetsu (D'ERLANGER) : Hide called me and said that he joined X. I told him “Good for you”.
Kyo (D'ERLANGER) : I guess the reason why Hide called Tetsu. Hide knew that Tetsu didn’t want him to quit the music. That’s probably why Hide called. Hide said that even if Saver Tiger had disappeared, the members would spread like embers. He told me, “Tetsu, who put a soul in music is about to form a new band. You are going to pursue a splendid rock’n’roll. And I will take the things that I wanted to show in Saver Tiger to X. And then I’ll change X.” He said each seed would become four times stronger if dispersed. It is an intense reminder of my impression.
narrator : X has achieved a higher leap since Hide’s joining. X’s influence has grown in the indie scene more and more.

narrator : At that time, Color appeared in the Kansai region. People used to call it, “X in the east and Color in the west”.
Dynamite Tommy (CEO of sun-krad / COLOR vocal) : There was an accident during the live performance. Japan had a custom, so I suggested to have time for self-restraint. But everyone acted as they pleased. “Fans want us to keep performing”... claiming like that. They didn’t listen to me at all. I asked Hide what to do. And then he said, “There is the custom in Japan. Sometimes you have to follow it.” He gave me several CDs and said, “How about you do this kind of music?” Usually people don’t care about other bands like that. But he said so and I was comforted. I thought he really cared about me.
narrator : X came out of the indie scene and debuted in the major scene. It changes the history of Japanese rock scene. In 1992, X was renamed X Japan to advance into the world and moved their base to LA. The images that came out from the inside. The photobook which became the new page of expressionist Hide. “I don’t need a life-size statue of mine. I want to create a photo album that reverses the existing image”

narrator : “It was most difficult to be familiar with my own voice”
Hide : [♪Eyes Love You] : Butterflies and moths fastened to needles ♪
I.N.A : I participated in his singing practice. He recorded nearly a thousand times.
Kyo : He was so troubled by recording too many times. I told him that he didn’t have to record so many times. It was the only advice I ever gave him.
Hide : I’m currently singing as a solo. However, when I was an amateur who loved rock music, I really hated vocalists. They all like to meddle in and want to get attentions. I thought that none of vocalists were normal. I thought I was far from vocalists. The way of playing the guitar quietly on one side of the stage was very attractive to me. That’s why I wanted to be a guitarist.
I.N.A : You can see from the album credit. It’s written “Voice” instead of “Vocalist” on the album credit. He seemed to think “I’m not a vocalist yet”. He was still looking for the directions to go forward.

* The stylist who appears at around 18:00 was Hide’s girl friend. She was the first person who discovered that Hide died.
3) 30:00~45:00
Hide : [♪Eyes Love You] Eyes love you, now the eyes have snatched you. My eyes love you♪
narrator : The music friends whom Hide met. Those who should not be lost.
Hide : [♪Eyes Love You] I want to indulge you in it.
Pata (X Japan) : He would not have planned to invite me to his first tour. Ran* suggested him that Pata should join. (laughs) Then I decided to join. I didn’t care much about it though. (laughs)
JOE (hide with Spread Beaver / drums) : The first day we met, we drank and went for another round. We were on our way to another bar. I didn’t know what the problem was, but Hide was smashing a vending machine. I stopped him because he was kicking it with his foot. I asked him if he was upset because it didn't dispense a drink. He said no, so I asked why he was angry. He said nothing Thus, I said “You idiot. Let’s go!” and dragged him. And then, I was talking to someone other than Hide at the bar. Then Hide suddenly stood up to yell, “Am I an idiot?” and hit me. Later, he called me and said he was sorry. He said he couldn’t sleep at all and apologized about his behavior. I said it was okay because it happened while we were drinking and then told him “Let’s drink together again later”. Then he said “Thank you” and hung up the phone. After a while, he told me about his solo album and said “I’ll tour later so I want you to join us”.
D.I.E (hide with Spread Beaver / keyboard) : I was an unknown keyboardist at that time. I was so excited to meet the member of X. Hide was waiting for me with his sunglasses on. I had a heartbeat. I still remember the heartbeat at that time. I felt like I was going to see the count of Monte Cristo. I first met him with such tension and excitement.
Hide : [♪Eyes Love You] My eyes love you, trapped in tears.
CHIROLYN (hide with Spread Beaver / bass) : Hide’s first impression was... I felt like I saw the bareface of Kabuki actress. His skin was very good. Hide liked Hideyuki.** One day, he was seeing Hideyuki on TV. I was playing behind him then. He said he’d wanted to be with me since he saw me on TV. I first met Hide and heard “Yoroshiku”. Just a handshake with him settled everything. Normally, they ask me to play (for audition). But Hide shook hands and said “Yoshoshiku”. (I don't know how to translate it in English. Yoroshiku is a Japanese greeting. It means ”Please be nice to me”... odd if it is directly translated in English. Anyway, it implies that Hide wanted to be with CHIROLYN from the day on)
narrator : The fateful encounter with I.N.A who had been the manipulator of X. Hide moved I.N.A from the backstage to onstage. Hide and I.N.A had a lot in common about music. So all the songs were made by Hide and I.N.A in collaboration. “The musician Hide is produced by Hideto Matsumoto and INA”. Hide’s solo activity was spurred through the collaboration.
I.N.A : He said he wanted to make the best team by gathering people he liked. He invited me to his team. Instead, he wanted me to exert all my talents only for him. There were another condition. He said, if we work together, we have to work on an equal footing. He said I should not admire him in order to to collaborate. We could collaborate because it was under those conditions.
narrator : “I.N.A, Use all your talents only for me”. I.N.A who worked as right arm in Hide’s solo activity. The life of I.N.A has changed drastically by meeting Hide.

Hide : [♪DICE] Everything in front of me looks like monsters. The weight of the time and the specter of the past chase me. I'm being swept away and swallowed by rotting and blowing. The pipe of consciousness is cut off in a cross shape. Let the flowers bloom as you think. Before it is torn up and wilted. Someday the bud becomes a flower. I'll tell you who are vomiting the ideal♪
I.N.A : The recording of X was over while we were preparing for a live performance. Hide decided to stay with X and I came back to our rehearsal room. There were only people I saw for the first time. Hide said, “Do something with them until I get back”. So I tried to practice with them.
CHIROLYN (hide with Spread Beaver) : But we’ve all just met and shook hands. We were not friends. People came into the rehearsal room one by one asking “Is this the studio?” I.N.A was sitting here, me and D.I.E were sitting there. Then I.N.A said, “Chirolyn, play 16 bars by slapping” as if he were a teacher. I thought “What the hell is that guy?”
I.N.A : After that, Hide came back and listened to what we were doing. He was very angry. “What’s this? You’ve done nothing until now.”
PATA : Most members didn’t memorize the songs. (laugh) Of course, I was one of them. (laugh) When I was told “Next song is... ”, then I wore headphones and copied it in secret.
I.N.A : (laughs) “Pata, you didn’t practice at all” (laughs)
CHIROLYN (hide with Spread Beaver) : He got drunk and released his stress out. The fight started with “Why is your hair red?”. We seized each other’s collar and caused a disturbance. I think that Hide was a person who was clumsy in human relationships. After fighting, I felt more comfortable with him. Maybe because I felt in my heart that I wanted to forgive him. So... (thinking) (with his arms folded) On second thought, I feel as if I was deceived by him.
JOE : When we were rehearsing for the first time together, Hide said, “I’m sorry that I like rehearsals”.
PATA : He was worried when we were rehearsing. I asked him “Do we have to do so much rehearsal?”.
KYO (D'ERLANGER) : At that time, Tetsu asked me, “Have you heard Hide’s solo songs?”. I answered “Not yet”, and he said “The songs are very Hide”.
Hide : [♪DICE] When I stretch out my hand, it drifts away. A reward of vanity, wasted and released libido. The meaning of existence at the end of long suffering. Me, in the mirror crying to let him know. Let me water the dried flower of yours, if the flower doesn’t end. Will the flower bloom or rot? Dice with only two results. narrator : HIDE as a member of X Japan, and hide as a solo singer.
I.N.A : X members decided they would do solo activities, and then the recording company said, “If you do, your albums will sell well”. Hide was offended by that words. “Mine sells well? No matter what I do? What does it mean? That’s not music. I don’t want to do those things.” He had such a conflict.

HIDE : [♪DOUBT] Unfold the trick in your hand. Seeds in oil which smell bad enough to be expressed. If it sprouts, it will be your wonderful dinner. The remaining food is scattered and rolling here and there. Take me trash! ♪
narrator : At that time, hide became aware of himself who had got caught up in commercialism. ‘What am I doing?’. “DOUBT” was born in anger of himself. Hide swore to keep singing “DOUBT” so that he would not forget his mind of that moment.
HIDE : Hey gentlemen! Is the water there so sweet? Gentleman, try some musty diamonds. Doubt, doubt, doubt you. Flesh are cut and bones are broken. Doubt, doubt, doubt you. Tuning of rabies singer. I.N.A : During the live performance, he realized that he was singing and talking to himself in childhood. I felt it during the live performance. This guy has been wanting to do something like this.
Hide : [♪TELL ME] Even though I am exposed to the shiny wind, I’m gazing at me that can not be melt. Not even showing the way I walk, the outline becomes clear. The body dancing in illusion is the pantomime, which is the opposite of my mind. The reason to fill up wounds with something is only for me to be myself. Tell me, somebody tell me, please tell me. Even with voiceless words. Tell me, somebody tell me, please tell me. Your voice has not arrived yet. Even though I look for distorted love, it is answerless and meaningless, I’m just greedy. My own voice is being swept away. I can’t hear it until it becomes ashes. Tell me, somebody tell me, please tell me. Who is covering my eyes? Tell me, somebody tell me, please tell me. My eyes are looking at you. ♪
narrator : “I’ve never sang a song about the society. I’ve been singing songs only about my personal story. The theme of this album is ‘initial impulse’. The first listener was myself in childhood. So it’s a very private album.”

He suddenly picked up a fire extinguisher and hit the door of my room. bang! bang! I was really scared. Eventually the hinge was broken. So I blocked the door from the inside. After a while, he went back to his room. This is what I heard later, but they said that Hide threw many things at the window. (laughs)
I.N.A : Later, Pata told me. If that happens again, I don’t need to hesitate to open the door. Hide will just look around the room and will go back. (laugh)

The combination of “kowai(怖い:scary)” and “kawaii(可愛い:cute)”, the new word “kowaii” became its concept. While designing the stuffs for LEMONeD, he developed clothing business and opened design shops and beauty shops.
Takahashi Emi (stylist) : He said he was going to seek a new office and told me to go with him. Hide said, “We can do whatever here because it’s a shopping mall”. And he asked me “Emi Chan, Would you like to do something here?” (laugh) I replied, “Shall we sell juice here? Because the name of the shop is LEMONeD”. I jokingly said to him, but he told me “Yes, go ahead”.
Miyagi Hiroshi (Hair & Make Up Artist) : I told him that I wanted to run a beauty salon and he allowed me to do it. When I opened the shop, the number of customers didn’t increase. Hide said, “Be more active”. So I answered, “Yes, Sir”

narrator : And the club event hosted by LEMONeD was held. The days when the internet was not yet available. They decided to broadcast the event of four places simultaneously via the internet. The event that surpassed the era. It may look common nowadays, but it was a revolutionary idea for those days. The plan originated with Hide. LEMONeD established by HIDE. A meeting with a band was the occasion for the establishment of this label. One of the bands whose life has changed drastically due to the encounter with HIDE, ZEPPET STORE. They had been releasing their self-produced CDs before the debut in the major scene. Hide accidentally heard the CDs. “I realized the mission given to me besides music”.
Hide : I felt as if the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle was put in place. I thought it’s a kind of opportunity or encounter to hear the songs that convey the feeling of composer.

narrator : The road to major debut. Hide was different from other companies that only talked about business. He said that we had a future because our music was awesome.

Seiji Kimura (ZEPPET STORE / vocal) : Once Hide has fought his staff because of us. He heard from the staff that Zeppet Store was not commercially viable. “If you don’t know how to sell, try to like them. Listen to their music until you really like theirs.” Hide exploded with fury and hit the wall to make a hole.
YANA (ZEPPET STORE / drums) : He told the staff “You’re fired”. I was looking at them vacantly.
Seiji Kimura (ZEPPET STORE / vocal) : He looked so disappointed. He was angry but somehow looked disappointed. We were happy to see him like that though.
narrator : Hide made Zeppet Store debut and decided to tour the US at the same time.
Seiji Kimura (ZEPPET STORE / vocal) : Probably that’s what he wanted to do. Looking back, he wanted it himself for sure. Because Hide let us tour with his own money.

YANA (ZEPPET STORE / drum) : Not the staff of Hide’s company but the owner of a sushi restaurant came.
Seiji Kimura (ZEPPET STORE / vocal) : The owner of the sushi restaurant said “Hey! Hide, what are you doing?” Hide got off the car, saying “I’m sorry”. We decided to stop the frenzy and go back gently. On our way back, Zeppet Store’s song came on the radio.

Joe (hide with Spread Beaver) : He has been a person who kept on amazing and entertaining people since he released his first album. But he became different when he released his second album. It was not hide who put band X in the background. Because he established the style of solo singer Hide, the breadth of his music has expanded. He was free from the constraints of his hands and feet.

Kadono Hasashi (RED SHOES/Rally owner) : Unexpectedly, he went onstage without the guitar. I was very surprised.
D.I.E (hide with Spread Beaver) : He had a very objective point of view. He objectively analyzed the activities of his 1st album and planned the 2nd album activity to be without the guitar. It is surprising that he has abandoned the guitar even though he was originally a guitarist. He was not tied to being a guitarist. At that point, he was already an artist.
Kiyoshi (hide with Spread Beaver) : He rehearsed again and again and began to think that it would be okay to do without guitar.
PATA : (laugh) It’s certainly true. He gradually gave up playing the guitar. (laugh)
Joe (hide with Spread Beaver) : He was not simply aiming to discard the guitar. I think that he wanted to convey the songs and lyrics clearly.
?? : When he finished his 1st album tour and began working on the 2nd album, I think he’s got the confidence as a vocalist.

PATA : The fact that he heightened the key of the songs is the proof that he fell into singing. I’d not thought he was poor at singing until then, but at that time I thought “He became a vocalist” for the first time.
I.N.A : When he was a member of X, he was allowed to be a strange guitarist in the band. But when he was soloing, he had to fascinate people himself. At that time, he found something completely new inside. He found the answer on the way, rather than he had the answer from the start.

Tetsu (D'ERLANGER) : It was a whole new world of his. I was surprised enough to scream unconsciously. There was a tremendous evolution between the 1st album and the 2nd album.
PATA : I didn’t think it was unexpected. I knew Hide was into pop.
Seiji Kimura (ZEPPET STORE / vocal) : He wanted to express the feeling of being merged into one. He seems to have wanted to take out the things from his drawer and play music named Hide. His second album properly expressed the feeling.

narrator : Hide’s antenna was extended from Japan to the world. The second solo album and zilch album “3.2.1” were produced almost at the same time.

Hide : I wanted to let them know the beauty and the fun of Japanese when it becomes music. I believe I won if there is no sense of incongruity despite I set Japanese lyrics to heavy rock on purpose. Whether I sing in Japanese or English, I want to make sure there is no difference in sound. In a word, it is something to deliver. I know that if the listeners are English speakers, I need to make it in English. But I want to let them know that it was originally made by Japanese. I want to share the unique complexity and beauty of Japanese with them.

Joe (hide with Spread Beaver) : I asked him what the “Spread Beaver” means. He then said (hand gesture) “It means this” (laugh) So I said “What? Why did you make such an embarrassing name?” And he said “I wanted to make the most embarrassing name”.
CHIROLYN (hide with Spread Beaver) : When someone used the word “workplace”, then he got angry and yelled “It’s not a workplace!”. (laugh)
Kiyoshi (hide with Spread Beaver) : Hide had a strong desire to have a band. He said “You guys are a band. You are not my session musicians”.
Joe (hide with Spread Beaver) : He said it was a good idea to give our band a name. He said there’s nothing to change because we were a band from the start.
D.I.E (hide with Spread Beaver) : We were promoted from our perspective. Until then we’d been supporting players, but we finally became members of the band. I really became a member of the band.

narrator : After disassembling each note played by a person, they reassembled it and stacked it up in several layers. Then they mixed their computer-generated music with this. Psyborg rock meant that the tone of human and machine were fused together. The style created with I.N.A.
Hide : Formally I was soloing while I was belonging to X. I was a solo singer without a band. Since I didn’t have members, I became dependent on the machine. When I sing and play the guitar, the computer aids, that was the way I envisioned. We proceeded in that way and eventually reached here.
I.N.A : We already used that method a lot when we worked on the first album. We sampled the phrases of the guitar. Pressing each keyboard key causes a recorded guitar phrase to sound. We made songs by playing this keyboard. We’ve been experimenting with such a variety of things.
Hide : It’ll not change much. Rock music will continue to be played through human groups and machine groups. According to the genre classification in Japan, it’s called “Visual Rock”, but visual rock doesn’t mean music. So I wanted to declare it a “Psyborg Rock”. It’s still questionable if this is a music genre. I’m making noise that it will be fun if this becomes trend.
Eric Westfall (Recording Engineer) : (in Japanese. He speaks fluent Japanese) Hide has an international mindset that is not limited to Japan. He is working in Japan because he is a Japanese. But I think he will be successful enough if he release albums here. When I let my colleagues listen to his music, they were all surprised a lot.
Hide : Overall, it’s not much different from the previous two albums. I think I achieved some of the goals I wanted to achieve in this album. I think this album will strongly show the fusion of my aspiration as a singer and the rock music I wanted to do.

narrator : One night, only me and Hide drank without other people for the first time. Growth of younger brother. It was the time to achieve recognition as the aide to Hide and to share the plan for the future.
Hiroshi : Hide said “Be my spokesperson so you can speak equally to me”. I was surprised when I heard that.
Enatu Yojo (Security) : Hide would have kept it in his mind. I speculate that he had a harsh whip on Hiroshi because he wanted his brother to be his spokesperson someday.
Hiroshi : Zilch had been trying to do overseas activities since then, hide with Spread Beaver had also been on the rise. “We are going to be very busy because I am aiming for overseas activities”. He said that he couldn’t fight unless he had the carefully selected staff. Until then, Hide was the president and the artist.

Hide : The “Pink Spider” means a spider that caresses the delusion. Web spinned by spiders is “web” in English. Web is the best way for us to gain information. The internet is an example. That’s how the spider that spewed the web to collect information should live only in the web that he created. The spider who doesn’t know other world is deluding himself that the web he spinned is the source of information. It is a story of a man who is trapped in a delusion and doesn’t know outside. At last, the spider longs for clouds and flies to another world called sky. He admires the clouds and ascends to the sky. In fact, clouds are only a component of the sky. After all, the spider ends up becoming just a part of the sky.
(( In japanese, spider[クモ : kumo] and cloud[雲 : kumo] are homonyms. It’s interesting that kumo(spider) admires kumo(cloud) and becomes kumo[cloud] ))
Joe (hide with Spread Beaver) : I asked him, “Did you borrow the lyrics from a tale? If not, is there a model of the lyrics?” He didn’t answer. It seemed that he didn’t want to answer, so I tried to change the topic. Then, about 5 seconds later, he said “It’s my story”.
Hide : My new single “Pink Spider” that is scheduled to be released on May 23th.

narrator : Even though there wasn’t hide, the third album was completed. The person who succeeded Hide was Hide’s right-hand man, I.N.A.
I.N.A : I wanted to complete the album because I saw the people who gathered in Tsukiji. (crying) Excuse me. Suddenly I recall the memory. (wiping tears) Sorry. I wanted to deliver hide’s songs to the people somehow. I will never forget the scene forever.
Hiroshi : I was about to complete the album “Ja, Zoo” on my responsibility. I can’t make music, so I asked I.N.A to complete the album in order to deliver it to people. I wanted to help people who have cut themselves off from the world and those who have been unable to hear Hide’s music since his death.
narrator : The way to completion of “Ja, Zoo”
D.I.E (hide with Spread Beaver) : We had to complete the unfinished album. Because that’s what hide left.
I.N.A : There were songs in draft while there were the finished. Among them, only the recorded songs could be completed.
narrator : Many people voiced their approval or disapproval on the news that “Ja, Zoo” would be completed without hide. It was a very hard work both physically and mentally. Until now, hide has been making a decision. But from now on, I.N.A is responsible for everything.

Joe (hide with Spread Beaver) : There is no case that you go on tour without hero. We couldn’t expect what would happen. We didn’t figure out what to do even though we agonized over it for a long time. But we concluded that it’s better to do than not.
Kiyoshi (hide with Spread Beaver) : Hide was gone that way. But we didn’t think like “It’s over. Dismiss!”.
Joe (hide with Spread Beaver) : We concluded that it is better to go on tour both for hide and for the fans.
D.I.E (hide with Spread Beaver) : Unlike heretofore, hide can’t guide direction anymore. Therefore we wondered that who should play hide's role? I.N.A had to do it. Who would do it if it were not I.N.A? Who else? He had been with hide, so we thought it would work well.
Hiroshi : It was “Ja, Zoo” tour without hide, so I had to ask a lot of things to I.N.A. But I.N.A said he couldn’t do everything because he was not hide.
I.N.A : So I worried about what I should do.
Joe (hide with Spread Beaver) : We were so nervous until we started. How should we do?
D.I.E (hide with Spread Beaver) : JOE said we were the ones that hide chose, so let’s play as a band. That was a kind of motive.

D.I.E (hide with Spread Beaver) : As soon as the live started, everyone there was crying. We cried and all the audience cried too. Everyone cried sadly. Is there such a concert?
CHIROLYN (hide with Spread Beaver) : Stress was beyond belief. The relationship between the members became strange. The staff also seemed to be out of their mind.
Kiyoshi (hide with Spread Beaver) : On second thought, it was a little reckless. But I think it was good to do. We started in order to finish it but it does not end. It’s not over yet. We’re still on that extension.

Miyagi Hiroshi (Hair & Make Up Artist) : Once he was on stage with “regent cut”. ((regent cut : Japanese call pompadour hairstyle “regent cut”)) He said he was embarrassed, so I turned his hair back to his original style. He said he was embarrassed because everyone looks at him.
hide : What the hell is this? (laughs)
Hiroshi : I was being beaten when I was in elementary school. I ran to the front of my house, then hide came out and mounted on the fellow and beat him. He was fighting well.
I.N.A : We got teased so much at the time of the 2nd album tour. People said it’s the mascot for brothels. ((I don’t know what I.N.A means by “the mascot during the 2nd album tour” in this sentence. Anyone knows?)) I don’t go to brothel. They teased that it’s an angel character for the nationwide prostitution business. I really wanted to stop. I begged hide not to do that because my parents was supposed to come the day. Then hide said “That’s none of my business”. (laughs) I really hated him. It’s all memories.
