Well, only few hour for the first show to start. The second one is the most interesting but the spread beaver reunion is something nice to see. I'll try to be here while the two shows happen, so if you find anything anywhere post it too, hope we can make a great thread as the other ones.

There's no website or TV show broadcasting it live, but let's hope that in the end there will be someway to see it or listen it live, even if there is or not please post all the pictures you find :D i'll do it too.

 :D

I want as much info as people can post. I'll credit you directly if I use it.

Nice, thanks.  That's 10 PM for me, so unless I get really busy, I'll be here "watching" most of it via this thread.

(Or if it actually starts at 13:00 Japan time... then I'll be here, but will miss more of the beginning, probably. :P)

Will buzz here as soon as I get back home.

According to some Japanese forums it has already started, but nobody pays attention since they don't find today's show interesting, some user said that they received sms with this line up for the moment:
- DJ Ozma
- DaizyStripper
And now might come Versailles. Some people say that one of them has played Misery.

As you can se there's nothing to broadcast live and all information will come from SMS and text messages, which some could be very wrong.

According to some posts on mixi, the third performer was indeed Ra:IN.  People are posting to mixi straight from the concert.  I've also had it confirmed through mixi that DJ OZMA has already performed.  Probably first, as already reported.

Now it seems to be time for Rize, and well, they might play Pink Spider.

I've only been able to find one topic on mixi posting about it, and the posts are few and far between.  It's very different from the X JAPAN reunion concerts, where people were posting every thirty seconds or so with an update on exactly which song was being played and what was happening at the concert.

It will probably be more lively for the next concert.  I also know some people who are actually going, with promises to send me keitai emails during the bands they don't like.

I think it might have started a little late, but it was nothing like the 3.28 X JAPAN concert.  Is it confirmed that they're only performing four songs apiece?  I hadn't heard that.

That's interesting-- I'm not entirely surprised though.  Other than Ra:IN and Spread Beaver, I don't think the bands in today's show would have much wide appeal among most X and/or hide fans.

How's the atmosphere at the show itself, if anyone knows?  Is the audience into it?

Each band seems to be covering one hide song, and then, I presume, playing one of their own.  The only one I've gotten confirmed, though, is of OZMA covering "ever free."  According to a post above, DaizyStripper might have performed "misery," and Ra:IN, who was third, I have no idea about, and RIZE, fourth, seems to have performed "Pink Spider."

From what I can tell, it seems that each band has about a thirty minute set (though I'm totally guessing on that one).  According to some mixi posts, LUNA SEA will have a 70 minute set tomorrow, and I presume Dir en grey and X JAPAN will too, but I haven't seen that confirmed by any official source, so it's completely rumor right now.

I've just gotten an update on the staging for the show.  Basically, to cut out set-up/break-down times, they seem to have set up three stages (if I read this correctly).  There's a large stage in the middle that is the "main stage" where the non-visual bands (RIZE, Maximum the Hormone) have been performing.  On the right and the left, there are two smaller stages, where the visual bands have been performing.

There are also four monitors, two large and one small on each side, for the people who are too far back to see the stage clearly.

I could be wrong, so don't fully take my word on this, but that's what it sounded like when it was described to me.

This SEEMS to be the final set list, though not confirmed, from the order that things have shaped up to be.  I don't think that Spread Beaver has gone on yet, but it seems people are speculating about the remaining order based on who has gone on thus far.  I wish I could give a more concrete answer, but as mentioned earlier in the thread, almost no one is talking about these lives.  Everyone seems pretty apathetic, even people at the actual concert, and half of them seem to dislike half the bands there (I've seen some pretty polite bashing of Maximum the Hormone and MarBell thus far  :( ).

Anyway, to the best of my knowledge, this is the set list.  If any surprises come to my attention, I'll post, but I might be going to bed.

1. OZMA
2. DaizyStripper
3. Ra:IN
4. RIZE
5. Versailles
6. Marbell
7. Maximum the Hormone
8. Phantasmagoria
9. hurdy gurdy

I got another update, and then I probably am really going to sleep.  First off, someone said (and again, this is only from one source) that on the main stage, sets were about 40 minutes each, but on the smaller stages, they were only about fifteen minutes each.  However, they did speculate that tomorrow's sets might be longer, and I have seen it rumored that LUNA SEA, at the least, is intended to play 70 minutes (again, rumored).

Also, no one has yet been able to comment on the MCs, but apparently, from some parts of the arena, the sound quality was too bad for the MC to be understood very well.

I do believe that it is over.  X JAPAN will definitely be performing more than one song.  All the bands performed more than one song.  The rumor is just that they performed one HIDE song, and the rest were their own songs.  If the other rumor, that LUNA SEA will be playing over an hour tomorrow, is true, then I suspect X JAPAN will receive similar treatment.  We'll have to wait and see.

I commented to ToE to tell you this, but I believe I may have read from mixi that he didn't intend to come to today's show.  But then, I skipped over the message quickly, so I don't really know if that was the actual content or if I had misread it.  Part of me would tend to think that I'd read it wrong, since I'd hope that he'd be there to support Pata, at least, but...I'm not sure.  I wish I could find the thread again, but I read it earlier today and seem to have misplaced it.

Having been to numerous multiband lives since I moved to Japan, I have to say that this is definitely a convenient choice for them.  The time that it takes to dismantle and set up all the equipment for the band going offstage and the band coming onstage provides for serious lag time, and it's really easy to completely lose interest in the live altogether while waiting. Considering that it's such a large stadium, it's unlikely too many people could see very clearly what was going on on the main stage without the aid of the giant screens anyway, so the moving focal point of the live probably wasn't a huge issue.

It's just unusual for festivals in europe to have 3 stages when only 10 or 11 bands are gonna performe (unless every band would perform a 2hour set or so). Of course you are right, it takes some time to get all the stuff of the stage and then for the new band back on, but I never thought that would be a big issue for anyone, that's just "normal" for me.
Anyone knows how long the concert lasted today? From the first song till the last?

I'm a little disappointed with the setlist. I mean it's like Ra:in were the only ones not to feel too BIG and IMPORTANT to play between the smaller acts.

It would've been much more useful if they mixed the smaller with the bigger acts, just to make both days just as enjoyable and worthwhile...

but oh well, Thank you for keeping us informed!!!

I kind of agree, of course, but considering that it was being filmed, and all, and is going to be broadcast hastily, I think they'd prefer not to have too many giant breaks.  That said, this was partially organized by Yoshiki (along with hide's brother), and Yoshiki is the KING of overdoing things.

From what I can tell, the concert seems to have lasted about four hours, but no one is giving definitive answers on start or end times, so maybe an official report, or at the very least, the upcoming WOWOW broadcast will answer that question better.

Well, it doesn't surprise me that he wasn't there. After all, if he's performing tomorrow (and considering his complaints about his own physical condition) it' just normal that he's resting by now.

Thanks all for the updates.

Yeah, doesn't look like it was very... thrilling?  Well, I guess that's what you get when you hold a hide memorial summit where the majority of the bands in the lineup have nothing to do with hide.  Still a shame about that, hide deserves better.  Hopefully the second day will be an improvement over the first.

Has any info come out about Spread Beaver's performance, by the way?  I'm really curious how it went, any info at all would be great...

Ah, TM.R went before hurdy gurdy?  The person I got it from was wrong, then?  It's so frustrating to keep up with these concerts in real time, because unlike during the X JAPAN concerts, when the updates were constant and generally accurate, everyone seems to be contradicting each other and almost no one is posting.  I swear that when I was watching posts last night, two different people simultaneously claimed that different bands were onstage.  :?

That's a good question.  I live in Japan, and my first experience with DJ OZMA was on some television show, and since then, I can't see to get rid of him.  DJ OZMA seems to be one of those fads that Japan in going through, in which for a short time (I'm HOPING a short time!) every person in Japan thinks he's about the greatest thing since sliced bread.  He'd on television an awful lot, so I figure he is indeed pretty popular, though I can't boast having met a single person who actually likes him.  Though I do hang out in kind of the wrong crowd for that, anyway.

The reason there are a lot of pictures of him in this, though, is probably because of the "hide cosplay" factor.  With the exception of Ra:IN and Spread Beaver, that almost gives him more of a connection to hide than anyone else at this show, which is sad.  I was also hoping to see more Ra:IN and Spread Beaver photos, considering they're the only bands with even a minute personal connection to hide past hero worship from neo-visual guitarists.

The first song I heard from him was some sort of spoof on a superhero--"Superman" or "Spiderman" or something like that.  It was pretty much the stupidest song I've ever heard, if I do say so myself.  That said, I had it stuck in my head for about three days, after hearing it only once.  There's something very catchy about his music, which is one point in his favor, but his performances are complete crack (if I recall, there were loads of backup dancers in superhero costumes, doing synchronized choreography).  I figure that this catchiness is why he's caught on so well in Japan, but honestly, I can't say that I understand it.  I'm a little miffed at about half the artists chosen for the hide memorial summit, and DJ OZMA is no exception.

According to some message boards, the event was actually moved to start earlier today, at 1.  Everyone says it's already started.  This was the supposed schedule for the beginning of the show.

13:05 ~ heidi.
13:20 ~ TOKYO YANKEES
13:35 ~ LADIES ROOM

People mentioned this yesterday, because I think it might have been announced at yesterday's concert (though I'm not sure), but I was completely confused, because I don't remember TOKYO YANKEES or LADIES ROOM being on the set list (I missed when they were added, apparently).  Apparently a last minute change was made in respect to start time, if I understand what's going on correctly.  I wish there was a live broadcast so someone could tell me if this is really what's going on, though.

This was announced earlier as a planned start for the live, though I haven't seen it from an official source, and I haven't gotten any updates from anyone actually at the concert as to who is performing, but several people say it has started, though people are still entering the venue.  So I don't know if this is actually the order in which it is transpiring.

I'm rather confused, so if anyone else is watching any other Japanese message boards and can clear this up, I'd appreciate it.

I found it confirmed on a different forum that the live did indeed start around 1.  I didn't see mention of heidi., though I'd assume they did perform first.  Tokyo Yankees started at 13:24.  LADIES ROOM started at 13:41.

No news besides that except that a lot of people are mentioning that they're still on trains and buses on their way to the venue, and some have missed the bands they wanted to see.  The earlier start time is kind of unfortunate, I guess.

Who told you where X was supposed to be in the lineup? Because everyone I've heard from thinks they will be last.

My Tokyo forecast says it's raining right now, but I haven't heard from anyone about the weather, so I don't know.

The seats are more filled than yesterday, which means, as I suspected, that more people came to today's live than yesterday's.

And heidi. was indeed first.

One of the bands has performed "Tell Me," but I'm not quite sure which band it was.  I'll get back to you if I'm able to figure it out.

Now is Dir en grey, supposedly.

This is an approximate set list based on when people have been saying certain bands began.  I may be a few minutes off on any of them, but again, these are approximations.  It sounds as if they started about five minutes late (or else heidi. ran a little longer than anticipated).
1. heidi. (~13:10)
2. TOKYO YANKEES (~13:25)
3. LADIES ROOM (~13:40)
4. Dir en grey (~14:05)

There are still vacant seats, but apparently fewer than yesterday, as I mentioned from someone in an earlier post.  Apparently, during Dir en grey's set, the audience started actually getting more into it.

From what people are saying, it seems that Dir en grey performed the X Japan version of "Miscast" (or someone did.  The Japanese tendency to drop subjects is really troublesome in some of these posts).

And Kyo cut himself, apparently.  But from all that everyone's saying, Dir en grey is performing very well, and the crowd is very into it.

And I don't think it's actually raining, thankfully.  Someone mentioned that it's cloudy, but hot.

Apparently, Dir en grey played "Miscast" from about 14:35 to 14:46.  No idea how they made the song that long, or maybe someone was just delayed in mentioning the song had ended.

Kyo switched from cutting his chest to scratching the inside of his mouth, a.k.a. the fishooking that grosses me out. ^.^

No pictures--those probably won't come out until tomorrow.

People are definitely more into it than yesterday.  I've seen two or three separate posts calling Dir en grey gods, so they must have done something great, which surprises me considering what I've seen and heard about at recent concerts.  :?

Dir en grey seems to have finished some time between 14:55 and 15:00.    I don't know who's on now.  No one has mentioned yet, except that a lot of people have gone outside to smoke now that Dir en grey is done.

Someone also said that their appearance is a little different than usual (though this could just because of Kaoru's recent hair cut and Die's darkening and lengthening of his hair, and his recent trend of putting it in a ponytail), but they're still "kakkoi."  :D

Does anyone have any more information? Who's up now?

No one is posting about anything, anymore, for whatever reason, so I have no idea what's been happening since Dir en grey ended.  I don't know what forums specifically darkcat21 was watching yesterday, or I'd go take a look at those, too.

All I know is that it's rumored that X JAPAN will be playing at 6 p.m. (18:00) and I also heard yesterday that LUNA SEA is scheduled for 4 or 4:30 p.m. (16:00 or 16:30).  Reports on the second conflict.

Quote from: "Hollywood"
It does, and thanks (no need to be sorry). Smile I've lost track of them somewhat lately and am not really up-to-date on their present-day stuff, but I like them, one of my favorite old Extasy bands.
(The reason I asked about who's singing is because their vocalist Umemura died last year.)

I figured there was a reason you must have been asking, because one of the Japanese fans had asked precisely the same question.  Thanks for filling me in.  :)

verisimilitude said its rumored that Luna Sea will play at 4:30, and X-japan at 6:00, and it was said before that both bands might have long sets, and its rumored that X-japan are playing last if all that's true then Luna Sea and X-japan will be the last bands to perform, so no Luna Sea probably aren't up yet, there are still 4 other bands who havn't performed yet.

LUNA SEA hasn't started yet, but people think that they're going to be next.  However, I have no real indication of who is up now.

THE UNDERNEATH performed sometime after Dir en grey, but there might have been another band, too.  I'm not sure at this point, but I asked who was after Dir en grey, and the only answer anyone managed to give me was THE UNDERNEATH. I doubt they've played this entire time, however.

I'll let you all know when I hear more.

EDIT: OBLIVION DUST is on right now.

I highly, HIGHLY doubt that will be possible, since the broadcast they're doing isn't live like the X JAPAN concerts was.  I don't know who could possibly be filming it and uploading it live.  Don't get your hopes up.  The chances of that are so low that I'd round them down to zero.

DJ OZMA always wears that style of wig. He just turned it red in homage to hide, probably.  Either way, I agree that it was kind of in bad taste.

I wouldn't put too much credence on this, but in one of the mixi communities, someone said they saw Taiji--not onstage, I'm sure.  I hugely question the credibility of this one, unless I see it confirmed somewhere else, but I thought I would mention it.

Other than that, lots of people seem fit to mention that the bathroom line is very long.   :?  I wish they'd talk about the live, lol.

EDIT: My girlfriend just emailed and said that MUCC played before D'espairsRay.  And that Kyo hurt himself onstage a lot, and badly.

The Kyo part, you mean?  It's what it seemed like, from the mixi posts, too.  All anyone could mention was that Kyo was bleeding, and it's what every post said for about 25 minutes.  Apparently, he cut his chest a lot, and then started fishhooking.  Pretty standard Kyo self-mutilation, if not terribly usual for a Japanese audience, in recent memory.

Yes.  I'd be going, too, but I planned a trip back to America before I knew the lives would be taking place.  She's writing me a live report, which already exceeds 12 pages.

As to Kyo, I couldn't say for sure.  He's done it a zillion times in front of both foreign and Japanese crowds, and while he's kind of shied away from self-mutilation onstage in Japan in recent memory, he has been known to do it (at the end of the last tour, at Shinkiba, I believe, he did it).  I personally think it's a bit in bad taste, considering the topic of this whole event is supposed to be a memorial to someone who is dead, but hey, it's Kyo's choice.

I don't think they'll perform without you, they specifically said, no sad songs, a completely fun event with nothing sad, so I don't think Without You will fit that, I'm imagining Toshi singing Misery though, well, Misery is sort of sad but, not like Without You is.

hide had tattoos and piercings. So did Taiji. So did Pata. I'm sure Heath has some too.

You can take your anti-body-modification bullshit and fucking shove it. Miyavi is a beautiful being inside and out, and a true visual kei. . .

Different from the other bands, you mean?  I assume they all used their own drum kit, and the only reason for the lack of lag between artists is because they alternated between bands on the main stage and the small stages.  But because both LUNA SEA and X JAPAN are performing on the main stage, they need to take a break to break down LUNA SEA's equipment and set up X JAPAN's.

Toshi is a good guitarist, but singing and playing at that level would be extremely difficult. We aren't talking normal rhythm guitar here, we're talking Patas parts if Pata takes over hide's... And Pata's parts aren't a piece of cake, especially when you're singing too...

I think it would be a bit too much at the very end of a tribute concert for Hide, the last thing you do, is announce who Hide's getting replaced by.

Aewsome pic Darkcat, I hope you upload more.

Awesome pic indeed. :D

And it's not a replacement: Yoshiki has already said that hide is a permanent, irreplaceable member and that the new guitarist will be the sixth member of the band.

By the way, it looks like Sugizo is confirmed as one of the guitarists for Paris.

This is what I can make up: First part is pretty random: Yoshiki jumps on Toshi's back, falls, Toshi comments he's getting heavier and etc. (the usual jazz)

Then they say a new concert has been decided. There's something about Tokyo Dome, appearently because people asked for them to perform there again. They also mention Taiwan but I don0t understand if it's decided or just a possibility.

If 2ch is to be believed, they're performing X with TMR on vocals, Yoshiki on guitar, the members of Spread Beaver and MUCC doing God knows what, and I believe Luna Sea and X Japan, too.

Then again, they also said Dynamite Tommy showed up onstage, and I'm hoping that's a joke.

It's probably in one of those halls. Football field is about 10000 sqm so you could easily fit 20000 people in almost any of those halls since their size is way over a size of a football field.

Oh, this needs to be in normal-sized font!

It seems now that he was in the audience (according to Dynamite Tommy's blog), but still: he fucking better have been invited to perform.  If he was invited and declined, that's fine; when I imagine myself in his position, I can think of a LOT of reasons not to go.  (Naturally, I'm not Taiji, so I have no idea if he thinks the same way-- but if I were in his position, and had been invited, I doubt I would have gone.)

But Taiji had better have been invited.

And whether the absence of Taiji's bands was Taiji's decision or Yoshiki's, the end result is that Taiji and X Japan seem to well and truly have gone their separate ways, and I think it's a pretty safe assumption that Taiji and Yoshiki are not likely bosom buddies.  I doubt we'll see Taiji involve himself with X Japan in the foreseeable future, and frankly, that's just fine with me.

So... eh.  Yeah, I still have mixed feelings about this whole thing too.  But nonetheless, thanks to all you guys for the updates!

Oh yeah, and since people were asking about George-- I would guess it's George from Ladies Room (a.k.a. Sex George), since if it were Screaming Mad George, they probably would have said "Screaming Mad George".  That's how it used to be anyway.

Here are a few more assorted facts about the live:
- Gackt purchased a giant arrangement of flowers for everyone, as well as a separate bouquet just for Sugizo.  Cure magazine, ESP, etc. also bought flowers for the live.
 - The Underneath covered "Doubt".
- LADIES ROOM destroyed some instruments.
- D'espairsRay's reception was only lukewarm, but they played well.
- There was no hide intro to "Scars" when X JAPAN played it, but the screens flickered right before, went to black, and everyone hesitated like it was meant to be there, and had just malfunctioned.
- OBLIVION DUST might have covered "Genkai Haretsu," but I'm told that it was so terrible that it's hard to tell if that's what they were actually playing.
- Part of X JAPAN's MC consisted of Toshi telling Yoshiki he should talk more to the crowd, and Yoshiki pointedly protesting that they didn't need to hear him.
- X JAPAN also supposedly mentioned California, but whether or not they will go is still unconfirmed.
- When Sugizo was onstage playing "I.V.," people were screaming for hide.
- "Pink Spider" did begin with a piano arranged intro, and then Yoshiki was brought the infamous yellow heart guitar and played the rest of it on guitar.
- Tatsurou did do some vocals during the Muteki Band's "X," singing the bridge.
- At the end, they brought out all the giant plushies, and all the members of X JAPAN stood behind their plushies and made them bow.

More random facts, since I was asked:
- This has already been reported in multiple Diru live reports, but Kyo has two new tattoos.  I might be able to look them up if people don't know, but at the moment, I can't recall what they are.
- Near the end of Diru's set (during The IIID EMPIRE), Toshiya's bass strap broke, so he played with his bass sitting on the ground.
- Kyo started pounding the mic against his head during "Dead Tree," and fishooking and cutting.
- Kyo's underwear were red. :D
- Tsukasa of D'espairsRay seemed to get the most cheers, though like I mentioned their reception wasn't great.
- MUCC's MC apparently entailed Tatsurou talking about his feet, and because he was not wearing shoes, he got strange feelings from his feet.
- MUCC brought out a second guitarist to play "DICE," but I don't know at this point who it was.  Has this been posted already?
- The Heyx3 clip they showed during the section with hide clips was the one with hide teasing Yoshiki about liking McDonalds breakfast food.
- The Last Live clip they showed was hide talking after the Last Live.
- "Without You" had a long piano section in the middle, and Yoshiki was, of course, crying.
- During "ENDLESS RAIN," Yoshiki just hunched over his piano and sobbed at the end, and Toshi closed it a capella.
- X JAPAN again tried to teach the fans the English lyrics they were supposed to sing to "I.V." and still failed.  Toshi tried to make Yoshiki sing them, and Yoshiki protested.  Sugizo over-dramatically sang said lyrics (I'm imagining a la 3.30 live).
- During "Pink Spider," there were pillars of flame.
- I've heard that one of the S.E. tracks at the end (when the plushie was out) was actually "Say Anything").

I believe this is all I'll have.

Quite a few Japanese fans agree, and are kind of angry at Kyo for having done so.  A lot of people started leaving and/or sitting down when Kyo started cutting.  Sitting down is NEVER a good sign at a multiband live.  It means that band has lost your interest/support.

Hmm, I don't think it was 100% in poor taste-- at least, I think it was in better taste than what I saw in the DJ OZMA photos. :P
Haven't seen photos of what Kyo did, but in my opinion if you invite Dir en grey to play at an event, you pretty much have to expect that kind of thing, since that's part of their show.  I can see where, from Kyo's perspective, that might be Kyo's idea of giving his all and putting on an especially intense performance in hide's honor.  That's admittedly a pretty twisted way of honoring someone (if that was indeed his intention), but hey, to each his own.

And if it's not too much trouble, I'm curious about those new tattoos he has.  But if it's too much trouble then don't bother yourself with it-- I'm not a huge fan or anything, but I like tattoos and am always curious to see what tattoos other people get.

The thing is, though, Kyo doesn't usually cut at shows in Japan anymore.  He did it ONCE last tour.  It's more an overseas thing, so people weren't really prepared, and I think self-mutilation is kind of in bad taste at an event that's supposed to be a celebration of someone's life, especially someone who is speculated by some to have taken his own life.

Also, not everyone there was a Dir en grey fan.  Most people were there to see X JAPAN and Luna Sea, honestly, which makes me even a little more irked by Kyo doing what he did.  At a Dir show, it's one thing, but on top of the fact that this was not a oneman, where people basically sign up with the expectation that they might see something like that, a lot of people brought their children to this.  :?

I will agree, though, that DJ OZMA's performance was....yeah. x.x

I could only track down a description of one of Kyo's two new tattoos.  It's a hooded skull, apparently, but I'm not precisely sure where it is.  :?  Possibly on his upper chest?

EDIT: More pictures (I can't post direct links yet--sorry)

That's actually part of what makes me wonder if from his perspective, it was some kind of... "special occasion" thing.
Though I do understand what you're saying about self-mutilation being rather questionable at a memorial to someone who may have been a suicide, and in a general sense I completely agree-- though, to me at least, it becomes more of a gray area when I consider how many of the songs that hide played (especially with X) dealt with violent themes.  "I slice my face, covered with blue blood..."  I wouldn't go so far as to call it a fitting tribute or something, and I'm still not entirely thrilled with it, it's just that I think I "get" why Kyo might have done it.

Well, to be perfectly honest, I don't know why Dir en grey was even invited in the first place, since as far as I know they have nothing to do with hide.  I'd much rather have seen Glay play in their place, because Glay started out on Extasy and all that.  Or a Zi:Kill reunion, or some Saver Tiger guys, or Screaming Mad George, or... etc.  So I don't blame Dir en grey, they were just being themselves, but they were a strange choice of band to invite.
And if people brought their kids-- even without Dir en grey that's a pretty bad idea.  X and hide songs are full of stuff that's really not kid-appropriate.  (Well, to be honest I'm totally against the notion of kids at rock shows anyway... ruins the atmosphere. :P)

Oh, and thanks for the description of one of those tattoos!

@ Hollywood

well I think Dir en grey were still a better choice than TMR for example... I mean Dir en grey were obviously inspired a lot by hide (Kyo kept copying his styles) and Kaoru is famous for being a big hide fan himself.
then they got produced by Yoshiki back in the 90's so there's at least SOME connection.

I guess it must've been the greatest for Diru to play for hide... since most of them were big X and hide fans...

about the kids and hide's lyrics... well at his solo concerts there were usually some kids on stage... seems the japanese don't care so much about violence and sex in the lyrics  8)

Oh yeah, I agree Dir en grey makes more sense than TMR at least.  But they, like a lot of the bands, have a whole lot more to do with Yoshiki than with hide, while there are TONS of more-hide-related bands that were left out.  But that's what I thought from the moment I first saw the band lineup, so that's nothing new...

And that's true about kids at hide concerts.  Well, if the parents are OK with their kids seeing/hearing that, then that's fine, everyone should make their own decisions (though I still hate when little kids go to concerts).  I just think that if you bring your kids to see Band A, which is known for violent and sexual content, you don't have a lot of room to complain about the violent or sexual content of Band B who is playing at the same concert. :P

Post by: matsumoto on May 04, 2008, 10:21:34 PM
To be honest, I think there were too many bands in this summit. When that happens, fans tend to get a bit bored because there's a lot of discordance in tastes. People who like TMR might not like Dir en grey at all. In my humble opinion they'd better have done this in only one day, with X Japan, Luna Sea, Spread Beaver and few more, only things that were 100% related to hide.

As for the Kyo cutting; honestly, what a bad taste. Just like verisimilitude said, performing self muttilation in a show that's supposed to celebrate the life of a man who is rumoured to have taken his own life... oh, seriously. It's decadent, if not to say a bit disrespectful.

DJOZMA annoys me a bit as well. First because of the lack of connection to hide and second because his show was visually reminiscient of some sort of gay, exhibitionist parade. I know that kind of silliness was hide's style and all but please... that stripping to yellow-hearted shorts was a bit off.

Anyway, I'm glad everyone was happy, at least. I had feared this would turn out another mourning, dramatically emotive concert.

A one day show with:
X-Japan
Luna Sea
Spread Beaver
Ladies Room
Tokyo Yankees
Dir en grey(even though I don't like them that much, but they were signed to Extasy and were friends with hide so...)
Invincible Band

THAT would have been perfect in my book 8)

Btw,Versailles and Phantasmagoria rule so I'm more than ok with their presence there :D

One more tidbit, not about the bands, particularly, but I thought people might want to know.  I saw it mentioned on mixi last night, but I wasn't precisely sure what had happened, so I didn't want to report on it and confuse anyone.  I had it confirmed today, though, so I thought I'd mention.

Last night, during Dir en grey's "OBSCURE," a fan passed out, apparently from shock (that's how it's being talked about, anyway), presumably from some combination of the "OBSCURE" PV in the background and Kyo's cutting in the previous song.  This fan was taken away in an ambulance last night, and no one is precisely sure of their current medical condition.

At the start of the X-japan playing Pink Spider video, the first time Toshi shouts Pink Spider to start the song, near the very end of the shout he suddently loses the growl sound, and amazingly he sounded exactly like he did in 1986, it happens at 2:05 in the video.

Very good.

Hopefully the rest of the brodcast surfaces over the next few days. Has the other three performances during the summit I was looking forward to seeing.

Anyone have any idea how long the brodcast was? And they need to try to release DVDs from these shows (and the March X shows) worldwide so I can actually buy them and feel better. I'm starting to feel bad about downloading all these, but can't resist the urge to do so. :P

EDIT:
Just found Spread Beaver's (http://mullemeck.serveftp.org/jps_beta/?page=details&id=44583) and Luna Sea's (http://mullemeck.serveftp.org/jps_beta/?pa...etails&id=44585) sets. The links don't seem to be working, but it might just be temporary. At least I sure hope so. If those two eventually work all I'll need to do is find Dir en grey's set, and I'll be good. Wooo.

Did you all notice how Toshi because of all the screaming during X finally gets back to his "rusty" way of singing. This is awesome. At first he sounds pretty weak, compared to Ryuichi who is doing a great job on X, never thought that his voice would suit this song, but it does. Nishimura too.

overall, a great performance and truly a summit. and a great tribute to hide.

sidenote: During Pink Spider it looks to me as if YOSHIKI felt almost about singing, but the didnt. ^_^

I haven't seen any Summit footage yet but they used to do that back in the day before Taiji left X, the intro of Dead Angle (not Angel   ) used to be the intro to the live version of X.

The one on JPS is a larger file size, so it's a pretty safe bet that that's the one with the better quality.

They apparently broadcast more than originally announced, because I've found heidi. and D'espairsRay footage as well.  Hrm.

There's a pretty complete setlist on TheOtherEast (http://theothereast.com/?p=373) (the Dir en grey set list is missing "REPETITION OF HATRED"), and you can also find one at the very end of each of the hide memorial day features in the Special Features (http://musicjapanplus.jp/specialfeatures/) section of the Music JAPAN+ website.

Here's one song from Versailles' performance  :D

That's the same song as already posted. :D

It's pretty much a longstanding tradition among visual and sort-of-visual bands, I guess you could say (but I think you knew that or you wouldn't have asked :P).  I'm guessing it started for taboo or shock value purposes, and/or because the uniforms look smart and intimidating.

I hope Heath is careful with that when X Japan goes overseas though.  As far as I can tell it seems pretty much accepted in Japan as part of visual/rock'n'roll costuming, but it could REALLY give overseas fans the wrong idea about the band.

Oh yeah, and if Tokyo Yankees' Ace of Spades every shows up on youtube, I want to see that too!

a thank you Hollywood :)
It was kinda confusion, also seeing bands like Rommel and Mein Kampf but if you put it like that, its kinda like (I believe it was) Johnny Rottens shirt with a crooked cross on it. just to shock people and not to like show people his political opinion.
and I do hope Heath is more carefull overseas too.

No problem. :)

Yeah, exactly like that-- I mean, who knows, maybe there is some rock musician somewhere in Japan who wears that stuff and actually agrees with the politics of it.  But in general I think it's just a shock or image thing.

I really wish people would get over the 'uniform=nazi (uniform)' idea...they weren't the only ones wearing uniforms like that, you know? And skulls and eagles have both been part of Heath's image for a very long time (if not from the very beginning) :)

But as we know (and Hollywood said) Japanese (visual) musicians have always wanted to shock and have used many 'taboo' subjects to do that. Even so, as far as I've seen, Heath's outfit is far from being nazi...Maybe I missed something, though...
yes, you clearly missed something, as you can see, on his collar he has a SS Death Skull, only used by the elite of the SS, he has a crooked cross with the eagle above it on his hat.
his jacket is just a white uniform. so its clearly a nazi uniform.
Now, if he want to wear it, thats fine by me but I dont want people to get the wrong idea about X Japan.
By the way, I do like Heath, dont get me wrong (though Taiji was better XD)

I don't think it's just a japanese visual music thing. It's a very japanese thing overall. I don't know if it has anything to do with the second world war, but us Germans were allied with the Japanese... it was like us with the Italians against the whole world (Axis of Evil, anyone?)
After America opened Japan quite cruelly after WW2, dooming their traditions as pervert (geishas etc.) and forcing the American lifestyle upon them, I think that the Japanese still have a more positive image of the Nazis than any other country in the world.
On the other hand, Japan was always pretty fond of the old German ways of living: order, discipline and accuracy. They actually lived for the same ideals and still do. AND Heath stated that he has a friend and Germany and would love to come here again soon (so I guess he's pretty fond of this country)

If you look at the whole anime/manga AND music scene, the Nazi uniform appears again and again. Yeah, it is by now a part of the goth-style, but many manga are actually Nazi themed (which usually resembles a very strict military regime of awfully goodlooking guys who use the lower ranked ss soldiers as sex-slaves... )
I think if this style actually has a message, I guess it's a more historical thing (since they have more positive connection to Nazi-Germany than any of the Allied countries) than something about political orientation.
I don't think anyone in Japan wearing those is fascist   I guess basically they just think it's damn cool and stylish for guys to wear it.

conclusion: I as German myself, who is not fond of the Nazis or any of that (especially not was going on at the moment) think that Japanese using the Nazi uniforms is something completely different. It's basically used to look good on guys (and sadly it does)

The wearing of Nazi-symbols by rock-musicians is not only a japanese thing, also american musicans wore/wear these things, because they want to shock/think it looks good/just don't give a shit....

hm possible, I thought of the Axis back then being called evil already.

Anyway, I wanted to stress, that wearing those uniforms in Japan is not as controversal as it is in Europe or America. Where people did it, of course too. (Prince Harry  :) )

I'm no expert on Nazis-- I know about them of course, but I haven't had any extra classes about them-- but even I easily recognize those symbols.  That eagle of course (can't see from the photo, but when it's that eagle in that pose, the thing it's holding is a swastika), that particular skull... and if those aren't obvious enough, he's even got a red armband. :P  The style of his jacket looks Nazi too.

I think that the use of Nazi insignia is a sensative issue to the world, not just Germany. Lots of people's families the world over were torn apart in the second world war, mine included, so I think that German people who are particularly sensative about the issue need to think a little more broadly about it. I'm fine with it's use, it's meant to shock people and its nothing new to X - Toshi wore plenty of Nazi-looking-stuff back in the early 90's.

What Nazi-looking stuff did Toshi wear?  I'm not saying you're wrong, just don't remember seeing it.

Personally yeah, I'm fine with its use too-- like you said, it's meant to shock people (and it does).  And while I'm no Nazi, at all, I must admit they're some pretty smart-looking uniforms.

Heath's uniform was probably done for looks more than anything, as I recall Heath has a habit of constantly changing his style.

I do recall Sugizo (Who is probably one of the most liberal, anti-war, anti racist musicians that I can think of) actually wearing a leather Nazi uniform from a video I viewed quite awhile ago. Again it was done for looks more than anything.

Besides that when has X ever tried to convey a political message?

Germans who react sensitive to Nazi uniform do so because they are annoyed with the German=Nazi thing. There are still many ignorant poeple who know nothing or hardly anything about the Third Reich, believe that Hitler is still alive, greet Germans with "Nazi/Hitler" and think Germans don't have a sense of humour due to events that have happened 60 years ago. Hell, lately the only time when Germans went out and swung the German flag proudly was during the FIFA Worldcup. If you're a patriot in Germany, you automatically are considered a Nazi, of course Germans react sensitive to the uniform.

I don't think Japanese musicians wearing the uniforms if that shocking anymore, though, they should try something new, I say Blackface is a safe choice.

Yeah, Ferret is right ... The whole nazi thing is just annoying.
I mean, in france some people called out "Heil Hitler" when they noticed, we were Germans. In England our host family said we should better not go out on Helloween since Germans are not gladly seen there and they were frightened someone could do something to us <_< ... we are unpopular abroad because of our history and this just sucks. e_è

And when I see people wearing a nazi uniform ... I dunno ... I'm aware of the fact that it's mostly just for being "trendy", "looking cool", whatever ... But there is automatically an assoziation seeing this clothes. Also if the musician doesn't have any political ambitions.

I am a bit sensitive in this matter, too. XD; I just don't feel comfortable seeing clothes like this worn ... but okay, if they want to ...
I can't really express it better .__.

Gladly, I haven't gotten insulted like that so far. But usually if I get to talk to an american and say that I'm german I get a "heil hitler lol" or something...

Well I don't really mind Japanese artists wearing those uniforms. I actually like it that some people on this world found something positive about our history (good looks :P) and don't hate us for that.
I think Japan is the country that hates us the least for what happened here  :D

Anyway, I'm sick of the Germans accusing other Germans being Nazis when you show some patriotism. I love my country and I like the people here, even though I get angry with them a lot and I'm not... well proud about that part of the history, but I'm proud that the german states are finally united and I'm proud of our achievements.

And I have a BIG German flag due to the Fifa Worldcup and will gladly put it out of my window during the european cup as well  :)

I can say on behalf of the English people that I think your host family were over-reacting. I for one was out on Halloween a group of friends which included German exchange students without any incident. In my experience the English only tend to bring up the second world war for comedic effect, such as the recent issues surrounding comments that Jeremy Clarkeson from Top Gear made. The German people are valued kindly in England as sporting rivals, any animosity and prejudice tends to come from the older generations  who lived through the war and of course the inevitable ignorant pigs.

There was actually a Buddhist symbol that looked like a reverse swastika, and I think it represented something like the cycle of life. The Nazis just flipped that around and changed its meaning. So that might have something to do with why the symbol is so popular in Japan. o.o

And I don't see any swastika-like symbols on Heath's outfit in that picture by the way. o.o

Edit-
Taken from Wikipedia:

Quote
The symbol as it is used in Buddhist art and scripture is known in Japanese as a manji (literally, "the character for eternality" 萬字), and represents Dharma, universal harmony, and the balance of opposites. When facing left, it is the omote (front) manji, representing love and mercy. Facing right, it represents strength and intelligence, and is called the ura (rear) manji. Balanced manji are often found at the beginning and end of Buddhist scriptures (outside India).

it was used way before the Nazi's
what Im trying to say, the Nazi's ruïned the rep. of some innocent symbols.
By the way, it wasnt my intention to start a whole discussion about this nor was it to question a political message in X's music. (yeah, I  know they dont have one.)
