wow that's new.... even in the documentary interview when he was asked by Kijak he said he could not imagine himself as a father because he still felt like he was still a child. Interesting change of heart in 3 years!

Oh, really? Did Yoshiki say that in the documentary? I watched it several times but I don’t remember.

MC 1 : Why did you publish this?
HIDE : I wanted to visualize what I like more than X without implicit consent.
MC 1 : Then, Did you want to show “Actually I have this world of visuals.”?

MC 1 : Good! Have you considered all of these titles by yourself? This is the key. Why is this a key theme?
HIDE : I put the poem from the story later.
MC 1 : Ah, you didn’t take photos as a theme of key, but you titled “key” later. This is not a mere photo book. I feel that every photo is art.
HIDE : Thank you. 
​MC 2 : There are many genres that transcend the borders, and it really feels like a masterpiece.
MC 1 : Don’t you draw a picture?
HIDE : I do. But something like children’s pictures.

​HIDE : I’ve been thinking about it since I started the band.

HIDE : I was a hairdresser.​

HIDE : From March 24th to March 27th, there will be solo exhibition of Hideo Kanno(菅野秀夫), who took photos, at Yamano Musical Instrument(山野楽器) in Ginza(銀座).

I liked it when he had his hair long, but I like his current style too.
I think the reason why he cut it was because it was too heavy on his neck after he, you know, broke it. Plus, I think it's easier to manage when short.

That's a misconception, he did not break his neck he had a herniated disc. I think the haircut has to do with Toshi suddenly changing his hair to short black, under the influence of Masaya who was displeased with his "rotten look". Since Toshi changed his style (hair and clothes) drastically, the band had to tone it down a little, otherwise it would have looked awkward on stage.

The date Yoshiki had his hair cut and the reason are not clear.



This CM was taken in the summer of 1995. And Dahlia tour starts in November of that year. Yoshiki may have his hair cut before Toshl did.

1. (0:00~4:44) Opening 

MCs go to the restaurant that Yoshiki usually goes to. Yoshiki is waiting for them there. They talk about the restaurant, Yoshiki's wine and Sirloin steak, etc. 



2. (4:44~6:07) Neck Surgery

Yoshiki says he can't be accustomed to the artificial intervertebral disc. His other intervertebral discs are worn out as well. Once he plays the drums again, he'll have to undergo surgery again. His medical doctor said he has to stop playing drums completely. But Yoshiki says he can't stop it.



3. (6:07~ ) Yoshiki's personal information

When X debuted, Yoshiki's personal information was confidential. Age, place of birth, family name and  everything were marked "X". But, Yoshiki said he and Toshl were classmates in school, and Toshl's personal information was not secret. So Yoshiki's personal information became revealed automatically.



4. (7:47~ ) KISS and the drums

Yoshiki went to the KISS concert and became interested in the drums.

MC : Why drums? Usually boys are interested in guitars or vocals, not drums.
 
Yoshiki : I had been playing the trumpet. But playing a trumpet did not fit me due to asthma. I needed something to beat. Several years after I started playing the drums, my mother told me that father's future dream was to become a drummer.

MC : Your mother would have been surprised whey you began playing the drums.

Yoshiki : Definitely.



5. (9:00~ ) Yoshiki's legendary "spicy curry" and "hot shower" episodes

They talk about stories you should have listened to many times unless you are new to X Japan. But HIDE's reaction about the "spicy curry happening" was something I've never heard before.   


(13:25~ )
Yoshiki left Tokyo Dome during rehearsal, because he had spicy curry.

MC : What did other X members say when you left?
Yoshiki : I walked across the place where other members were rehearsing. Every member never thought I'd really leave. (But I really did leave.) HIDE called me later.

HIDE : What happened?
YOSHIKI : Curry was spicy.
HIDE : Then... it can not be helped.

MCs : (laughing) He is too sweet.



6. (14:49) First appearance on Kouhaku in 1991
 
MC : Weren't there any resistance to appearing on Kouhaku? Didn't you worry about appearing on kouhaku may ruin the metal bands' (rebellious) image?   

YOSHIKI : I was very happy when we were invited to Kouhaku. I'd been treated as a kind of social outcast. I felt as if I couldn't gain recognition from mother and relatives no matter what I do. But when I said "Mom, I will appear on Kouhaku", my mom was very happy.

MC : You are a good boy.

(Everyone laughs)

YOSHIKI : HIDE was the same. HIDE's mother was also happy when she heard X would appear on Kouhaku.

MC : Yoshiki has a rocker's violent image and a very good person's image at the same time.

MC 2 : Did you feel such as "Yes, I did it!"

YOSHIKI : Yes, I felt like "I did it! Finally!".



7. (16:30~) HYDE(L'Arc-en-Ciel) reveals Yoshiki's truth
 
MC conveys HYDE's words.

HYDE : "Yoshiki's perfectionism is overkill. He says the new album will be released soon, but there had been no new album for over 20 years.(everyone laughs) If he records for decades, the sound recorded at the beginning and that of the latest do not match. So he has to fix the sound which is recorded decades ago. His album looks like Antoni Gaudi's Sagrada Familia."

MC : Because it is never finished.

YOSHIKI : Right. Hyde is right. But I wonder why artists should release an album every year or once every 2 years. If I wanted to make money, I would have chosen another job. I love classical music. I want to create music that future generations listen to. I'd like to pour effort into making masterpieces that will survives for over 100 years, not into releasing new albums every year.

MC : How many years did it take?

YOSHIKI : More than 20 years.

(everybody laughs)

MC : You'd better ask your mother.



8. (18:25~ ) date, girlfriend, marriage

MC : Were you popular?

YOSHIKI : Absolutely. (everyone laughs) In addition, it is not the past tense.

MC : He "is" popular now.

MC 2 : What's your standard of being popular?

YOSHIKI : I don't know about the standard but I think I'm popular anyway.

MC : Do you have an ideal type?

YOSHIKI : Not really. 

MC : "feeling" seems to be important for you.

YOSHIKI : I'm totally immersed in music, so I wish someone understands it.

MC : I can't imagine how you date.

YOSHIKI : I do it ordinarily. 

MC : I don't think you would disguise yourself when you date.

YOSHIKI : No, cause I live overseas.

MC : Do you have a girlfriend now?

YOSHIKI : I'll leave it to your imagination.

MC : You are a bachelor, right?

YOSHIKI : Yes, for now. 

MC : Do you desire to get married?

YOSHIKI : Yes.

(everyone is surprised)

MC : What's the purpose of marriage?

YOSHIKI : I want to have babies and make a happy family.

(everyone is surprised)




9. (21:30~ ) Toshl's dropping out of X Japan and disbandment in 1997


MC : You'd have been very painful around that time.

YOSHIKI : Yes.

MC : Did you feel Toshl was strange?

YOSHIKI : Yes, very strongly. When Toshl said he will leave X, I felt it was hopeless.   

MC : Was his facial expression different?

YOSHIKI : We've been friends since we're in kindergarten, and he was not Toshl I used to knew. Toshl is a very pure and smart person. When pure and smart Toshl says he's going to quit, there must be the reason. We'd been successful in Japan. We were a big star in Japan. But we were nothing in the USA. It was the first wall we faced. We couldn't even speak English. We, including me, all got lost. We felt the severe pressure. Other members may be not so enthusiastic about US debut, but I forced them to follow me. Therefore, I think Toshl's tragedy is my fault in some degree.

MC : Didn't you persuade Toshl not to leave the band?

YOSHIKI : In some respects, I desired to leave the band as well. I knew something strange happened to Toshl, but I was also exhausted at that time.



10. (28:24~ ) Sedona

YOSHIKI : Recently, I went to Sedona when I'm exhausted. There is a vortex and native shamans. I spent a lot of time with shamans there. I went there many times. One day, I thought "Am I OK?" (everyone laughs) I called Toshl and asked, "Am I OK?" I asked Toshl for advice, because Toshl is a specialist in brainstorming. (everyone laughs) Toshl answered,

"You are OK so far."

I think Toshl was the the most talkative member of early X. If you watch variety shows in 80's, you will find that Yoshiki, Hide and Taiji don't talk much. They have just rebellious expression on their faces. Pata looks sullen(like he does these days on TV). Toshl was the only member who was friendly and talkative.

Hide is so adorable, carrying his cell phone in 1993. He's an early adoper.

"hime(姫)" means princess in Japanese. If you listen carefully, you can hear the pronunciation.

This is a video taken in May 1993 for Film Gig. All X members look happy in this video. I wrote down all the conversations because I was curious to know what they are talking about. I’d like to share it with someone curious about their conversation like me of the past.





(in front of Toshl’s house)

TOSHI : Where would you go? Everyone, I’m Toshl from X. I’m going to show each member’s house as a present for fans today. To begin with, this is my house. Feel free to come in.

(in the house)

I live here. But as a vocalist, I stay at the studio almost all day long. Cause this is the period to record vocal now. I’m doing my best to be delivered to everyone as soon as possible. Then, I’m going to member’s houses at once. Let’s go!

(in the car)

I think I came around Hide’s house. Ah? Isn’t he Hide? Hide is over there!

(walking)

I saw the appearance of Hide, but why is he in such a place? HIDE! Ha Ha Ha. I’m going over there right now.

(In the corridor)

It is noisy because of that vacuum cleaner. Can you hear my voice? Can you hear it? You can hear it.
Hide was in a veranda just before.

(knock)

HIDE : You can’t come in on your shoes.
TOSHI : What happened in your room? (Hide comes out)
These are staffs of Film Gig. Hide, you didn’t say hello to everyone.
HIDE : Oh, hi!

TOSHI : Here is it. This is the princess’s house. This is the quite strict place. We can hardly enter the house. (grabbing the handle of the door) Key! Well, if you do something stupid, policeman comes right away.
HIDE : I got it, I got the number.
TOSHI : You got the number?
HIDE : On my mobile phone.
TOSHI : What?
HIDE : With this, with my mobile phone.
TOSHI : Can you open the door with this?
HIDE : Open up!

(in the house)

TOSHI : Wow. This is princess’s house. This is the moment we enter.

(pointing to the sword)

TOSHI : Is this real?
HIDE : It must be real.

(pointing to the violin)

TOSHI : He started to learn violin.
HIDE : Oh, really?
TOSHI : Yes, he let me listen to his playing recently.

(pointing to the piano)

The princess has even a pool. By the way, recently, here, (Pata is pushing Toshl into the pool) Dangerous! It is dangerous! In the mean time, hey, do you remember the CD? We gave the CD to everyone. We recorded the interviews in Japan. But Yoshiki’s interview was recorded here. 
HIDE : Who interviewed him?

Is the concerns regarding Heath and Yoshiki to do with the management issues/Heath potentially leaving the band in 2009?

There are a lot of rumors in Japanese community, but most of them are groundless and have no source. I don't know much about the issue in 2009. But I don't think 2009 was the very moment their relationship worsened.



This is the only video Heath looks relaxed and jokes a lot(Yoshiki is not there). I wrote down their talking recently. I will translate it in English and upload it someday.

It was the director of the radio show whose hair was burnt according to the article you linked. He said he lost his hair earlier than his age because of the accident. Poor director. And the blogger says Hide was not a guest originally, but he broke into the studio after listening to the Yoshiki&Toshl's radio.

I think there are several reasons.

First of all, celebrity's behavior before the internet became popular is quite different from that of these days. I've been culturally shocked so many times after following X Japan. I found they used to smoke without asking to be excused by non-smokers next to them at variety shows in 80's and early 90's. Yoshiki was once arrested for drunk driving in LA, and he appeared on music station the very next month without any public apology. What if the same things happened these days? I bet the celebs can't appear on TV for a while, needless to say they will be harshly criticized by internet users.

Secondly, I think rockers' violent behaviors seem to be treated as swag or something like that, back in the days. Yoshiki often mentioned that he had been a school gang and broke hotel property in paper interviews and talk shows. I can see what he wants to advertise and hide because topics of talk shows are decided in advance. Yoshiki never talks about failing in US debut of "Art of Life" and "Dahlia". 

But more than 20 years have passed, and things are changed. Do you know Yoshiki apologized for tweeting during the live TV show last year? I was surprised again because it is definitely nothing compared to his behavior in 80's and 90's.

There are Toshl and drunk Yoshiki in radio studio(Hide is not there yet). Toshl is trying to host his radio show and Yoshiki keeps disturbing him("Don't read the script", "It's not fun at all", blah blah).

(1:33) Toshl shouts "It's dangerous. What are you doing?"
(1:40) loud noise (Yoshiki had been having SPIRYTUS(alcohol of 95 degrees) in his mouth. He spitted it out and lit a staff's hair)

Toshl says he wanna go home. Fortunately it doesn't seem to be a big fire. Toshl tries to host the show and Yoshiki disturbs again.

Thank you for reading the long writing. I dictated every single comment of X members, and it was hard to summarize.

Watching the videos, I found

1) Heath doesn't talk much as you can see. I read Japanese fans' comments worrying about the relationship between Yoshiki and Heath.

2) Pata calls Toshl "Deyama(出山)". Deyama is Toshl's family name.

3) Sugizo is very talkative and leads a conversation.

4) Yoshiki and Toshl are very happy when they tease each other.



I've read a funny comment in Japanese forum before.

Only Sugizo has pulled the cartas from the beginning. Toshl complains Sugizo pulls just weird cartas. Yoshiki volunteers he would pick a carta. He bets he will pick a good carta for sure.

Yoshiki picks a carta, and it says "ALBUM". (46:00)

Everybody laughs out loud looking at Yoshiki's card. (Yoshiki picked the card written "ALBUM" out of 70 cards) Other members say Yoshiki's picking the card "ALBUM" is the natural consequence of his acts.

Sugizo asks if they can have a new album this year. Yoshiki says the recordings of drums, guitars, bass and vocal are all finished. Sugizo asks if the piano recording is finished. Yoshiki answers it is finished except one song. Sugizo asks about something(I can't catch the word he says), and Yoshiki answers he has to put the female chorus for it.

Yoshiki says 3 weeks are required for finishing new album. Toshl says if Yoshiki says he can finish album in 3 weeks, it will be done as he says. Yoshiki says 3 weeks means absolute time for recording(not including time for sleeping and eating). Toshl says if they record without sleeping and eating they will die. Sugizo asks if the album could be finished in 2 months. Yoshiki says yes, and he turn a topic.

Pata says he played the bass, and Taiji and Yoshiki played the guitars, one day. Yoshiki and Toshl says Pata has a good memory. Pata says that after opening the fridge door, he often doesn't remember what he was trying to take out. Yoshiki asks Toshl if the penguin doll is fine in his fridge. Sugizo says he also has a penguin in his house. They all say penguins are cute. Pata says he has dreamed to raise penguins for a long time. Yoshiki says "What are you talking about? Are X members OK?"

Sugizo asks if penguins really smell. Yoshiki says what if washing them with body shampoo.

Yoshiki says he's seen panda at Ueno Zoo when he was a kid. But panda was much bigger than he thought, so he cried with fear. Toshl says Yoshiki cries whatever he sees. Toshl says Yoshiki cried when he saw Kiss.

Pata and Yoshiki talk about Osechi(おせち : traditional Japanese New Year foods) on the table. Yoshiki checks the Insta with his smartphone.

Yoshiki plays a niconico video they got shot on the bus a while ago(new year countdown). Pata says it is surprising Yoshiki is good at handling smartphone and something like that. Yoshiki says Pata looks like ojisan who is out of date. Pata acknowledges he is an ojisan(who cannot handle new equipment).

Yoshiki says he will perform after taking requests. "Alive" is requested. Yoshiki goes to the piano and plays it. Yoshiki asks Toshl to come and sing, but Toshl refuses saying the key is too high. Yoshiki says he will lower the key. Toshl doesn't listen to Yoshiki and keeps eating. Toshl finally goes and sings "Scarlet Love Song".

Yoshiki suggests to have a toast. Sugizo asks if they should drink it bottoms up. Yoshiki says Sugizo is instigating heavy drinking.

Yoshiki says they could get together at night thanks to fan's support, so they should "celebrate(祝う)" fan's health. Other members immediately correct Yoshiki's wrong Japanese. They say he should say "wish(祈る)" in the sentence. ((Yoshiki often speaks and writes wrong Japanese))

"Cheers!" "Happy New Year!"

(Layla arrives)

Yoshiki says he is frightened by too big Osech. Yoshiki picks shrimp Osech and scares Toshl with it. Toshl is freaked out. Sugizo and Yoshiki say they are eating Herring Roe Osech. They say they had been so hungry after kouhaku stage. Layla asks if they don't eat anything on NHK station. Sugizo says he doesn't eat anything during the show. Toshl says he eats something because he has no energy without eating. Yoshiki says he just ate one banana during the kouhaku. Sugizo says he eats bananas a lot at home. Yoshiki says Sugizo is an elephant. Sugizo says animals that love bananas are monkeys, not elephants. Layla says both elephants and monkeys eat bananas. ((A very very childish talk again, Layla looks like a kindergarten teacher who mediates a fight))

Yoshiki wonders what that green food is. They say it looks like an olive or a bean. Toshl says it looks like the alien with green face who appeared to X Japan's kouhaku stage. Yoshiki tastes it carefully but he doesn't know what it is. He says it tastes of Amazon. Sugizo tastes it and says it's a plum. Yoshiki keeps teasing Toshl with the plum. Pata raises his arm and asks "Whose house is this?" Sugizo says X Japan and Luna Sea's recorded songs there. Yoshiki says he practiced drums there recently.

Sugizo pulls a carta, and it says "Popular Music". Toshl asks Sugizo what popular music is. Sugizo asks the same question to Pata, but every member seems to have difficulty answering.

Sugizo pulls another carta and it says "overseas activities and foreign fans". Yoshiki says he went to many countries for his movie promotion, and he was happy whenever he had the local cuisine. He says he really enjoyed Italian cuisine at Rome. Sugizo says the Peruvian cuisine in Peru was very delicious. They say X Japan concert in Peru was amazing. They say the concert in Brazil was amazing, as well.

Sugizo pulls another carta and it says "Yoshiki Kei". Yoshiki says (making gesture) there are Luna Sea Kei and X Kei, and Sugizo is the link of two different Keis.

Sugizo pulls another carta and it says "members". Sugizo asks Pata how many former members were there in X before Pata joined in. Pata is flustered and he doesn't know how to count.

Sugizo asks if they founded X when they were in junior high school. Yoshiki answers it was when they were in high school. They talk about early X members for a long time. But Yoshiki, Toshl and Pata don't remember exactly about their early members. Sugizo says X fans probably want to know in detail about their early members. Sugizo says he found an old magazines he use to read in high school days(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obake_no_Q-tar%C5%8D). In the magazine, there were genealogy of indies metal bands back in the days. Sugizo says the magazine introduces X has 3 members - Yoshiki, Toshl, Taiji. Sugizo asks Pata again how many former members were there in X before Pata joined in. But Pata, Yoshiki, and Toshl can't remember. Sugizo says if he had been a member of X from the early days, he would have drawed a genealogy of X completely. But Yoshiki, Toshl and Pata seem to have little interest about their genealogy. Sugizo seems to have more knowledge about the early X members than Yoshiki, Toshl and Pata. 

Sugizo asks Pata if he is the 50th guitarist of X. Yoshiki says Pata will be about the 30th guitarist of X. Yoshiki asks Sugizo how many members were there in Luna Sea before sugizo's joining. Sugizo says there was just one member-Inoran.

Yoshiki asks Sugizo, when he happened to meet X for the first time. Sugizo talks about Extasy summit in those days. He has a very good memory. Sugizo also says Hide was the first member he became friends with. Sugizo with Hide went to an Izakaya to meet Yoshiki. Yoshiki just remembered the day. Yoshiki says Hide used to vomit what he ate for fear of being fat. Sugizo says he had been scared by Yoshiki because Yoshiki was Senpai.

Thank you for the links. I watched the clips and registerd this site. These days I'm studying Japanese. So I'd like to share what I've partially understood. I'm worried that I'm not good at English, but I'll try to translate it. If there are mistranslations, feel free to tell me.

1st clip :

X members eat soba(そば) before getting on the bus. I've heard Japanese eat soba on new year's day. Pata doesn't eat because he has soba allergy. They say soba is tasty.

(on the bus)

Joan says just 5 minutes are left to New Year. Yoshiki asks if there are big firecrackers, and Joan answers yes.

(Heath comes and the bus departs)

Yoshiki also asks if there is any alcohol. Joan asks the staffs and answers Yoshiki that alcohol will be served after cracking the firecrackers.

The wine is handed. Sugizo says soba and wine do not match. Yoshiki says soba and red wind match. But Sugizo seems to be sorry there is no Japanese traditional drink.

Yoshiki asks Toshl if he is exhausted and Toshl answers yes. 

Yoshiki says he is also exhausted, because he had hard time to arrange the songs for kouhaku.

(They pour wine into glasses)

Yoshiki asks members to talk about their own repentance and aspiration. Pata says they should shout "Happy New Year" before talking about repentance and aspiration.

"Happy New Year!" "Cheers!"

Yoshiki asks Sugizo about his repentance and aspiration. Sugizo talks to the camera "I am sorry anyway" for repentance. And about aspiration, he would like 60kg of body weight. Yoshiki asks Sugizo how many kilograms he weighs, and Sugizo answers 55kg. And he says he's never weighed more than 60kg in his life. Yoshiki says he can achieve it easily by eating ramen everyday. Yoshiki says he is the type who likes the place where camera is.

Joan asks Yoshiki's repentance and aspiration. Yoshiki says he made people worried last year. He also says headbanging is not good for his neck. Pata says Yoshiki realized it in 30 years. And about aspiration, Yoshiki wants health.
