Since we are a very multicultural/lingual board (or however that's called), why not teach each other some phrases in the language you know so that we finally understand what the Fins are talking about
some random ones
German
how are you? = wie gehts (dir)?/wie geht es Ihnen?
dog = hund
cat = Katze
table = Tisch
pancake = Pfannkuchen
:P
-
Dutch:
What's up = Alles goed?
Thank you = Dank je wel
You are great = Je bent geweldig
I love you = Ik hou van je
Go away! = Ga weg!
Obviously all of these must be used on me
-
Finnish (English is only language I speak beside Finnish, and I doubt you want me to teach you that.)
Thank you! = Kiitos
You are great = Sinä olet mahtava
I love you = Minä rakastan sinua
Go away! = Mene pois!
Girl = Tyttö
Boy = Poika
I hate you = Minä inhoan sinua
Yes = Kyllä
No = Ei
Day = Päivä
Night = Yö
There you go =]
-
And some more Finnish:
Mannsikka (jäädellö/jäätellö (not really sure about the spelling))- Strawberry (ice-cream)
Päärünä jäätellö- Pear ice-cream
Suklaa jäätellö- Chocolate ice-cream
Vanilliaa jäätellö- Vanilla ice-cream
Karamelli rommi rusina jäätellö- Caramel ice-cream with rum and rasins
Sitruna jäätellö- Lemon ice-cream
... I worked as an ice-cream seller in like 6 summers row... About 40% of the buyers were Finns
-
Dank je wel xScQ and Kiitos Mii and Hypno (you forgot the most important flavour: Melon!) :D
Some Spanish, if you please
Hello/Hi, how are you? = Hola, qué tal?
my name is = me llamo
boy/girl = el/la chico/a
and French
car = la voiture
very good = trés bien
f*ck off = bouge de la :P
-
And some more Finnish:
Mannsikka (jäädellö/jäätellö (not really sure about the spelling))- Strawberry (ice-cream)
Päärünä jäätellö- Pear ice-cream
Suklaa jäätellö- Chocolate ice-cream

Mansikka, Jäätelö, Päärynä, Sitruuna. Otherwise, good job ;P

-
Thanks all for the contibutions :D
@CB: Well, Russian is written in kryllic (or however you write that) as well but you can still write it in Latin letters (like I did in the Spam thread).
@Unfinished: Hm, maybe you know some accent, like Irish or an Southern accent or something? :P I wuldn't mind the slang, as well.
-
hmmmm......
*the pronunciation isnt as ridiculous as it may seem XDDD*
hello---geia sou

-
lol, why??i told you it sounds more beautiful than it may seem :o XD
-
@CB: Because it reminds me of this guy here
(http://xafarica.weblog.com.pt/arquivo/calimero.jpg)
@Unfinished: I've been learning French for about three years now and all I gotta say is...they're crazy, why the hell would someone write letters if they aren't heard/spoken anyway?
German is fun, especially all the different accents ^^
-
@ferret:thats sweet :P
and french is strange but i like them...german...i can speak a little....5 years lessons but i never really liked them...because my teacher sucked.he was yelling at me :P
-
By the surveys..french is considered the most beautiful language and german to be the most ugly so they say.
As for slang I cant think of much but I hear alot
one is
friend - "mate"
How about "homeboy"? :D
-
By the surveys..french is considered the most beautiful language and german to be the most ugly so they say.
I just read somewhere that Italian was the most pretty and Estonian is second ;)
-
and Estonian is second ;)
Only for Estonians :P
-
Estonian sounds very stupid to me, cause it's so close to finnish, so it just sounds like some finnish guy has lost his mind and talks just some random gibberish :D
-
Haha, I'm sure they feel the same about finnish ;P
-
Hurley, the same goes for Finns... The overflow or üü's and ää's and weird vocal soulutions sounds totally stupid to us, Estonians :P
-
To me both sound really strange (not back in my Estonian days, tho).
-
Dian, is saya/aku different based on gender of a speaker?
-
German is fun, especially all the different accents ^^
Haha, I gotta tell that when we were biking in Luxembourg with my family, one French guy thought that we were from Bavaria, because of my mom's German speaking :P
Hypno, sometimes I still can't help laughing at some Estonian words, because they are written on same way but the meaning is totally different :P Right now I can't remember any, but if they come to my mind, I'll come and tell.
And very useful phrase in Finnish: Minulla on krapula. = I have a hangover.
Lol.

Lol.
I think the word "home" means government or something similiar in Estonian and it means mould in Finnish. (I don't know if mould is the right word, but you know the stuff when food gets old and starts to get all green and stuff)
-
And very useful phrase in Finnish: Minulla on krapula. = I have a hangover.
Yes, you can hear that alot.. But not from me. If you ever caught me drinking, you shall be happy person :D
-
Home in Estonian is 'kodu'...
And as words having different meanings, 'kull' means eagle in Estonian but I have heard it means dirty stuff in Finnish :D
-
Home in Estonian is 'kodu'...

But I wasn't talking about the English "home", but the Estonian and Finnish "home". I just remembered my old teacher saying something like that, but I'm not sure.
And well, "kull" doesn't really mean anything but "kulli" does :D
-
Well...
I saw an eagle- Ma nägin kulli :D
-
Well...
I saw an eagle- Ma nägin kulli :D
Edit: Changet my mind, wont say anything.
-
original topic - do y ou really want me to start typing chinese? haha.. it's impossible to pronouce be looking at the character
-
As long as you write a pinyin trancription with tones and stuff, so it could be useful to those who have at least an idea about what Chinese sounds like, it IS worth it.
-
I saw an eagle- Ma nägin kulli :D
It seems that you in Estonia have pretty unordinary birds..
Okay, I won't say anything anymore.
-

haha.. that's nuts.. i speak cantonese.. my mandarin suck...
-
Dian, is saya/aku different based on gender of a speaker?
ee... no... Saya and Aku just two word that have one meaning, but older people in here indicate that Saya more polite than aku (usualy Saya used for talking with someone older than you), aku seem more arogant (for some people), but for some young people here there is no problem about it, and usualy young pople used street language for I (gue) or maybe use their name to called them self.
example: I'm hungry = Dian laper (some people not use saya or aku for calling them self)
me:---> do it this too :P I called my self dian
in Indonesia there are no defference to call a man or a women, here no her and him, or she and his, just dia/ ia (two word with one meaning again  ), or miliknya
I hope you undertand.... :P
-
I pretty much know what you mean cuz we also have no diffirence between calling man or a women.
-
aaahhh.. I see...
-
And very useful phrase in Finnish: Minulla on krapula. = I have a hangover.
Yes, you can hear that alot.. But not from me. If you ever caught me drinking, you shall be happy person :D
Oh, and what if you were invited to a party where you had to drink by someone from X? ;)
-

Welll.. I might consider it again. :D

good = bien , bon
I agree. French is a difficult language. Well I'm french and I still make some mistakes with verbs (and I'm 19 years old). English is so easier!!! Really, but... German... well I don't like german... very hard too!
AND WHY ON EARTH NOBODY ASKED HOW TO SAY "I LOVE X JAPAN" or "MY FAVOURITE MEMBER IS *member*"??
OK....
I love X JAPAN= J'aime X Japan or J'adore X Japan
My favourite member is *member*= Mon membre préféré est *member*
And well... For Yoshiki's fans...
Yoshiki you're so damn sexy, I want you to mary me.... Yoshiki tu es si sexy, je veux que tu m'épouses.
It could be usefull XD
-
hahahahahaha good idea Kyubi ;)
Agapw tous X Japan-->i love X Japan
to agapimeno mou melos einai*member*-->my favourite member is*member*
Yoshiki eisai apisteyta sexy, thelw na me padreyteis....XD--->Yoshiki you are so damn sexy,i want you to marry me
this COULD definitely be useful ;)
-

I agree on French being difficult in some way, I don't understand why on earth they have to use the subjonctif :P (as well as the Spanish->jubjuntivo). But German ist waaaay easier, I learned it in about a month or so (well, then my grammar sounded right and I could actually express myself correctly). It helps a lot if you talk to German people, really *ich koennte dir dabei helfen  *
as for I love X
German: Ich liebe X Japan!
Russian: Ya ljublju X Japan!
Spanish: Quiero X Japan! (I hope quiero works oo)
-
ferret kannst du mir help, die deutsche sprache zu lerne?
XD
sorry,i cant really speak :P
-
Ja, ich kann dir help, oder helfen, wie man eher sagen würde
-
yaaay!I totally understood what you said......woohhooooo<3
-
Sehr Gut, setzen! :P
Oh dear, what would I love X mean in Latin?
Xem amo?
-
German is scary. Every noun capitalized, that is just too much.
Thinking of it, I might have here some old Latin textbook. . . Let's see.
-
Yeah, capitalized Nouns are scary :P
I still do have Latin, but I'm not sure with Xem...just put it like rex->regem, but maybe it should be left X since it's just one letter :?
-
Language that would leave X's out is scary too.
(Actually, Latin *does* scare me in a way.)
-
(Actually, Latin *does* scare me in a way.)
Interessantus est
-
I'd like to know how one says Go Tomb, Ferrety-- but since I would have first need to look it up, it's not worth bothering.
-
things will be better if we only had one language
-
Well ok i guess XD everyone should post "we are x" in their language or so... XD
We found out in german it's "Wir sind X"
Swedish: Vi är X
French: Nous sommes X
Russian: Мы X
Latin: Sumus X (i think o.o)
russian is funny, they don't have a form of "be" in present tense
those are all the languages i know
-
Dutch: Wij zijn X
-
Spanish: Somos X (it would be pretty embarrassing if it was estamos, lol)
Upper Austrian dialect: Mia san X :P
-
French: Nous sommes X
Toshi at the Paris concert: "Nous sommes! Nous sommes!" :P
(Anyway I just realized I started the other Language thread exactly one year after this was started, didn't know about this one though :P bad research :P)
-

-
eesti keel
-
Interessantus est
Linguam latinam amo, semper interessantus (?) est :D
-
Interessantus est is no actual term, but some guy in my former class, who was rather bad at Latin, invented his own...style
And I guess you mean: Amo Latinum...after that I'm lost, haha.
-

Yeah, I could guess that, that's why I put the question mark there :P
Nono, linguam latinam amo it is, lingua latina in accusative + amo - I love the latin language :)
-
I've never heard anyone call it lingua latina, just Latinum :P
-
Well, that's strange :)
I've heard it in class a lot of times :O
maybe you can say both
-
Probably, maybe lingua latina was too long for my teacher
-
Well, maybe the name of the language is latinum and lingua latina is just a construction with latina as an adjective for lingua? Like "Latin", and "The Latin Language"? :)
-
Yep, that's what I think.
-
alea jacta est ^^ i love it how i don't know almost ANY latin anymore even though i was learning it since 5th grade
-
I think it's something that you forget pretty quick,
though maybe it depends on your teacher?
But I think it's good to study since you get a really good vocabulary, especially when it comes to english :)
And you seem well-read when you can throw in a latin quotation at any time :D
"Nemo saltat sobrius, nisi forte insanit" :)
-
Cogito, ergo sum. (which our phychology/philosophy teacher translated incorrectly...)
Salve!
Pater noster, qui est in caelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum...
Habemus papam!
Loose German translation: Wir sind Papst!
-
oh nein... wir hier oben im Norden sind und waren nie Papst!!
XD
-
Cogito, ergo sum. (which our phychology/philosophy teacher translated incorrectly...)
Oh, our latin teacher is the best, she doesn't translate incorrectly, but she makes up her own for the tests, made of mixes of famous quotes. I can't think of one right now, but they're great ;)
Pater noster, qui est in caelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum...
Отче наш, Иже еси на небесех! Да святится имя Твое...
Since it's a language forum
I know it by heart (I used to be at a summer camp with russian kids), though I don't know how to spell it :)
-
Slovak language:
Sme X!
*lol* XDDDD SME is actually even a name of one Slovak newspaper.... and in Slovak you don't need to say WE ARE.. ARE is enough and everybody knows you mean WE. ^^ Otherwise it would be:
MY SME X!
-
Czech: MY JSME X!
-
Czech: MY JSME X!
:3 juhuuuu... ehm... XD
Rozmyslam, ako by to bolo polsky... *lol*
X
I wonder how to say it Polish...
-
Norwegian and Danish would be something like "Vi er X" xDDD
-
Finnish: Me olemme X!
-
Chinese:
We are X: Wo men shi X!
And seeing someone doing these..:
I love X Japan: Wo ai X Japan
My favourite member is *member*: Wo zui xi huan de tuan yuan shi *member*
Yoshiki you're so damn sexy I want you to marry me: Yoshiki ni hen xing gan wo yao ni qu wo!
LOL this is so interesting. XD
-
Japanese (male macho speaking version - but I think it HAS to be that way):
Oretachi wa X da!
@xkurokei: you ruin my Chinese... my teacher won't be happy about that... but I am!
-
Japanese (male macho speaking version - but I think it HAS to be that way):
Oretachi wa X da!
Yeah no X without oretachi and da xDDD
-
I'm now fluent in Hurley-German! :D
-
Oh yes. 8)
-

That's cute.
-

That's cute.
XDD it's not very cute if you say it to random people on the street. They give you dirty looks.
(believe me, I tried. XD)
-
When you say it in Germany/Austria/Swiss(?) they'll think it's cute :P
-
When you say it in Germany/Austria/Swiss(?) they'll think it's cute :P

-
What? Heilige Scheiße! When did the pope do that?! :o
-
Has anyone posted Portuguese, so far?
Here it goes:
Hello, how are you? = Olá, como estás?
We are X! = Nós somos X!
You are X! = Vocês são X!
strawberry icecream = gelado de morango
lemoned icecream = gelado de limão
I love you = Amo-te
:)
-
And you can try some Czech tongue twisters:
"Strč prst skrz krk." which basically means "Push finger through throat." - but the point is that there are no vowels in this sentence. So nothing for Japanese.
or
"Tři tisíce tři sta tři a třicet stříbrných stříkaček stříkalo přes tři tisíce tři sta tři a třicet stříbrných střech." ("3 333 silver fire engines spouted over 3 333 silver roofs.".
-
Oh, that ř of yours.... XD
Slovak one: Pes spí, psi spia.
(A dog is sleeping, dogs are sleeping.)
-
Oh, that ř of yours.... XD
It's a nice sound! 8)
All my classmates - Slovaks hate it!
-
All my classmates - Slovaks hate it!
I dare to say I can pronounce it!!! Mwahahahaaa.... :P
-
I dare to say I can pronounce it!!! Mwahahahaaa.... :P
Record it, send it to me and I'll tell you if it is Czech enough. :D (only if you want to, of course )
-
Oh yeah, how could I forget that one:

We are X ---> Mes esame X (that sounds stupid un lithuanian)
Dog ---> shuo
Cat ---> katinas
Bird ---> paukshtis
-
Okay, how about this:
People always say that the "Geordie" English accent is hard to understand, and in some cases is like hearing a completely different language. My accent itself isn't Geordie but I live close enough to understand its slang terms, here are a few randomly chose words/phrases  :
"Canny" = A positive term, usually a term of endearment to someone.
"Tuppin" = The act of love making
"Hacky" = dirty
"Well aye", "Wai aye" or "aye" = Yes, affirmative response.
"Gannin" = Going, to go somewhere.
"Alreet" = Are you Alright?/ How are you?
-
X freaks who speak/understand Cantonese, halp, please!

Starts at 6:03, I'd love to know what they're singing

Only posers and women drink wine. - Alleen faalhazen en vrouwen drinken wijn.

That one always works. 8) Generally speaking the only people that don't like the ones are the ones that "like" that idiot band....

-
So I'm trying to learn Mandarin atm but then Thai seemed a good idea (because of my sleep deprivation, I guess), it actually sounds easier to pronounce than Mandarin but then I heard the Thai alphabet...lord. Has anyone here tried to pick up Thai/does anyone speak Thai?
-
Ferret, ask leading_note :P
-
Um, duh, thanks, I meant people who aren't native speakers :P But still a good idea ;D
-
I went to Thailand a few years ago and I randomly bought a book there to learn Thai 'cause it seemed like fun.
But I don't understand the book AT ALL. I think it might be a book that's meant for a lecture or something. Either that or Thai is the most confusing language in the world.
-
