I'M A FERRET R U BLIND?

I mean, I feel (national) pride for four countries - and I've only lived in three of those - so yeah lol.

Estonia: Is where I was born, I love the country and the culture all around.
Germany: Germans are hilarious, everyone who says otherwise is a big fat liar and jealous. We have scientists, inventors and stuff, shit yeah.
Austria: We have Schnitzel. Austrians are even more hilarious than Germans and very laid back. We have Mozart, shit yeah.
Russia: Where my momma was born. Of all the nations, Russians are the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure to meet. We also have the best/funniest curses, no one can compete, sorry.

Huh... our scientists and our comedians. But apart from this..?
Scorpions, Doro and Rammstein are from here, but I'm no fan of those, haha!

Damn, I cannot think of anything special. Döner- and fry-eating nazis? RAF? Living in a country which is often reduced to Bavaria from people of other countries? *sarcasm* :D

Our educational system must have been great... once upon a time... We also had great writers, I think. But right now I have the feeling, my country doesn't really have a face.  ???
OH! But the Brothers Grimm came from this area here, when I'm not wrong. And without them Yoshiki might never have been Cinderella!  ;D

Oh, and how could I forget about Thüringer Bratwurst?! <3 And dark bread?! And Eisbein?! WURST!!! <333 nom nom nom

Agreed. Aside from that I'm not sure. We're also a famous beer country, but I don't actually drink beer XD.

I mainly love Belgium on an artistic level. We had some awesome painters (Ensor, Magritte, Spilliaert, ...) and architects (Henri van de Velde and Victor Horta).
The cities Brussels and Ghent make me proud, because I LOVE THEM.

Err... Jean-Claude Van Damme? XD

Although the culture of sauna nowadays is more or less related to Finnish culture, it's important to note that the evolution of sauna has happened around the same time both in Finland and the Baltic countries sharing the same meaning and importance of sauna in daily life. The same sauna culture is shared in both places still to this day.

Besides, Kalevala describes events that have happened in Estonia, so I imagine it's at least partly true, in which case you can't call it ripping off :P

What in it happened in Estonia? And well, I guess it's as true as Jesus and his pals stories, except that there are at least some evidence that a guy named Jesus has existed. :P Kalevala is old Finnish folklore collected by Elias Lönnrot from Finnish people (plus he added some own stuff).

The Kaali meteor for example.
Quote
Finnish mythology has stories that may describe happenings of Kaali, one of them in runes 47, 48 and 49 of the Kalevala epic. Louhi, the evil wizard steals the Sun and fire from people, causing total darkness. Ukko, the god of sky orders a new Sun to be made from a sparkle. The virgin of the air starts to make a new Sun, but the sparkle drops from the sky and hits the ground. This spark goes to an "Aluen" or "Kalevan"[2] lake and causes its water to rise. Finnish heroes see the ball of fire falling somewhere "behind the Neva river" (the direction of Estonia from Karelia). The heroes head that direction to seek fire, and they finally gather flames from a forest fire.

And usually folklore is just a heavily exaggerated true story

Ok, still that doesn't make the stories any more Estonian ;D And does "the direction of Estonia from Karelia" mean it's in Estonia or Karelia?
Title: Re: What makes you proud of your country?
Post by: Sander on November 10, 2008, 07:51:23 PM
From Karelian viewpoint, it's in Estonia (or in the same direction). And well, you have to admit it's a good explanation :P
Title: Re: What makes you proud of your country?

From Karelian viewpoint, it's in Estonia (or in the same direction). And well, you have to admit it's a good explanation :P

Ah ok, so it's about the meteorite that created lake Kaali. It still doesn't make the story really Estonian, if the heroes were Karelian. A meteorite large enough to create a lake would've been seen in Finland too, especially since Karelia was a part of Finland back then. It's still a story told by the Finns, and the stories were collected from Finns. So I dunno what's the point in this, unless Kaleva poek (or whatever it's called) is totally different from what I've understood.

EDIT: And you definitely ripped off our national anthem ;D

Why does everyone like Tintin? He's annoying... like many Belgian comic book heroes -_-'
Give me mangas any day, in most cases the art skillz are way better, and the plots more interesting...

How 'bout reading a book? Plenty of good Dutch/Belgian writers to enjoy.

I'm Irish and proud of Guinness, Irish rugby team, Irish music, Potatoes!! and our Language!!

I love Guinness, especially the kind they only sell in Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg (I believe it's Guinness special export extra stout or something like that). Plus Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore are all Irish (although Gary's from the northern part) so plenty to be proud of methinks.

Haha, I don't like most manga (don't get me wrong, I love some too!) because I find the art style is awfully repetitive and often the plots too. In my opinion Tintin is one of the best things that's ever come out of Belgium. Every time I read them I find new layers in the humour that I didn't see before, it's awesome.

How 'bout reading a book? Plenty of good Dutch/Belgian writers to enjoy.
Ooh agreed. *studies Dutch and English literature*

- Ad van den Berg (aka Adrian Vandenberg, ex-Whitesnake guitarist. Played in lots of other bands too)
- Vengeance (80s hard rock band)
- Harry Mulisch (writer)
- FEBO (best fastfood in the world)
- Feyenoord (soccer club)

That's about it I think.
