I haven't seen that many I think, but what I have seen this far have been quite good. "5cm per second" for example, was amazingly beautiful. "Samurai X" (the Rurouni Kenshin OVAs) I really enjoyed, also "Sky Crawlers".

Totally agree! It is such a powerful film, extremely emotional but I would recommend it to everyone!

I haven't really watched many animes. In fact the only ones I have seen have been from Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro, The Cat Returns, Porco Rosso). FilmFour here in the UK is pretty good at showing Studio Ghibli films (although usually in the dubbed versions rather than subtitles), Porco Rosso was on at the weekend!

its good that the topic is called movies with a s. So here is my fav list, in no particular order.

Metropolis
Mononoke Hime
Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi a.k.a. Spirited Away
Hauro no ugoku shiro a.k.a. Howl's Moving Castle
Tonari no Totoro
AIR (even though animation wise, Kyo-Ani series is a tick better, or at least more Bishoujo ;D )
Spriggan (one of my first anime movie DVDs)
Ghost in the Shell (the first one. Simply awesome!!!)
Kumo no mukou, yakusoku no basho a.k.a. The Place promised in our early days
Hoshi no koe a.k.a. Voices of the distant star

Summer Wars is a really good anime movie!  :)

And I would also recommend nearly every Studio Ghibli movie. Too many to name them all (Nausicaä, Totoro, Mononoke Hime, ...)

While I'm away, read this line again...

My Neighbour Totoro (obviously!), closely followed by Grave of the Fireflies and Spirited Away. I'm a huge Ghibli fan.

Woah, I can haz admin colour.

- Studio Ghibli classics such as Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.

- the Secret World of Ariety for the aesthetic.

- Millennium Actress. A heart wrenching, mysterious, and conflicting story. I wanted to tell off the main character so bad. He would have loved her despite what she looked like!!!

- In This Corner of the World. Kind of similar to the Grave of the Fireflies but not really. It involves WWII in Japan but it's more subtle than that... In fact, it took me a minute to get into but once the expectations of "anime" dissolved that subtleness gave way to a truly heart touching following of a possible*: ;D girl's life at that time.

The movie doesn't give everything away and offers very psychologically interesting occurrences that the viewer has the right to interpret in a number of ways, but I still get a kind of breathtaking feel from thinking about the movie. It wasn't what I expected but it turned out being so much better. There's a realness to the character's experiences; it's an anime that isn't stuck in the anime-verse. The drawing style is also unqiue. It's probably still on Netflix.

We are not trying to keep the legacy—we are trying to move forward, so our sound is going to change. I’m ready to be criticized, for example by fans saying "you should rather be this style." I’m ready for it, I’m okay with any concept of criticism-Yoshiki
