I finally listened to hide's Zilch album... there's one thing which kinda made me think a bit to much... the song "What's up Mr.Jones". It's not only that the tune is the same as Drain, but I speak more about the words. Have you think about it, anyone? Do you know when the text was written?
We all know that hide was against X's break-up and one of the main reasons for break-up was Toshi... so is Toshi the Mr.Jones, or is it only my overimagination and coincidence?

WHAT'S UP MR JONES?

Jones is so alone. One million miles from home
Sold your diamonds and dogs for some stones
You watched your starman drown and let your spiders down
Left your starman to die on his own

Cause you sold us a lie. But your starman is gone.
He's a star in the sky

Well this is ground control and we have got your soul
Meet the man who sold out to the world
You let your starman down. Mr. karma clown
You're no hero or mainman to me

YOU SOLD US A LIE WHILE WE CRIED IN PAIN
NOW YOU'RE SO ALONE LIKE A FLY IN THE RAIN
SO TIRED OUT. WHAT'S UP MR. JONES?
SO TRY IT OUT. WHAT'S UP MR. JONES?
SO TRY IT NOW. WHAT'S UP MR. JONES?
WHAT'S UP MR. JONES?

So alone one million miles from home
Like a magott you feed off yourself
So alone broke your spider's bones
Left your starman to die by yourself

YOU SOLD US A LIE. WHILE WE CRIED IN VAIN
NOW YOU'RE SO ALONE. LIKE A FLY IN THE RAIN
SO TRY IT OUT. WHILE WE CRIED IN VAIN
SO TRY IT NOW. LIKE A FLY IN THE RAIN
WHAT'S UP MR. JONES?.

Hmmm good point, didn't think of that... tbh I just ignored the lyrics, as most of the lyrics are slightly odd (Fuctrack 6 and Electric Cucumber come to mind...).
It could be Toshi, I suppose we'll never know...

David Bowie?

The "starman" and "spiders" (from mars?) parts have got to be Bowie references, anyway.  Whether the whole song is about him or not, I don't know.

The whole lyric is one big fat tribute to David Bowie. I've found so many references I can't count them all here.

"Meet the man who sold out to the world" (The Man Who Sold The World)
"Starman" (Starman)
"Spiders" (Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders from Mars)
"This is ground control"  (Space Oddity)
"Diamonds and dogs" (Diamond Dogs)

All Bowie.

Well, not necessarily. Jsut because hide used a lot of Bowie elements in the lyric, it doesn't mean that he had some kind of thought behind it, the way he put it together.
It could've been a way more positive song if he had wanted it to be.

  Thanks Millie, very interesting info. There is still the "why" he wrote it like this, it strikes me as a bit hateful... but that's what we'll never know I guess

Hey, are you guys even sure that hide wrote the lyrics?

I'm not sure but I think I've seen somewhere that some of the other guys in the band did it, but I'm far from sure :)

It's just another interpretation. Not solid proof.
But interesting nonetheless, someone's gone more deeply into it than I have XD'

EDIT: wow, after reading it more thoroughly it really seems like a direct attack on bowie. THat can't be! Bowie is lovely :(

O.o it's a tribute...? personally I don't know what to think of that song since it sounds so... hateful... I know, he liked Bowie alot, but I still don't get why to write a song like that then... Because Ziggy Stardust died...?
Just a few thoughts... bah that song scares me >.<

There are alot of Bowie references.

"You're no hero or mainman to me"  Is Reference to 'Heros'

And if I'm not mistaken there is a reference there to "Life on Mars."

David Bowie has had several 'persona's.... Aladdin Sane, Thin White Duke, Ziggy Stardust, Halloween Jack ...

Maverick - The "death of Ziggy Stardust" is in the lyrics

"Making love with his ego Ziggy sucked up into his mind
Like a leper Messiah
When the kids had killed the man I had to break up the band" (Last verse from Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie"

I think that album is titled "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust".  I had it at one time... but I think my cousin got it

David Bowie's name is really Davey Jones, but due to (I think) one of the Monkees or Partriges, he had to change his name

Yes yes I know that all - I only don't get it why it's so hateful because all in all it sounds to me that he's actually AGAINST Bowie like someone who felt betrayed

Yeah, I'm digging up a 2 year old topic. XD
It sounds like it's mostly about hide's dismay at Bowie killing off Ziggy Stardust. I don't think it's a direct attack as such. And even if it is, I still love this song and Bowie.

I don't think he adresses Bowie in this song.
It would be too obvious.
I think he could be talking about himself.
