With so many people joining this forum recently, I felt like posting a D.T.R intro thing, in case there's anyone out there who's curious about D.T.R but doesn't know where to start-- especially since D.T.R info can be hard to find.

And hey: these guys rock!  If you like rock/metal and are looking for something new to try, check it out.

Intro:
D.T.R-- originally called DIRTY TRASHROAD-- is a Japanese metal band, founded by Taiji Sawada (TAIJI from X) in 1994.  They're relatively hard and heavy, but they also incorporate a lot of acoustic guitar and other country-western elements and themes.  "Cowboy metal" would be a good description, especially in their early days.

They released two full albums, one mini-album, one video, and one single.  After the second album, vocalist Mitsuo Takeuchi quit the band and D.T.R ceased activity soon after.  Taiji has said that he doesn't want to comment on why he decided to stop D.T.R.  A compilation album was released after the band stopped.

D.T.R re-started in 2005.  Since then they've performed some concerts, and they released a new single near the end of last year.  This new single is the only D.T.R material currently in print.

Members:
Taiji Sawada, Mitsuo Takeuchi, and Taiji Fujimoto are the only members to have performed on every release.

A note on the keyboardists: Kenji Shimizu played keyboard on the live tracks on the "Drive to Revolution" CD.  It seems that he may have been their live keyboardist for quite some time (more info really appreciated if anyone knows), though Shigeo Komori was used for the '90s studio tracks. Thanks Arucard.

The following are studio lineups, taken from the CD booklets:

Thank you so much! I've always been curious about D.T.R but in the past but I was never able to find their stuff. Now I was able to get the Dirty Trashroad album and it really is pretty cool! There's some weird sounds in there sometimes XD, but it's fun. I'll have to listen to it some more for a 'decent opinion' though.

There's two Taiji's in there? Nice.

No problem! :)

I'm curious what you'll think of it once you listen to it more.  My first DTR album was Dirty Trashroad too, and I admit it took me some time to get used to Mitsuo's voice on some of the songs ("I Do" for example...).  But as time went by and I got more used to him, I started getting really into DTR-- and now I have a hard time imagining them with a different vocal style.

Yeah, my first D.T.R album was "Dirty Trashroad" too... The only difference is that I became a huge fan of them after the first listen...

And just one doubt here Hollywood... Are you sure Kenji Shimizu was not a member of D.T.R back in 94? I mean, listen to the live version of "So What"... After the keyboard solo I'm pretty sure Mitsuo says "Shimizu Kenji!"...

@Babak, cool, glad you found it useful! :D  And I would guess the Chain solo is Taiji (Sawada), though I can't say for sure.  In Daring Tribal Roar he's credited as "Bass, A. Guitar & Chorus" while Taiji Fujimoto and Tomoyuki Kuroda are both "Guitars & Chorus".  I guess "guitars" would include acoustic, though it's so hard to say without seeing them live...

I realize now that I didn't put in the & Chorus stuff and all that.  (Plus I left out the "s" in "guitars", which is perhaps quite significant in this case.)  I'll go do that soon, just to make it as complete as possible...

@Arucard, you're right!  I did those lineups out of the Dirty Trashroad+Daring Tribal Roar+Wisdom/Lucifer booklets and didn't bother to check the compilation album.  Oops.  Thanks for spotting that one!

So now that I've looked in the Drive To Revolution CD booklet... hahaha.  This is crazy, check it out:
Quote

TAIJI SAWADA on Bass, A. Guitar & Chorus
MITSUO TAKEUCHI on Vocal & Chorus
TAIJI FUJIMOTO on Guitars & Chorus
TOMOYUKI KURODA on Guitars & Chorus
KENJI SHIMIZU on Keyboards & Chorus
Supported by
ICHIRO on Guitars (M-2, 5)
SHIGEO KOMORI on Keyboards & Programing (M-2~4, 6, 7, 10)
TOSHIHIKO OKABE on Drums & Percussion (M-2, 5, 8, 9)
KAZUHISA "Roger" TAKAHASHI on Drums (M-3, 4, 6, 7, 10)

In other words, Kenji on the live tracks, but Shigeo on the studio tracks-- from both albums-- that have keyboard.

I'm going to guess that since they were both support members at that point, Shigeo was hired only for the studio tracks while they used Kenji for concerts (and then recently made him a full member of the band)?  Think that's it?

I'll add some kind of amendment to the original post about it anyway.  (With all the ex-members and almost-members and everything else, I get the feeling they may have been a rather.... "turbulent" band in the '90s. :P)

Nothing new from D.T.R. coming up anytime soon?

Well, there was planned an album and as far as I got it right from blogs last year it was also already recorded.... yeah... still waiting for the release. :?
:P I just hope that the delay is not because of Taiji beeing so fuckin' busy with drinking whiskey together with Pata in the Attitude movie and with appearing with his fanboy Shu & Cloud Nine!

@ Hollywood: You really did a great job! Now let's hope it catches some victims for some indescribable addiction to D.T.R!

The first song I heard was Kill Trap, and it was soo raw compared to other stuff I've heard by then. Not in terms of ultraspeedy deathmetal-raw, but the combination of guitar, drum and lyrics at a calm pace built this odd feeling of rawness. So hard yet so soft. Like my throat was gently and gracefully being cut. I was in love.

Awesome description.  I know what you mean, too.  It's not that they're THAT hard-- there are bands much harder-- but there's something really rough and raw about it.  And yet it manages still to be "musical" (it's not anti-skill or something), and in fact the level of musicianship is quite high, in my opinion anyway.

And for me, once I wrapped my head around Mitsuo's vocal style I became pretty impressed by him.  Not only is he singing in a language that (as far as I know) he's not fluent in, but he's singing in a very specific style of that language's slang-- and to add yet a third layer of difficulty, half the time he's doing it in that weird falsetto.  Hell... that's not easy!!

About the Chain solo, since Chain was a single and DTR is pretty much Taiji's "solo project"-- or at least, that's how it started out-- I feel like he'd probably be the one to do the solo on the single.  That's just me speculating, though.

Oh yeah, and about new material, sadly I don't know any more than Camicat does (actually I think she knows more than I do).  But I'm hopeful that we may see something soon, since on that new blog Taiji just started, the photos show him in his DTR clothes.  Kinda surprised me in fact, since until that point I thought he may have put DTR on hold for now and switched to Cloud Nine.  But no Cloud Nine Taiji photos in the blog.  (I like Cloud Nine too, but I like DTR more, so I was happy to see all those DTR Taiji photos. 8))

EDITED TO ADD:
@Camicat: "Kill Trap I'm gonna..."....uh... get more people to listen to this band?  (Hopefully!)

Well I gave them a listen now (thanks to you Hollywood   ) and i think the music is really great.
I haven't really listened to such music before (well they mix so much, I can't quite name all the genres that ran into the music), but it totally hit my taste. It's amazing

They have so many different sounds, their albums don't get boring at all. I like both ballads and the quick songs. I don't think this will be the only time i've listened to them 8)

Cool, glad you like it!  Yeah, I think their sound is pretty unique-- I can think of a lot of bands who sound a little like them, but really no one who sounds exactly like them.

Which songs/albums do you like best so far?

Oh that is a really hard question! I don't know it yet.
I listened to Dirty Trashroad a second time now and the songs that I really liked (I like them all, but those I liked more XD) were Shake More, Cybernetic Crime, So What XD, Empty Room, Dirty Winner and Be Free

Empty Room is such a wonderful ballad and if i had to pick a non-ballad song it would be Be Free, I think... but they're all so great

I give Daring Tribal Roar another listen now  :P

Hmm, no Kill Trap (yet?), huh?  That's interesting, since it seems that Kill Trap is a popular "this song got me into DTR!" song.

But the songs that got me into them were Cybernetic Crime and Empty Room, since I didn't hear Daring Tribal Roar until later.

For me it started with So What and Empty Room from the Dirty Trashroad album. And after having listened to those the first time, I had no doubt, that I'd totally love the rest of their works!

Same here... After listening to these two tracks for a while I decided to give the whole album another try, and the whole "Cybernetic Crime"/"Empty Room"/"So What"/"Dirty Winner"/"Side By Side"/"Be Free" sequence just got me addicted to the band...  8)

dumb question: Does anyone know where to buy their music, I heard most of it was out of print so that makes me concerned.  I am willing to download it but I want to see if I can buy it.

Not a dumb question! :)

Unfortunately yeah, almost all of it is out of print, but luckily it's not super-rare.

The only thing IN PRINT-- or at least, still available new (not sure if they are really still printing them)-- is the Wisdom/Lucifer single from last year.  There are two places you can buy it:
D.T.R's official site (seems to ship only to Japan)
Third Stage (ships overseas)

For the rest of it, you could try:
Third Stage - Usually not the cheapest option, but you can shop in English and they ship overseas.  I've ordered from them several times and never had a problem, so if you want to try them and need help, feel free to ask.
Yahoo Japan Auctions - Never tried it, but they almost always have D.T.R stuff.  Most sellers don't ship overseas, so you may have to use one of those deputy services.
Amazon Japan - Same as above, and they seem to always have a LOT of used copies of Dirty Trashroad and Daring Tribal Roar.
eBay - Dirty Trashroad and Daring Tribal Roar turn up from time to time, and can usually be bought/won for under US$20.  The other CDs appear on occasion too.
Or, if you have a friend in Japan, see if they'll check in the used bookstores (i.e. Book Off) for you.  I hear that D.T.R CDs often turn up at Book Off, sometimes in the cheap section.

From my experience, Dirty Trashroad and Daring Tribal Roar aren't too hard to find, Acoustic is a little harder, and Drive to Revolution is pretty rare.  The hard part is finding someone who will ship them overseas to you.

Good luck!  Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

First post in this section ! :D

So I never heard anything of this band but I'm a bit curious. Taiji is the only X member I haven't listen to his "solo" project.

So, in your opinion, which album is the best and what songs ? (To start listening to this band).

Damn, if I only could decide. It depends I'd say.
As a fan I'd say, they're all great. Honestly I don't know anything I dislike froom D.T.R.
I started with the songs So What (rockin') and Empty Room (ballad) - and then the whole Dirty Trashroad LP. And I think this was a good start to make me an addict.

But let's see what the cowboys here are thinking... Hollywood? Arucard? :D Your turn!

Yeah, welcome! :D

I think most people like the first album (Dirty Trashroad) best-- it's my favorite too, though pretty much like Camicat, there isn't any DTR I don't like.

But the weird thing is, it actually took me a while to become a fan, mostly due to Mitsuo's voice.  So, fair warning I guess: if you don't get into DTR at first, you might still get into them if you try them again later. ;)  (Mitsuo's now one of my favorite vocalists, ironically.)

My first songs were Cybernetic Crime (rock) and Empty Room, both are great, and then I listened to the whole Dirty Trashroad album.  But there's great stuff on other albums as well-- I really like Kill Trap (rock) and Desert River (ballad) too; those are both from Daring Tribal Roar.

I listened to about 5 songs of Dirty Trashroad album. Still haven't had time to listen to them carefully though.

I know one song (Empty Room maybe, not sure) reminded me of Voiceless Screaming.

And yeah, the voice of the singer is sometimes weird, but I think I'll get used to it.

It's definitely good hard rock. I'm gonna listen to it more next week when I'm on REAL holidays :D

Edit : some parts of the song Shake More makes me think of the song Sympathy For The Devil (Ozzy's version of the song).

Singer is always one and the same in D.T.R - it's Mitsuo Takeuchi.
;D Yah, this Rumpelstiltskin voince may need some familiarization.

And out of the chaos I heard a voice telling me:
"Smile and be happy - it could have become worse!"
So I smiled and was happy... and it became worse
