hide / Re: Headwax VS Sankyo and JMA Case Dropped

Hypno, in all due respect, I believe that the use of hide's image/audio is not good for the band's image. I say this despite the fact that my admiration of hide knows no bounds. But the way X Japan has carried itself up until this year makes it difficult for new fans to take it seriously as a legitimate band. The constant emphasis on hide makes it seem like X as a band has no function other than to honor hide's memory. This is frankly absurd, especially considering the minimal role that hide actually played in the development of the bulk of the band's material.

Now, having said that, X has taken great strides towards legitimizing itself. Inducting Sugizo as an official member was a good step, although giving him a 6th spot is silly, because, what of Taiji, for example? He was at LEAST as critical of a member as hide up until his removal from the band, and yet, his existence was all but wiped out until recently. Nonetheless, finally allowing Sugizo to carry out his responsibilities as far as actually playing hide's solo parts, rather than power chords over a backing track of hide soloing, was also a step in the right direction. The fact that they've continued writing new material is definitely a good sign too, although IMHO it's more of a case of "good intentions, poor execution" in that case. But, of course, that comes down to subjectivity and I would never hold it against someone for enjoying their new songs. That is all :)

Sugizo / Re: Sugizo's solo career

I wouldn't say his solo work is better than LUNA SEA but most of the standout LUNA SEA stuff was written by either J or INORAN.

I could not disagree more...

Dejavu, Believe, Loveless, End of Sorrow, Desire, In Silence, I For You, Millenium, Feel *_*

Oh and about the Dahlia effects - it's not necessary wah, there are tons of diff approaches to filtering. The whammy thing was obvious; I mentioned the sustainer because that's definately the one elusive sound there that might be misconstrued as an effect but necesssarily isn't. Just didn't want to see someone looking for something that doesn't exist. It's just controlled feedback on an artificial harmonic frequency.

hide / Re: do you think hide would be happy now?

Exactly, those were just hide's songs, part of the 5% that the other members of X were allowed to contribute overall

5%???

I didn't realize that 4 out of 9 songs on Vanishing Vision (44%), 3 out of 12 songs on Blue Blood (25%), 6 out of 10 songs on Jealousy (60%), and 3/10 songs on Dahlia (30%) written by the other members constitutes a mere 5% overall!!! wow!  :o

those songs don't decide any direction change in the band, only Yoshiki's songs and decisions do, and the new direction of the rock/metal songs was actually Rusty Nail and Dahlia on that album, the main change in direction of the band was all the ballads on that album though.

In YOUR opinion. As I see it, hide's interest in industrial music clearly contributed to the reshaped climate of X's music. I see the direction that Scars and Drain took as being a significant factor in that development, as well as Dahlia and Rusty Nail. To me, IV and Jade are merely a continuation of that, although clearly lifeless and uninspired in comparison.

General chat / Re: Pata Vs. hide: This pisses me off
« on: December 09, 2009, 06:24:04 PM »
I think it's just more of a matter of hide's technique being a bit awkward (especially his picking hand) and Pata just being seen as a reliable, solid guitarist who can hold his own.

... but then that quickly falls apart. If conventional technique were the measure of greatness, where would that put Marty Friedman? The angle of his wrist looks like a broken bird wing ffs. And Richie Blackmore using his thumb to fret the low G note in Burn - that's strictly a no-no according to traditional rules. But these are the very things make the players the unique individuals they are, and that IMO is the more valuable than conformity to conventional technique.

Maybe Pata is in fact more reliable (when he's not too drunk/lazy/apathetic to keep the sloppiness out of his playing, that is) but I enjoy listening to hide's playing wayyy more, by far. There are a few exceptions - Pata's solo in Sadistic Desire is incredibly moving, though I do tend to prefer the old version.

Anyway, Sugizo's better than both of 'em so haters can suck it ;D

Riiiight, because it wasn't hide who wrote songs like Scars and Drain, pushing X into their current direction? lulz.

Sure..I don't mean that all those details are necessary for a good tone (although that's what this topic is about) but PERHAPS there are people who are interesed in those details to modify their guitar, which does not have to cost much, to match it close to the guitar of HIDE..

And still, all you need is the basics I listed up there. The Peavey is nothing more than a JCM800 copy of the preamp schematic with a 6L6 power section, and some bells and whistles. You can get 99% of the way there with any EMG 81 equipped mahogany guitar and a Marshally sounding amp (I recommend Splawn by far). Any typical overdrive pedal will tame the highs a bit and hype the midrange frequencies - this is a useful effect to kick in for solos, so that you can contrast a *slightly* scooped rhythm tone with a rounder, smoother lead tone. Apart from that, don't worry about the details. hide's tone just is not THAT unique.

8
It is not EMG. The guitar in art of life had exposed coils on the bridge pickup unlike his older guitars.

As for which model pickup... I'm guessing Dimarzio. hide never used Fernandes pickups, he also never used the bolt-on models.

You guys are really overthinking it. Just any mahogany body guitar with an EMG 81 and a Marshall JCM800-style amp overdriven with a tubescreamer will do.

lol. hi there, wick :P

Dark Shadow: what you're hearing is a Fernandes sustainer system, not an effect.

Dead End start at around 1 min and 20 secs.
if it isn't a reunion gig sorry i haven't seen many lives of Dead End.

EDIT: i think it is since it looks modern.

No lol. That's Club Citta in 1990.

^ In my humble opinion, you guys are seriously underestimating the inexplicably unpredictable nature of alcohol in the presence of an-already fragmented and disorder-plagued psyche. It can quite literally change day to night in an instant and trigger all kinds of dark and latent impulses buried deep, deep, deep below the surface...

hide / Re: Two new hide guitar models released by Fernandes
« on: May 15, 2009, 04:51:14 PM »
There's no doubt that they're cheap imitations of the ones hide played. Even at the 340 level, my guess is the electronics and wood selection are inferior. BTW, I love how they randomly bumped all the prices up. 145 used to be 120. They need actual model NAMES @_@; Blah, no, this whole 'signature' line is hopeless. If you want to get a hide-esque guitar, you're way better off buynig a $700 BC Rich exotic classic mockingbird and swapping the pickups for EMG 81 and Dimarzio SD -_-; that'd play better than any of these Fernandes hide wannabes

It was completely re-recorded O.o

So basically it's exactly everything we've already seen before...

18
No... I've been over this before other forums, but once again...

The S-VIII has:
22 frets
P90/single coil/single coil configuration (3 pickups)
Gotoh GE101TS Vintage-style bridge

And the 'mystery guitar' he used with X has:
24 frest
humbucker/single coil configuration (2 pickups
Original Floyd Rose locking-style bridge

Clearly different guitars.
As I said, my guess is it's simply an S-II with the chrome top. It's nothing we've seen before.

My whole point IS that hide is gone.  AND he would NOT want his fans to speculate on how he died, accident, suicide, murder, alien abduction.. any of that.. NOR would he want his fans to be bickering and rude to each other over the whole subject.

So... we can't speculate about hide's death but you feel free to presume to know what hide would've or wouldn't have wanted? Wow. Someone explain that one to me.

Are you KIDDING? Kyo is one of the most exciting frontman in the history of VK! >.<

In a way.. I have to agree with Hypno.  The fact remains, he's gone.  There will always be speculation.. but it all boils down to, the only one who REALLY knows is gone.

I don't mean to sound cold and unfeeling, but this is something that I feel isn't really a good topic to be discussed.  For his memory's sake, he's gone.. just let the poor man rest.  All this speculation, rumoring, and people depressing themselves when nothing can be done for it is NOT what hide would have wanted his fans to do.  Nor would he want anyone to die the way he did.. the fact being, it was accidental.  I can't imagine that's a nice way to go.

What? "the only one who REALLY knows is gone" followed by "the fact being, it was accidental" makes no sense at all.

I'm sorry, but I don't see how it does NOT matter? If it were indeed intentional suicide (at least at the moment) that pretty much changes our whole perspective on how we view his life and works. Similarly, based on Percy Bysshe Shelley's suicide by drowning, the meaning of his later poems such as "Stanzas Written In Dejection Near Naples" take on a whole new meaning... particularly the section that alludes to drowning.

No, if there was something brewing in hide's mind, even in the BACK of hide's mind, it is of the utmost importance... of course, unless it isn't of the utmost importance to YOU (indefinate plural) are a listener/fan... in which case, we might establish that you as an audience have no interest in critically listening to his works. As I said, such ignorance only deprives us from a deeper sense of appreiciaton of hide's music.

I mean, while we're at it, let's just ignore the fact that Yoshiki's father committed suicide, and the sacrifices his mother made by selling the business due to her faith in Yoshiki's dreams... Well now, the whole legendary tale of X's success is starting to lose it's glamour a bit, no?

Anway, believe what you want, but I firmly stand by my philosophy that paying attention to both intrinsic and extrinsic literary analysis go hand in hand with being a true fan. Ignorance is bliss, but only very superficially.

Now THAT is indisputable. There are just two choices - carefully analysing the information that we have or ignoring it just to ease the pain of dealing with what MIGHT have been the truth. Seems like most go with the latter.
