Other Bands / Sigh

I only like Scorn Defeat. I'm not into all that arty avantgarde shit, give me Sabbat any time of the day, who are about my favorite band of all time.

That said, I don't think both Sabbat and Sigh can be classified as black metal. Sigh is more avantgarde stuff, while I'd say Sabbat lean heavily towards oldschool speed/thrash metal and NWOBHM bands.

the term avant-garde is thrown around too much, especially in metal, very few bands tagged that name fit it.  I would describe Sigh more as experimental black metal.  I can't say I've really ever thought of them as an "arty" band, they just sound crazy and different to me.

Just put on what you like.If you're really into jrock put heaps on.

I wouldn't just put a whole lot of different genres just so you can say you hall all of them under the sun on you're eye pod.Not saying you've done that of course.

yea definitely, there are a bunch of genres that I don't have on my ipod simply because I haven't found any bands I like in those genres yet.  I do like having a large assortment of them because I like to hear all the different sounds that come from all over the world.

Nice, there's good music in every genre  :) I'm all for it and find it rather sad when people "discover" Jrock all fo a sudden and they completely ignore other musik.

Aaah techno, I believe it's among the most hated music genres, along with hiphop and pop.

I used to see a lot of hate for techno from the people who were into classic rock and stuff because the musicians "aren't actually playing anything", but I've been finding more and more people are open minded about it.

I've been gone for a while, been going through a lot of changes musically.   My ipod used to be mostly JRock, now there's barely any on it (X Japan and a few others got to stay).   Just wanted to say hi again and see whats been going on with the rest of you?

Hey  :)

What's on your ipod now?

A lot of metal, and a lot of other random stuff.  I'm hoping eventually to have stuff from each genre so there's some jazz, techno, flamenco, surf rock, roma, and the list goes on.

Offtopic / "Rules" about wearing band shirts to concerts?
« on: March 08, 2008, 06:30:08 PM »
I never heard of this rule as an American concert-goer,  I see a lot of people wearing the band shirts and a lot of people wearing other stuff.  I know personally there are a lot of bands I'd like to see live, and I couldn't afford shirts for all of them, so if I go to a concert and I don't have that band's shirt I'd probably wear a different band's shirt.  It's a cool way to meet people sometimes, good excuse to go up and talk to someone you don't know if they're sporting a shirt for a band you like.

Other Bands / Enough with the word "Jrock"!
« on: March 08, 2008, 06:23:20 PM »
Oddly enough I've noticed that this tag only applies to the more mainstream japanese bands.  I've never heard Sigh get called "JRock" everyone just knows them as a crazy black metal band from Japan.  But yea I agree it's one of the many MANY bad genre names out there.

TV / Movies / Anime / Harry Potter
« on: July 26, 2007, 01:50:26 PM »
Did anyone else grow up with Harry Potter?  Because it seemed to me thats how the stories were meant to be read.  The first one was more child oriented, and the stories got more and more mature each time.  I started reading Harry Potter in the 5th grade and just finished the 7th book in between high school and college.

I know the stories are great and even adults can enjoy them, but did anyone else here sort of grow up with Harry Potter at around the same rate he did?

Does anyone have a video of a Yoshiki Drum Solo in his early X years before he got injured and stuff?

And enough with the debating Yoshiki vs. Joey, lets just all agree that Billy Cobham is an amazing drummer.

Yeah, when I was at JRock revolution festival, I was bewildered by the ignorance around me.  Loads of people were just there to cosplay and most of them had only heard of Miyavi, and others were only there because they were Japanese and hadn't heard any bands at all before (I had all 9 of them on my ipod before I even knew about the concert).

Then what was worse was when they were playing X Japan videos in between bands, I heard the people behind me say "Didn't their singer die or something?" and their friend said "No it was their drummer." It really ticked me off that they thought Yoshiki was dead when he was the only reason they were able to go to such a huge Japanese concert.

Thats why they need to expand their fan-base beyond the anime fans.  Because even if they can draw a big crowd, a lot of the people there will know very little about their music and are just there to see them.

Right, Miyavi is the only member guilty of fan service.  Cause Gackt would never stoop to that level and do something like dry hump one of his guitarists during a concert.

It makes sense in the short term, but unless their idea of "conquering the west" is gackt fans + miyavi fans + sugizo fans + yoshiki fans(Which will overlap for a lot of people), they aren't going to get the popularity they want at an anime convention.  The more they do stuff like that, the more they get labled as an anime band instead of a japanese band.

I think they need to do what Dir En Grey did and go on tour with american bands.  Sure they won't be the center of attention, and probably not that many people will have come to see them, but if their music is solid and people like it, they will want to hear them again, and they will get more popular.

Before Dir En Grey played Family Values, none of my friends had heard of them.  Afterwords, every time I mention listening to J-Rock to someone the response was always "Hey have you heard of Dir En Grey?"

I personally like the J, because J-Rock has a very different feel from other music(to me at least).  I have lots of music from all over the world and usually I can't tell the difference between american, german, french, or whatever except sometimes from the vocals.  But when I have my ipod on shuffle and a J-Rock song comes up, it's pretty obvious it's japanese even before I heard the vocals.

I dunno enough music theory to explain why but theres a very different feel to J-Rock.  I know part of it is it always seems that japanese artists don't mind experimenting with their music as much, but theres more than that.

For me it's a lot harder to label japanese music with sub-genres because theres so much of a different feel to it.  So I like being able to just call it J-Rock and not have to worry about sub-genres.

I will agree though that it's not really a good genre name, since it doesn't apply to all japanese music and I'm sure there are some bands outside of japan that have similar types of music.  But unfortunately genre names are always terrible, and there are so many poorly-named genres and fake genres made up by fans that cause bands to get mis-labled or be labled poorly.  I think the current genre system we have is shit for the most part and think it's in need of some big changes.

Not gonna happen though, oh well.

Edit:

Yeah I think that was a really dumb idea for S.K.I.N. to play at an anime convention.  Over here in America anime fans are in a minority and severely looked down upon.  A lot of people won't touch a band that gets associated with anime, regardless of how the music sounds.  All plans to "conquer the west" will fail miserably if all they do is cater to anime fans.

I just ordered two of his CDs and I'm really excited to get them.  One of them has 28 musicians in the credits O_O.  Thank goodness they're not all playing for every song, as crazy as I like my music I think that'd be a bit too much for me.  But there should be some good diversity between songs so I'm excited!

For some reason the past few weeks I've had issues logging in, It seems to be quite random.  When I click log in it does everything as it normally would except I'm not logged in like I should be.  No matter how many times I log in and no matter from where it won't let me in.  Sometimes I have to restart my computer several times before I can finally log in.  Anyone else have this issue, or know how I can fix it?

I haven't really been that excited from what I've seen so far, but everything I've seen was on crap quality recording, so I'm trying not to judge to harshly.  I really want to get a CD to hear their sound, but I have insanely high expectations for this band, and if they don't meet up with them I'll be severely disappointed.

Seven Samurai - Amazing dialog, something incredibly interesting is always going on, which for a 3 1/2 hour movie is amazing.  Cinematography is beyond epic my favorite movie.

Barry Lyndon - Again amazing dialog and Cinematography.  Some absolutely breathtaking shots and overall a sweet as hell film.  Would take me forever to do an in-depth analysis of all the reasons it kicks ass.

Gojira - the original and best godzilla movie.  Really pioneered lots of suitimation techniques and just overall and outstanding movie.

The Street Fighter - First movie to be rated X for violence only  .  Also has Sonny Chiba, my favorite action star of all time.  And although it usually gets labeled as another cheesy Japanese action film, I thought the script is pretty above average, and the cameraman makes really good use of Rack Focuses for some awesome shots.  Very Enjoyable.

Riki-Oh - Blood.  Lots of Blood.  .

I like Black Metal.........

But in all seriousness, most of my friends who are very open minded rock/metal fans only have a problem with rap since theres not really any talent in the music.  But I think funk is pretty sweet and I could probably get into some of the other genres if I had the time.  Also remember Funk Metal was pretty big in the 80s.

Was a bit of a stretch to say their similar, especially the huge difference in the type of metal they play.  Just figured the people here probably like metal with more depth to it than just fast instruments.  And this is another really good band that although they can play really fast, have a lot more to their music than that.  In actual sound nothing alike, but I guess you could kind of say they take the same approach to music as X Japan.  I dunno, maybe I'm just being dumb like always.

This is a new Australian metal band that is gaining popularity really quickly.  They kind of remind me of X Japan in that they have really long complex compositions, that are metal but take influences from other genres and also utilize other instruments such as acoustic guitar and violin in slower more emotional portions.  Also their drummer was a finalist in the worlds fastest drummer competition in Australia.  Biggest difference though is that they're really hardcore black metal rather than X Japan's older speed metal.

Not trying to say these guys are as good as X, but if you like modern black metal and X Japan's style you might like these guys too.

Never knew class of the artist was brought into the discussion.  I'm well aware that Miyavi isn't in the same class as the others, they all reshaped the JRock industry, especially Yoshiki, and Miyavi is just the new guy.  I do however think he is still an above average musician and can be extremely diverse and creative.  I think his style and ideas will add a lot to the music even if he's not in the same class.  I'm more excited to see at what amazing things they'll all be able to produce together, rather than what each individual one does.
