So, do you play any instruments? If you do so, which and for how long have you been playing them now?
I've been playing guitar for about 6 months or more now (I don't have a teacher), and I LOVE IT. I don't know why I refused to learn how to play any instrument when I was younger, now I really regret I didn't start earlier.
As for others, I can play the piano a bit and most Orff instruments ( :P ). I also do have an ocarina at home (at the time I bought it I was convinced I really needed one), can't play it, tho.
Oh yeah, and if my voice counts as an instrument, I use that one very much as well
-
I play guitar and sing in a band. I've played for a few years, tho I did go to some acoustic guitar lessons when I was younger. I wen't about a year to those lessons and then had enough of them, they kinda sucked ass, but it's good that I wen't there, I learned all the basics and now it was much easier to pick up the electric guitar.
-
I play guitars (yes, both electric and acoustic and some classical) f or about 6 or 7 years and elec. bass for a year now..
was playing with 2 bands before.. but that was a long time ago.. don't have that kind of time to really do it nowadays. and lack of practice...
-
i play the guitar for 2 and a half years.electric and i looooooooooooooove it xD
and i sing
in some way :P i love singing.i dont have a band though because we are 3 friends and we all play the guitar XDD
i want to learn how to play the bass and the piano^^
Yoshiki and Taiji are the main reasons ;)
-
and what about the results PN?
just kidding....
*well,maybe not  *
-
now you make me want to see you pout
and I cant play any instruments
-
Why not? just try it in front of the mirror :P
you Love biting people?
-
Try to be... I Love when see his pout :P
noooooo Toshi is mine.... well Yoshiki too... I want bite them first before you did
-
I play piano... well for almost 16 years now... So don't ask about my age, OK?
And I used to learn guitar but it doesn't work... hahaha
-

And she can sing too :)
And as for me, I can't play much on guitar and no other instruments either... But I sing... Not as in solo but in choior and an a capella band.
-
I have been playing piano non-actively for.. I gotta count now. I started when I was.. seven. So it'll be ten years this year. I haven't been taking classes since I was 12, but I play piano by myself at home. At the moment I'm practising left hand notes for Tears and Amethyst.
I also have acoustic guitar, and I truly would like to have some teaching with it. I have tried to learn by myself, but my hurries and school things and like that have come to the way. At least when I'll move out from home in one and half years, I'll buy myself an electric guitar, or bass if I find it more attractive.
I also can sing a little - well, I was at music class when I was young and I sang in choir and like that, but nowadays I don't do it anymore. Usually just sing when I'm alone or with my friends.
-
Oh, hypno. It's embarrasing
-
Dammmit, age competition, I have missed something interesting...
I hope there are some sofas around, as I'll very gladly just sit, watch your lovely debate and then invite you both for something interesting to drink.
(NOOO just not in Japan, I do not think I need to get financially ruined for the first time I invite someone to something.)
Now onto the matter of singing, didn't you by chance think of recording your singing some day? :P
-
Wow, seems like no one plays drums here
-
Wow, seems like no one plays drums here
Yeah, and it's a shame. If things go like I want them to, I'll give it a shot soon.
Pretty late to start at 19 though :/
-
Really want to start playing drums but am torn between that and guitar.
I know I could play drums well too :P
-
Dangle, it is nice you have quite a high thought of yourself, but I'd personally prefer to hear first and judge later 8)

Well I happened to hear a clip... And she really can play piano well, check out the topic here (http://www.x-freaks.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=197) if you haven't yet ;)

Bleh I meant I know I would be fast, dunno about keeping good rythm to be honest. And it is really the only thing I have thought myself high of, having fast arms. You know when you have been in fights :P
I know I'll never make it as guitarist, therefore no high thought of myself :(
-

haha.. drums is pretty hard..
learned a bit from the drummer of my friend's band.. man.. the freaking coordination haha..
and i wasn't even playing with a 6 piece...

na it just takes practice.. lots... i'm a lazy guitarist so hahaha
but ya for drums, rhythm is the most important. but like i said.. everything is based on practice and getting used to it..
-
Wow, seems like no one plays drums here
Actually, I learnt how to play drum while I was around Grade 9. But I quite because drumming alone is not that fun since I don't have any chance to settle up a band. (Most of my friend were a kind of girls who concentrate only on studying. )
And PN, I don't think it's appropriate to talk about the age in this forum. Let keeps it secret. hahaha
-
ive been playing guitar for almost 8 years now... learnt by myself , i have both acustic (almost 40 year old guitar with 12 string :) ) and electric too :) and i love it.. i do it everyday for at least 3 hours
-
12 string? wow. that's impressive. I only tried a 12 strings once in a music shop, but that's about it.
the sound is very diff.
Its almost as different from an Ovation to a regular Acoustic Guitar.
-
that guitar has been on the family for quite a long time my dad got it given when he started playing at like age of 12 i think and well , its on my hands for now until i have kids :p
and yes the sound is very different , but while playing full chords songs it sounds much nicer , more complete
-
ya i totally hear ya.
the sound is pretty sweet but i never really thought about a 12 strings.. i bought a 7 strings before played for a while then sold it..
-
well , the concept of a 7 string guitar is way different than a 12 string , since well at least mine 12 string is played like a regular 6 string but you have to push 2 string at the same time and this creates the "complete" sound that i was talking about because u can hear higher notes and lower notes all over the place wich is really good :)
-
I sang for about 6 years, played trumpet for 2 years, and right now I wanna learn drums.

ya i'm fully aware of that.
i was just stating that i owned a 7 string for a while. but never really came across my mind that i'll buy a 12 strings.
i'm still more into elec more than acous..
ever tried that baritone guitar fernandez came out with? it sounds pretty good
-
How is the 12 string guitar tuned btw? Is it like the lowest string E, and then the next is E but an octave higher, the next A, octave higher A etc. ?
-
standard tunning would be:
E
E
B
B
G
G one octave higher
D
D one octave higher
A
A one octave higher
E
E one octave higher
and it sounds really funny because all the octave higher strings are thinner than the regular ones :) like if in a regular guitar you play 3rd and 6th string at the same time , that kinda sound
-
I play guitar just rythem ..
I also play bass,my fave instrument so i can play it very well..
keyboard..
drum,I tried to play drum like yoshiki but I end up with injured hand and tendon...

haha it's not easy to play exactly like yoshiki... his drum notes are quite complex.. and very fast
-
yeah 8) it's very complex and very very fast...
yoshiki is awsome...
I wish I could be like him someday....be a popular musician..
-
I play the drums. I dont have a set at home. I would air drum and I've been doing that since I was Gr.8. I play for the Church usually every Sunday. I self thought in Piano. I also have a Bass where I just play around with it.
-
I play.... the piano, only a veeery little and I am learning it.... but.... yeah. I used to play a little, some years ago. Fingers still recognize the moves and that I do not, who cares. I can learn.
(Chloe's friend sharing an account temporarily.)
-
ive been tought how to play guitar over and over again but for some reason we just dont mix ive been playing drums for umm about 3 years now(i have a really nice set) not counting the years i played on pots and pans (true story)
ive been playing some piano sense i was 13 or so but i never really leaned how to play properly just what key to hit but now im learning piano good.
ive played harmonica for a while but im no epert but icould play endless rain on it and i think thats all i know how to play unless you count an orcorina as something and the recorder wich i suck at both i can play cartoon therme songs on these and thats all.
yeah i like to experimen as you can tell
-
I play bass.. its been almost a year now .. and a bit of drums (both instruments self-taught)
I started playing bass cos of X.. They were my real inspiration
but lately i've been playing Dir en Grey and L'arc en Ciel rather than X-Japan
cos some of Taiji's bass lines are still too hard for me.. and Heath's are too boring.. (no offense)
-
...some of Taiji's bass lines are still too hard for me.. and Heath's are too boring.. (no offense)
I absolutely agree with you. Taiji's bass lines are awesome.
Btw, I should ask you to perform some songs next time we meet. :D
-
hehe.
I play bass..But I'm a noob.Taiji really inspires me
-
I tried studying the classical guitar like 5 years ago, but I had no inspiration then (I only encountered X Japan last year) so I had no overwhelming desire to be good at it.
Now I'm learning the Bass by myself and through guitar pro, is practising some of the Basslines for X songs. :)
-
I have an electric guitar..I can't play it though...(yet) <_<
-
Drums!! Hell Yeah!
and i can do yoshiki's 8)
-
sorry to disappoint you but i don't think that you can play as good as him XD
-
sorry to disappoint you but i don't think that you can play as good as him XD
but i can play X's songs not like him but i can do it :P
-
well thats sth else.i also play X Japan songs but I NEVER dare to say that i'm as good as hide or Pata. :P
-
i never said i was better that yoshiki, or in the same level or something.....
i just said i can play X's Songs!!
and theres nothing special with that
lots of persons in this world can.... :x
hehe :P
-
lol
at first i didnt the:hehe :P part and i got worried :P
yeah well to me,it was like:"i rock,i play drums like Yoshiki does"
but i was wrong XD
-
haha, the hehe part was like trying to say that i was not mad or anything...
but i can play drums and even better than yoshiki!!!
just kidding, really...yoshiki is my god
-
hehe
hide is my god at that section<3
-
hehe funny that u say that :o cause hide is good.. but to me he is far from being a guitar god... but he surely did his job on X..
-
well he has helped me a lot with guitar thats why i say that^^
i have almost abandoned my guitar before listening to his playing...
-
I play acoustic guitar for about 2 years now, but started it back when I was about 10, stopped playing when the replacement frets(matches) fell off the guitar. Been playing electric guitar for about a week..
-
Woah, first one to reply to this in over a month..
Been playing trumpet for 4 years and just been mucking around with guitar and bass for a while, nothing serious. Its pretty cool to just jam with mates bands with either of them.
-
friday, trumpet sounds great. Do you play jazzy stuff?
Sounds like you have some funky jams going on :D
-
Haha, most of the time its crappy concert band stuff, but some of the time we do sorta in the style of Cat Empire or some CAKE songs or play and old riff or the twelve bar blues and add a bit of improvising here and there when we are bored.
I'm hoping to at some point to learn a bit more jazz to just show off a bit :P
It was awesome last year, had some of my mates from a death metal band and others from a hard rock one, my best mate who plays alto sax and myself, and we covered Louie Louie, sounded bloody awesome :D
-
Sounds like a wild fusion
Yeah, learning some jass guitar would def. help me to improve my skills, as well...but I'm unbelievebely lazy :P
-
Jazz guitar would sound awesome. How are you going with it overall?
At the moment we are trying to put Hotel California -Eagles, together. On the Farewell 1 Tour, there is a trumpet solo that sounds so awesome, and its quite high at some points so its going to be a great challenge :D
-
I'm...getting better, really slowly, tho (I'm sure I'd be better by now if I had a teacher but meh). Actually I realized that I'm batter than I was some month ago because I stopped trying to play most of X's songs :P
that sounds really nice, if there will happen to be some footage (audio/video) I'd love to see/hear some :D
-
Piano :) .. since 10 years now..
Guitar since 3-4 months
-
Hey ferret, at least you can brag about being self taught :P
It will probably be later in the year when we get together and play the song, but ill make sure we get some footage so i can post it :D Have you got any footage of yourself playing?
Woah myuu, 10 years?! Damn, you must be awesome at it!! Hows guitar going also?
-
Hey ferret, at least you can brag about being self taught :P
You can only brag if you're GOOD, right?
I'm looking forward to hear your stuff :D
Have you got any footage of yourself playing?
You don't wanna hear that, believe me..or it's rather ME who doesn't want you to hear it  In 6 years or so, I'll share something, I promise, hehe.
Yeah, myuu, have you started playing acoustic or electric guitar?
-
"Oooh, yeah, i'm self taught, listen to this!!" (Breaks string)
Haha, i mean when you're pro, saying you're self taught sounds so much more um....awesome :P
Not even just a little clip? One chord? Scale? Something?!
-
"Oooh, yeah, i'm self taught, listen to this!!" (Breaks string)
That made me laugh so hard, thanks
Haha, i mean when you're pro, saying you're self taught sounds so much more um....awesome :P
I don't know, you're right but I'd rather already be awesome at playing WITH help than lousy without.
Not even just a little clip? One chord? Scale? Something?!
One chord sounds fair, I'll play two in a row if I'm in good mood :P Nah, just take a look at your pms every once in a while, maybe you'll soon find something
-
Woah myuu, 10 years?! Damn, you must be awesome at it!! Hows guitar going also?
well I had a long time no development at my playing because I hated to play everytime classic (I like classic, but not EVERYTIME) so I practiced nothing for the lessons..
Since a half year I'm developing my playing better than in the last 3-4 years I think lol.. I've started playing by ear, making piano cover songs of videogame melodies and original rockband songs :).. Makes a lot of fun!
The guitar is developing a bit slow but ok, because I prefer the piano but I'm going to practice more when summer vacation starts :)
-
Sorry it took so long to reply myuu, been away from the computer for a while.
Wow, awesome, do you have any clips of that? What videogame melodies have you done?
Good luck with the guitar as well.
-
hey friday,
you can see something here (http://youtube.com/myuuji),
but the videos are few months old.. I'm practicing since 3 months like hell. The posted songs now sounding much better than they do in the clips.
Now I'm waiting for my new piano, which arrive in 2 weeks :)
-
Woah...Thats some damn fine playing there.. and you've improved even more?!
-
i play electric guitar, have for 2 years, and i play a little violin and piano.
-
guitar, bass guitar, piano, harmonica...
-
Finally I have a chance to do what I've wanted to do for a couple years now, I have a chance to take Cello lessons! I'm really excited, IMO cello has the most beautiful sound in the world.
-
I play guitar :) i'm gonna pick up violin and bass in december =)
-
I play guitar

In two weeks, but as a dancer.
-
In two weeks, but as a dancer.
Classy.
Maybe you can work your way up to DTR backup dancer.
LOL my thoughts exactly!
-
Violin
-
Guitar - 6 years
Bass guitar - 2 years
Drums - 2 years
Keyboard - 4 years but I suck at it ...
I also play in a Rock band, playing just covers ... and also I have a Death Metal band.
=)

Wow man that's really great .I think you have almost covered everything.I only play guitar.
-
I have played piano about six years and I have been singing all my life.
-
I've been playing the violin for 13 years; not exactly the most 'rock friendly' instrument out there despite what the likes of Sugizo can do with it.
I also have a guitar (which I can't play), although having only four strings on it doesn't exactly help my cause.
The mandolin is another instrument I one day hope to play.
-
I play...
Drums - 5 years
Piano - Difficult to say really. I played it for about 2-3 years during high school, and then was forced to give it up until recently.
Guitar - It's only an occasional thing. I'm not good at it.
I play drums every week though. Can't get enough. xD
Mostly though, I use recording studios to record, mix and master other bands, and use music software on my laptop to either edit (after mastering) or to create my own digital compositions.
-
I have played piano for 25 years with a recent 8 year break, but I'm playing again and
I started clarinet in grade 6 and just started again this year.
My oldest started guitar this year so it's a bit loud in our house.
I don't know what my neighbors think but I haven't heard any knocking on the wall! :D
-
Ah you all guys so impressive.... I just play drums, guitar and piano (which got my all time favorite thanks to the only one single moment, one single phrase when i was listening to his piano solo. that was the moment of my life :) :
-
I used to play drums, don't really have the time or space to do so nowadays unfortunately :( I hope to get back into it one day.
-
I'm a classically trained Clarinet player (really cool, I know)
I also play Sax, Drums, Vibraphone/Marimba, Timpani, and I took my first piano lesson 2 weeks ago.
-
My main instrument is guitar (electric, acoustic, 6/12, etc). I took lessons for three years and then went out on my own. I've been playing, oh, 20+ years now. However, I probably sound like I've been playing for 20 minutes :D
I played bass in bands in high school and college. I played drums on my own recordings (had a MP3 site up 10 years ago) but my skills have gone to s***. I dabble with the keyboard as well. I first started with the saxophone but probably couldn't do much with one nowadays. I have a harmonica around here somewhere, too.
I recently started taking voice lessons to improve in this area as I've never had confidence in my voice. That will change...hopefully....
:)
-
My main instrument is bass, which I am self-taught at. Been playing for five years or so.
Guitar on the other hand, which I play around with on ocassion, is a totally different story. I can play pretty simple stuff, but anything involving chords, not so much.
-
I played the piano until high school. I really miss it, but I didn't have the time. Maybe I'll pick it up again someday.
I tried learning how to play guitar, and but it turns out my fingers are too short to play barre chords! They can stretch just fine, but my index finger just isn't long enough. Maybe I'll look for a model with a thinner neck or pick up a 3/4 guitar one of these days, but that was really frustrating...
So now I just sing karaoke and play Rock Band whenever I get the chance. =P
-
I play the flute xD
and I play the guitar for 7 years now.
hide made me want to learn it.
I want to learn the piano anf the violin.
-
I play a little bit of bass guitar and keyboards..
My main instrument is the guitar both in acoustic and electric. I've been playing for a few years.. on and off.. but it's only now that I'm actually learning to properly read music. So I'm a proud beginner all over again! ^__^

Yep, definitely try getting a smaller-bodied guitar with thinner neck. Cheers and goodluck!
-
I've played bass since I was 13, but I didn't play it for a whole year (15-16) because I had to quit my lessons and...dunno, but I felt like the worst bassist in the world....
Last year a friend introduced me to a guy who was looking for a bassist for his band and I began playing again (: looks like I just needed a little motivation xD
I don't know much about music theory as well. Making me read a music sheet is like making me reading in russian; I have a good tecnique, so I just play, but I'd love to take proper music lessons someday.
My greatest dream is to play drums, but my parents wouldn't let me xD I'd also love to play piano later on, we have one at home but only my boyfriend plays it....
-
I like to play guitar. Bass guitar sure is an interesting instrument. In my opinion, once you have mastered the guitar lick, then grab your metronome and set it to 80 bpm. This speed is very important.
-
I like to play the Guitar and Drum, they both are good instrument to play. It gives the great entertain and i am feel relax when i am play this instrument.
-
I've been playing drums for a few years now. Other then that I wouldn't mind learning guitar and piano.
-
I play people's nerves. Although lately it's people playing mine. :|
-
LOL nage!
I still dont play any instrument, aside of Wii Rock Band drums. ;D
I am trying to learn how to play guitar, but I am simplly lacking time to do so, boooo :(
-
Haha, even though some people think Rock Band or guitar hero instruments don't count, I feel they do in a way. It requires timing skills and reading "note" on the fly which is what you have to do playing an actual instrument anyway! And the drums even more so, as you are doing what you would be doing on a real drum kit anyway? :P
I learnt to play Alto Clarinet in high school, played for 5 years...that was 6 years ago and as I rented the instrument, I haven't played since :\ But I got a piano during my final year of high school and still have that. Even though I don't play often and have never had lessons, I can play reasonably ok!
-
I play keyboard! :D I especially love organ-sounds, like Jon Lord in Deep Purple. And of course, cheesy 80s effects like Europe. (It's the final counnttdooownnn!! pupupupupuuu! pupupupuuuu!)
-
I started taking piano lessons 3 or 4 weeks ago. It's the first musical instrument that I'm learning. I know that I am pretty late, but at least I finally started. I've been wanting to learn piano for many many years, but never had the time/money/opportunity to do so. Finally a dream is coming true. ;-)
-

Wow! I am so happy for you! I wanted to learn to play the piano since I was a kid.
When I was in the primary school, we had music lesson. I hardly understand how to read the sheet music even thought after many lessons. Then I decided that I am not the music type at all. I think the idea of being able to play and the reality is quite different. Which X song do you want to learn to play? For me it would be unfinished.

I actually showed my teacher "Endless Rain" and asked her "When will I be able to play something like this?" She was a little surprised and said that it's a bit too complicated for now, but maybe in a few months. So I guess that's what I'm going to try to play first...
-
Uhm...
Started with flute at the age of 4... Play guitar (classical trained) for approx 22 years now. Drums about 15 years.
Also I play some other instrumnts a little bit... piano, started playing bass-guitar about a year ago, ...
Used to play in different bands back in the days. started with Punkrock as a vocalist and guitarplayer, later switched to drums and played more Jazz/funk/blues/stoner rock stuff. Besides that I've made electronic and also chipmusic with old synthesizers and Atari computers. Sometimes with a simple GameBoy...
Yes... long time ago ;)
Oh, atm I am learning Rose Of Pain on guitar. It's such a beautiful song to play
-
So jealous here, everyone playing multiple instruments and such. I never learnt any instrument, I come from a small village where there was no real possibility and also we lacked the money to buy an instrument. My granddad played violin but he died soon after I was born, so the whole music thing just escaped me :( I'm kind of curious whether I would be able to learn now (I'm 35). I've been fascinated by the bass guitar for a long time. But it's a huge commitment to buy an expensive bass and then find out that one sucks at playing. :( so I am unsure whether to venture on this road or not.
-
Tried acoutic guitar, but I guess it's not my tool.
-
I started playing flute both at school and private lessons when I was 5 years old, went on through school with it, through high school and into college. I also gave lessons after high school and played in the university orchestra.
I have played piano but not well. I am mostly self taught with that but did have some lessons in college which was kind of a laughable story. LOL. I played what I wanted to play, not what I was supposed to learn and play. Good thing i never got caught doing that as no telling what the instructor would have done.
I've moved all over the country in the past 20 years and somehow, my flute got lost. :o :-[ I'm sure it's here, somewhere but I am still unpacking things and will find it, eventually. Of course, I don't play like I used to. I used to take it with me, everywhere I went and would pull it out and just start playing something, usually something by Tchaikovsky as I am classically trained. But I also would just mimic anything I heard of a rock or jazz song I liked. I miss playing it as it was good for destressing and losing myself in the music.

Now I'm waiting for my new piano, which arrive in 2 weeks :)
You are very good. I've listened to this song 3 times, so far and really like what you have done, here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=7&v=ma3BFoEwjPI
You may never see this as I don't see you on the forum but keep up the good work because you have much potential.

I started playing the guitar when I was 15, it's been on and off for a number of reasons but I've taken it more seriously the last few years. I mainly play rock and metal but something I really like is playing acoustic versions of those songs, like Rose of Pain.
I started playing classical piano when I was 7 or 8. I haven't played in years, as I focused more on guitar and I left the keyboards behind when I moved but I'd like to do it again some day. I wish I never stopped but it taught me a lot of things that stayed with me about theory, reading sheet music, etc.
