Title: Stereotypes you've encountered
Post by: ferret on August 31, 2008, 06:26:34 PM
What stereotypes have you personally encountered? Be it because of your appearance, race, nationality, sex, sexual orientation, age, a hobby, your neighbourhood etc.

Three things that happen to me very often:

1. People assume I like/drink a lot of vodka becuse I'm half Russian. Quite frankly I love to see the disappointment on their faces when I say I don't drink.
2. Often, people start talking to me slowly and in Standard German when I say I'm not originally from Austria. It's funny because until I mention that, they talk really fast and in dialect and I obviously understand them perfectly.
3. Almost everyone assumes I love to party and go out all the time because I'm 20.

Tell me some fun (or not so fun) stuff.

Everybody think I smoke. Probably 'cause of my long hair or whatever... when someone asks me in the street for a cigarette and I say I don't smoke, they look at me like "yeah sure...".
They also think I smoke weed, still 'cause of the long hair. Once I was in the train going to Paris and the guy from the customs just told me "Ok, show me the weed I know you have some...", I was like "WTF ?? I've never smoked of my life EVER :P". Well, I guess he saw I wasn't lying 'cause he left me alone then... that's so BORING.

I'm not a girly girl.My interests are not that girly either.Conclusion: i'm a lesbian

I don't like hip-hop/rap/Conclusion: I don't like black people

I have piercings. Conclusion: I have no personality and i'm OBVIOUSLY an attention whore.

I'm difficult when it comes to relationships,I couldn't care less about my love life. Conclusion: I'm an unorgasmic bitch that cares only about sex.

I don't like candy.Conclusion:I'm anorexic.

these are SOME.xD

Great thread btw!!!

- People think I drink a lot cos I'm finnish.. (the truth: I don't drink hardly ever)
- People think I'm a metalhead cos I have a leather jacket.

- People think I love drinking cus I'm Swedish. Not necessarily untrue!

- In Asia when mentioning where I'm from - Sweden - "AHH that's why you have GOLDEN HAIR" *touch hair* ! Asian stereotype by the way: always having to touch everything.
On a side note, my hair is very dark blonde and I'm not even considered blonde at home. Aren't most blondes are from Finland anyways? :P

- When I go clubbing in an Asian country people usually think I'm just looking for an easy shag.

- In Korea especially people assume you're American, some even use the word yankees when referring to white people in general. And, USA isn't exactly the most popular country in Korea.

And maybe this is a bit unrelated with the subject but... "from?" "Sweden" "I love Swiss chocolate!" is too fucking common in some English-speaking countries ;P

Hahaha, yeah the Switzerland / Sweden confusion in english... duh :P

I remember in a TV series (Friends ?) they joke about Abba being from Switzerland or something like that... :P

- I wear a lot of colorful and kitschy clothes -> I don't have to be taken serious/ am just childish
- The same thought because of my heigth XD ("she's so small and cute" ah >,<; )
- Because I wear miniskirts, high shoes or other "sexy" stuff -> I'm a whore xD (and want strange guys to come on to me :/)

And what kinda bothers me ... That because of my look nobody would ever guess what music I listen to xD (I'm not of any interest for most metallers so xDD) I'm not quite sure what people think about me, when they just see me on the street though ... °_°

I can't think of anything different atm ... |D;

A lot of people seem think that I'm either southern European, Arab or Israeli, while I'm none of the three (I'm Dutch, English and German). So I always get double checked when I travel by plane. ;D ;D ;D

Heard about that too. I've a friend who always get stuck into controls. It's pretty damn sick.

But then again, I also got stuck in controls quite a few times and I look like a 10-year old innocent boy.

XDD Awesome idea for a thread!

Here's mine:
- I wear girly clothes and like to do silly things: people assume I'm a complete idiot/ditz
- I often wear short skirts and almost all my friends are male: I'm a total slut T_T
- I'm human, therefore I must like pizza
- I'm skinny, and can be very picky about food: Anorexic
- I'm shy: I'm arrogant and think I'm better than everyone
- I'm a girly girl: I must prefer romantic comedies over a good 80's action flick (lol)

Generally, I am pretty stereotypical though XD.

Ohhh.. the wonderful-blunderful stereotypes.

Let me see....

I suffer from depression, general and social anxiety disorder and have been hospitalized for them - So.. I'm automatically batshit insane and had to be commited in a straight jacket.

I write alot of sad or angery poetry - Oh.. okay.. so is that what makes ME an Emo?  I thought it was sitting around all dressed in black, with heavy dark makeup and writing such poetry was emo.

I'm from the Southeren United States - so that makes me an uneducated and uncouth redneck.  Wait... I didn't say that right  but I proved THAT particular ignorant stereotype wrong.

I feel pity for the young teenage girls I know and I spend time with them in an 'OLDER SISTER' type of thing - that can't make me be considered a pediphile..

I do not like VULGAR music, regardless of genre - that makes me an Intolorant Racist Bitch of a white girl.

I have neurofibromatosis which causes skin deformations and odd colored markings - When I was in elementary school that had me having AIDS.

I could go on for days... and still not cover all them that I myself have experienced.

On the positive side, some of my best friends are Black AND dislike the same VULGAR music (I love blues, jazz, black gospel music), I have NEVER tested positive for HIV let alone AIDS, I would NEVER harm a child the way a pediphile does... I lived with those horrible memories and would give my life to prevent just one more child from experiencing that.

My poetry being sad and/or angry.  Simple.  Refer to what I just said about Pediphiles.

and don't even get me started on abuse, molestation, incest, all that.

Because they dress really metrosexual?

Though, the "most" meterosexual people must be guys in Japan and Korea and gay is sooo tabu there. Plus they have some really strong views on gender roles ;P

We don't! That's why ze chicks love us and foreign guys call us gay out of puuure jealousy! ;)

Edit:
Perhaps - in order to avoid any confusion - I should add that the gender role views are obviously changing in Japan too but they just didn't come as far as the west has.

I live in Tasmania, so my mother and father are definately cousins. *Plays duelling banjos*

I occasionally wear makeup and straighten my hair so that obviously means i'm gay.

My ex was half filipino, i watch anime and i listen to X Japan so that definately means i have an asian fetish.

I'm from a single parent family and live in a lower socio-economic suburb so that means i should be on the dole with 2 kids from 2 different women and a heroin addict instead of in college.

I'd never assume that about people from Tassie. You do have two heads though, right?

I go to University, so I must be a liberal-minded teenage neo-anarchist. (It makes me feel so horribly old when people find out I'm 23 and look at me as though I'm older than Jesus.)

Also, because I like J-rock and Japanese fashions I must also have a gargantuan anime/manga fetish. (Okay I went through that phase, but it ended 2 years ago :/)

About everything about soldiers I've encountered was not true. Also, female soldier= some super sharp at all situation girla. Or a kind of woman that doesn't cry.

Psychhealth problems= ruined wreck for life.

Talking with certain people= caring about what they say. Quite often, I'm just talking because it makes me simultaneously think easier better on things I really need to solve; people tend to mind verbal side of everything just a bit over much.

I always get the usual "You have long hair, you must like Slayer etc" When most of the time I say "No I'm not a fan of them".  I am not a stereotypical metalhead and i do actually like other music.

Now british stereotypes, I always get told by american's that they don't understand my accent (Now if I was from the north or the west country I would understand) but I come from the Midlands and I speak rather obvious clear english.  Thats one I get alot.

I heard that in russia they banned people from dressing like emos/scene kids. does anyone know if that is true?

A lot of people have mistaken my quietness for arrogance instead of the social anxiety I suffer from and, combined with my general look of long hair, at times random clothing and unshaven face, for some sort of mental retardation. Yet, when I'm clean shaven the quiet, clothes and hair lead people to think I'm a full blown homosexual. Not sure how exactly long hair + unshaven + quiet + bad fashion sense = totally gay, but long hair + shave + quiet + bad fashion sense = retarded, but to some it apparently does. Freakin' weirdos.  :-X

True, that's why you female powerlifters can't keep up with the males (although there's not a whole lot of female powerlifters, hahaha). The female benchpressing record is between 500 and 600 pounds, while the male record is around 1000 pounds.

tend to keep all ill feelings inside to appear cool outside but make us (me and Beth)
their sounding boards most times.

That chart is very true. XD

Haven't ever posted in this thread before but here goes. I'm still in high school mind you.

I don't say a word to people I don't know = I'm out to kill everyone who talks to me. (No one sits next to me on the bus... ;_; )
alternatively, I don't talk much = I don't want company
I have good grades = I do nothing but study all day long.
alternatively, I have good grades = I must like math (I hate math. >.< )
I listen to "that weird Japanese music" = I'm weird and therefore should be left alone by "normal" members of society.
Most of my clothes are black/gray/include skulls or chains = I must be emo/goth (I just like the style...)
I own a guitar = I must automatically be a god at playing it (I actually can't play at all XD)
My friends like to touch me a lot for whatever reason = I must be lesbian for letting them

Mmm that's all I can think of right now. Stereotypes are completely unfair. I wish people would get to know someone before they make a moral judgment about them.

Let's see...
I've never had a boyfriend...this means I'm a lesbian...what's wrong with being picky!? I've never had a girlfriend either!
I like Metal-I'm gothic and emo
I like Japanese music/entertainment...I can speak Japanese.
....You know come to think of it...whether it's japanese or American metal...I still have trouble understanding what they're saying.
I study Pagan religions-I'm a devil worshipper
I study Astrology-I'm a psychic
I'm an adrenaline junkie-I'm suicidal

I'm First Nations there for...
-I live it a tipi.
-I hunt buffalo.
-I wear feathers in my hair
-I lift my hand and say 'HOW' (this one seriously bother's me)
-I go home and put on a buckskin dress and 'modern' clothes are wierd to me.
-I automatically know how to use a bow and arrow
-I ride horses to and from work/school/etc.
-I'm waiting for a cowboy to steal me away on his horse...wtf! Personally I perfer asians...I have an asian fetish

The actual true thing about our tribe is that we have those pretentious last names like "Runs Amongst the Buffalo" I'm serious...this is a real name and Crowshoe, and Strikes with a Gun.
Mine's Yellow Horn...but it's really annoying when I give my last name to people and then they end up calling me "Miss. Horn"...like my middle name is YELLOW!

First stereotypes encountered with foreign people:
~ I'm Finnish, so I drink much. Actually, I don't drink at all.
~ I'm Finnish, so I love Nightwish, the Rasmus, HIM, the 69 Eyes... etc. I do like a bit of Nightwish, but the others I can't stand.
~ All Finnish people love metal. No they don't. I do though.
~ In Finland, polar bears roam in the streets and sun never shines. Last summer I visited UK and it was a lot colder there than in Finland that time!

And then stereotypes that Finns have about Finland-Swedes. I'm a Finland-Swede, which means that I speak also Swedish at home.
~ Finland-Swedes are cheering for Swedish sport teams instead of Finnish ones.
~ Finland-Swedes would still prefer Finland being part of Sweden, like 700 hundred years ago.
~ Finland-Swedes speak perfect Swedish and do good at Swedish in school [it's a compulsory subject in Finnish schools]. I mean, all Finns don't do good at Finnish, so why the fuck would all Finland-Swedes do automatically good at Swedish?

Jesus.

And then the other ones... Ok. I mostly listen to punk, post-punk and goth rock. I've been active in Finnish punk and goth scene for a long time. I look like a punk or old school goth, leather jackets, Martens, mohawk etc.
And of course, that means I can't possibly like japanese music. Not at all! It's very annoying that people think that they didn't make any punk or goth rock in Japan.
Or that listening to punk or goth rock would somehow prevent me from listening to OTHER music too.

And all punks drink all the time, smoke and curse, hate the police, do bad at school, are shoplifters...

Ahhh, stereotypes! A regular part of my life, it seems.

-Because I'm learning to speak Japanese, a lot assume I'm one of those "OMG KAWAII DESU ANIMUUU ^_^" people. Sometimes I'm embarrassed to say I am learning because of that.
-Because I disagree with recycling and dislike environmentalist's views, I hate the environment. This one is annoying.
-I'm very underweight, so people think I'm anorexic. Anorexia is an eating disorder, not a measure of how much you weigh. I have been trying to gain weight for a long time but just am unable to.
-I'm an atheist who hates religion, so I must have no morals or values.
-I use "large, fancy words" for someone my age, so I must be pretentious, trying too hard, or a genius. I get this a lot. Truth is, I'm pretty modest, I don't even notice when I do that and I'm not that smart. Oh well.
-I'm 16 years old, so that must mean I smoke, drink, do drugs and have mass amounts of sex. To be fair, I've only met a handful of teens who don't, so maybe that stereotype is mainly true. I'm just an exception.
-Because I don't think sex is "evil" or "immoral" and shouldn't be so looked down upon by our country, I'm a whore with no values.

Ever since I got out of middle school, I haven't seen as many stereotypes, though. Also because I go to an alternative school: they understand and embrace me as the eccentric I am.
In middle school, they were always taking my wrists looking for proof that I cut myself. (To be fair, I dressed goth then. Now I'm aristocratic/steampunk/paper boy now.)

I always have a f*ing serious face while walking alone on the street (it is not something I control)- I'm an arrogant bastard with egocentrism issues.
I listen to Metal and Japanese Bands - I'm a strange bastard A.K.A "The Diferent One".

I love this topic, bump! xD

As for me...

I iron and dye my fringe red > I'm EMO / Visual
I wear black clothes and I'm pale > I'm Gothic
I wear hide's necklace > I love skulls and such
I like to watch asian movies (not the horror ones) > I don't like western movies
I like asian movies > I like horror movies
I like some asian guys > I don't like western guys
I like asian idol entertainment / new visual kei bands > I'm an annoying fangirl who just cares about the looks
I like ballads and my fav CD is Dahlia > I'm an X JAPAN neo fan
I like metal > I don't like pop
I like pop > I don't like metal
(and such xD)
I don't know song's names or lyrics > I'm not a real fan
I don't like to wear provocative clothes > I'm a nun
I don't party, I don't smoke, I don't drink alcohol > I have a problem
I live in Catalonia and I say I'm Spanish > I'm a fascist
I live in Catalonia and I'm not independentist > I don't know what's going on
I live in Barcelona > I like Gaudí
I live in Spain > I listen to flamenco
I'm a graphic design student and I use PC > I'm an anti-apple
I'm a graphic design student > I probably am a mod or posh

Ok and I have a question... why do tourists buy mexican hats in Barcelona? This is something I'll never understand... xD

I've heard some pretty bad ones about Belgium before.
A Canadian friend of mine visited Belgium and when she went back home, this is what happened:
"That's a nice coat. Where'd you get it?"
"I bought it when I was in Belgium."
"What mall is that in?"

And another:
"I live in Belgium."
"Is that the capital of Brussels?"

My cousin has a friend from Belgium who she brought to a bbq and introduced once. And when she said he was from Belgium a friend of hers replied "Like the chocolate?"
lmao
I was dying to reply "No! Like the waffles!"

Ive encountered so many stereotypes, but most annoying and ridiculous are:
I wear black clothes, metal accessories, chains and necklaces -> I'm a goth\heavy metall fan\biker (or wannabe)
I have a pair of pink gloves with the black inserts and get a strange haircut -> im emo
I love the German language -> it's ONLY because Im a fan of some German band
I listen to metal -> I'm depressed, tend to suicidal or I'm just a very VERY aggressive person who cannot see bright colours in life
I dont drink\smoke -> I don't know how to have a fun and my life is boring
I read scientific books -> Im must be bore\smart alec xD
Im a vegetarian -> I hate all the people
I live in eastern Europe -> I dont know how to use the internet and PC

now I'd like to know how to overcome stereotypes =D

I'm a gamer -> Im not a girl
I'm a girl -> I can't be playing WoW
I'm from south america -> I'm mexican
Spanish is my mother tongue -> My english sucks and I have dark hair, eyes and skin

IRL:

I'm a girl -> i should like women stuff, like clothing and etc
I'm 21 -> I like partying, going to clubs, getting drunk, etc
I'm a graphic designer -> I'm dumb and will only do little drawings for a living ("dibujitos" for whom understands spanish)

nice topic
let´s see:
I´m from Germany - they are all very punktual and hardworking
I´m a single mother with a child - ooh, you poor dear one, but some men do like women with children
I´m growing up in the G.D.R. - ah, you only speek russian, because it was forbiiten to speak english
I´m from Berlin - you do really speak proper german, didn´t know you can (somebody from Bavaria, very lol)
I´m a midwife - cool, that´s something with little babies (nope, it something with adult women)
I´m listening to hard rock, metal and goth music - that´s something with the devil, isn´t it?
I´m vegetarian - so, you don´t drink alcohol too

I must say, all that makes my life funny

Some people think:
I am snob because I look serious but when I start cracking jokes effortlessly, they are like WTH?
I am ignorant but when to all types of discussions they cannot win over me, they are like WTH?
I like boy bands but when they learn I love X Japan, Incubus, Kyoji Yamamoto, Achan, metal & rock music, they are like WTH?
I am strict to my children and grandchildren but when they tell them I'm a cool Mom and grandmom, they are like WTH?

So I guess my appearance doesn't really say what I am capable of...

Title: Re: Stereotypes you've encountered
Post by: ben on March 22, 2011, 09:04:42 AM
I only just saw this topic now, but interesting because I've been thinking about this of late.

I don't know whether I really went through any phases, but in my mid 20's now, I'm finding myself tired of trying to satisfy others and just focusing on whatever is important to me, even though that leaves me kind of as a loner.

I don't dress in any trendy styles or as a rock fan or anything, I just dress whatever feels comfortable to me, even if it makes me look 10 years older than I am. Even my parents make fun of me, the way I fix my hair (keeping it neat rather than trying to make it attractive) and how I dress, but as I said I want to be comfortable not wearing tight jeans.

I hate going to clubs because it is boring, makes me tired, gives me a headache being in such a small space with smoke, and worst of all, dealing with groups of drunks, especially drunk girls throwing themselves at you (which I do NOT see as a positive thing, much to the amusement/concern of other guys)

Rather than focusing on a successful career, being rich etc, I prefer putting my interest to film & writing music and philosophy and whatever little things interest me. I certainly do hold a stable full time job in retail I.T, but, particularly for family, its still not good enough or impressive.

I like to watch alot of old films, especially old American gangster/crime films (e.g. from Robert Mitchum to Gene Hackman) as well as alot of old Japanese Yakuza films (e.g. Ken Takakura, Koji Tsuruta, Toshiro Mifune), people wonder why I'm so obsessed about these things especially my collection of Japanese films and how excited I get when, for instance, I'm watching "Midway" and Mifune comes on the screen and I start reeling off his filmography.

I don't talk much, I don't like making jokes (especially immature jokes about someone being gay etc at work). Yes I take things seriously but I do have a personality, I just prefer to listen to other people, I don't like the sound of my own voice.

Alot of these come together also.. e.g. Not going out alongside having an interest in philosophy - Alot of my family members joke that I'm going to be a priest. Not that it's a bad thing if one wanted to be, but they insult me in front of others especially alot of my younger cousins who all have relationships - I am just not willing to go out of my way to amuse a girl or 'entertain' her, I'd rather live a lonely life than 'force' myself to stay with a girl who is not genuine.

Maybe my problem is I can't be stereotyped haha. People can be so difficult and insincere that I just have anxiety meeting new people now. People take it for arrogance or depression but I just find it awkward making small talk and trying to relate to others when I have nothing in common with them and probably don't even have a reason to be talking to them (e.g. some people at work).

Anyway it was nice to read what everyone else had to say, thanks for sharing. Sorry for my long post.

@ben: I fully agree with you about going to clubs that are crowded with drunk ppl and filled with smoke x_x I think I'd go crazy if I'm forced to visit such a place, haha.
And I find it great when a person just acts in a way that is comfortable to him\her; I believe it to be the only right option, no matter how hard the other people would criticize\ridicule it. Being honest to oneself is a way to happiness.

@ ben: right you are, keep on being like you are and going on with the things you are interested in, for me it´sounds like you are an adult person at your age, not like so many other here and seems to be where you live too, who acting in their mid20s like just becomming teenagers and in their mid30s like even get 20 and do wondering that they won´t taken serious when they are 40. So it´s luck for people like you and also like me that we do have the www., where we can share our interests and are not depending on the folks living next door.

I like Jrock, anime and sushi- i'm a wapanese fantard who hates everything western and uses 'OMG KAWAII DESU' every other sentance. I also get the flipside from anime/Jrock fans for not being a 'proper' fan because I listen to maybe half a dozen bands on any regular basis and only follow anime I actually enjoy rather than whats popular.

I like Gackt, Naruto or any band/anime with 'bishounen' characters- i'm an idiot who's only interested in TEH PRETTY.

I like Asian cinema/ 50s & 70s-era horror- i'm an elitist who refuses to watch anything else.

I dislike Quentin Tarantino movies- I'm only saying it cos i'm trying to be alternative.

I'm an LGBT campaigner- I must be gay

I'm a anti-sexual abuse campaigner- I must have been sexually abused

I have a mental disorder- I'm a hypochondriac or a serial killer.

I have a lot of books on Jack the Ripper- I want to murder people.

one less serious one that i've encounted on the net:

I'm from Nottingham, so I must know everything about Robin Hood!

Okay, I think it's my turn now.

1. I'm very small for a man 1,68m. So everyone assumes me to be the funny little guy. It's hard to taken serious, especially in the job. At least in Germany it's most likely that Leadership positions occupied by tall people.

2. I have long hair and am mostly a bit bearded. With the beard it's not a fashion thing, it's more that I'm lazy. And I mostly were clothes from the 90s. Sometimes Convers Chucks with Lumberjack shirt like Kurt Cobain or baggy pants with old school big Skate Shoes from Osiris or brands like that. So, a lot ppl think I'm smoking weed. No I don't! I don't even smoke cigarettes (stopped smoking 11 years ago). Maybe it's also that I play some music instruments, but weed never was my thing. I am the person that is totally confused anyway all the time. And I'm always tired. So for me weed is totally not what I could keep. ^^

3. Since I earn my money let me say... in the computer business I always have to fix the computer of someone. No, I don't know windows. Srsly, can't help you with your problems. I'm on Linux since over 15 years. Sorry (and I don't want to fix your Windows!)

4. Since I call in myself in private conversations with ppl a "hacker" some may get the wrong idea and ask me, to hack in someones Facebook account or something like that. No I can't. At least not on the technical side. Maybe when I use social engineering, but I can't crack (crack! not hack! that is important for us hacker) in a database from Facebook. And to sort things out: A Hacker is person that uses stuff a bit different, away from the original idea of using it. It's like playing LEGO without using the Manual. If you do bad stuff and break into another ones PC or stuff like that, then you are a Cracker, not a Hacker. And there are also Phreaker, but... let's stop here.
