To me it sounds somehow like Native American religion. At least I think, these folks had also hawks as symbol.
And all in all it somehow seems like... a circle. The way which is everywhere somehow. Creatures die - new creatures will be born and influence their environment untill they die and again the next generation goes on.
Hm... cannot really say, if there could be another meaning.
But I think you can see it in a positive in a negative way.
Everything happens again and again - good things as well as bad things.

 Strange thing to me: I never noticed, that there are mentioned hawks. Nevertheless I always saw a landscape like maybe the Rocky Mountains in my mind... and a guy on a Harley taking a break aside the road. The glasses of his shades were like mirrors and he looks up to the sky and I could see a flying hawk in those mirrors glasses. (I just imagined, how a video to that song might look - I didn't imagine me there as well, I was just a viewer, hehe XD)

Now that's some unusual lyrics... I don't know of any legends envolving hawks and stuff, but I'm not that familiar with native american myths, and I have to agree with Camicat, it sounds like one...

Too bad cowboys and norse mithology don't match... If this was norse mithology I'd have some information to add...

Are you SURE you didn't imagine yourself on the back of that Harley?

As for the lyrics, I agree it definitely sounds Native American-inspired at least-- I used to know some stuff about Native American religions, but I forgot most of it now.  Hawks can definitely be part of it though.  I don't remember what the hawk symbolizes specifically (and it can vary from tribe to tribe anyway), but they have stories and beliefs associated with the animals in their environment.  So a tribe that lives somewhere with a lot of hawks would surely have something about hawks in their beliefs.

But this particular story with the stones... I don't know either.  It strikes me as something DTR would have made up on their own, since it has a Native American feeling but also seems to incorporate a little Christianity (just the word "Apocalypse" and some of the language in the first verse... "God and His glory", etc.).  If they were going for a 100% Native American thing, I think they may have said "the Great Spirit" rather than "God".

Yeah, I have to agree this song sounds a little inspired in some christian themes... The whole idea of the people wandering through the desert and receiving a "new life" from their god is pretty similar to some passages from the bible...

Haha, if I start talking about norse mithology here I guess I won't stop before that soon... I just love the norse myths...  8)

Yes, it seems to be at least a mix. Well, but since inspiration doesn't really have limits (or it shouldn't have!) - yes, why not mix an own thing? :D You know, the message of D.T.R is "Do your own thing!" anyway, hahaha! XD

Hahaha, I really can't say I'm not... But when it comes to music I'd rather listen to songs about girls, booze and bikes other than songs about how Thor killed Jörmungand, the Midgard serpent, during Ragnarok, and died just after it, leaving Sleipnir for his two sons, Magni and Modi...
